Sure, it's filled with great technical info., but they have NO sense of humor.

Jake Raby hysteria is very rare on those forums because those members have rebuilt and repaired engines fairly economically without resorting to "YOU MUST SHIP IT TO RABY AT ALL COSTS - IT'S THE ONLY ALTERNATIVE OR YOUR CAR WILL NEVER WORK".

With that said, I feel the landscape and the overall tone of this forum has changed for the worse since I joined.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I think the time has come for me personally to move on from here. I will still own and drive my 996, just without all the static.
Over the years I have learned quite a bit being on this forum and a couple others. I've also been fortunate being in the game long enough with other cars to separate out the bs with the legitimate posts on here and not take everything as bible. With that said, I feel the landscape and the overall tone of this forum has changed for the worse since I joined.
I found it to be more therapeutic to actually be off these forums over the holidays. It seems like whenever I came back, there would be more problems, bashing, off-topic type threads, negativity, non-Porsche specific threads on here(more so lately). Although I admit that some of it eventually turns to amusement and entertainment, this is primarily not the reason why I joined this forum in the first place. There are far better forums for entertainment if I only want entertainment with no Porsche related talk.
Unlike some that come on here to seek answers to problems, I came on here like I do with all other forums as an enthusiast just wanting to learn more about modding the car and other tid-bits of info. Knock on wood I never had to rely on these forums to address any serious issues like some. The only technical tidbit I had to reference was the cause of a leak and eventual mis-fire I've had due to leaky spark plug tubes and coils that was somewhat specific to the earlier 996 models.
I feel like this forum doesn't offer me a lot of new knowledge these days in something I don't already know. There have been and will always be a bit of insight from certain members here from time to time but it doesn't really affect me directly at the moment. For example, even if Jake wrote a thread about the 25+ modes of failure, although it's good to know, it doesn't really affect what I do and how I drive my car in my current situation. I think it would only benefit those that are actually going to be rebuilding their motors themselves(mainly the competitors).
It's been great interacting with some of you and I'll still check in from time to time but the "new" crowd these days just doesn't make me want to participate on a daily basis here. Perhaps, if and when my motor blows, I'll be back here huffing and puffing but til then, take it easy and try not to lose sleep over a mechanical thing that can be repaired or replaced. Also remember YOU own the car, drive it like it was meant to, don't have it dictate how/what you do on it's schedule, don't have it dictate where you go with it. In other words, don't have it own YOU.
alpine, it you are going to rage quit, you have to do better than that!
I don't know if you ever go to the Porsche and Pastries or the fuelfed events, but if so, would like to meet you!
Don't let the door hit you in the *** on the way out!
Well as a newbie, I am still learning a lot from this place and have a lot more to learn. Not about cars in general so much but about 911's.
I have been a long time member of the M5Board, and that place seems to be a model for how an enthusiast car forum should be done - at least in the E39 section where I hang out.
I must admit the S/N ratio is much lower over here, but there is some serious content although sometimes buried in the weeds a bit. Far too much doom and gloom here - don't get that much on the E39 M5 forum, and it's not like those cars are devoid of problems and heavy maint. and repair costs.
In a way the latest trend also shows the 996s are quite reliable in general as we run out of problems to fix! Anything that breaks we already have a solution so people or new comers just keep bringing up the dead horses (unintentionally).
What I have been hoping for is more people doing more engine repair/rebuild/renew, etc. and share their findings since the engine is the ONLY major part of the car left which still has mysteries.
there was a recent poll taken that concluded, during rennlist membership, the brain actually shrinks similar to a ***** in water.
by withdrawing or "zipping up" from the forum, the brain slowly grows back to it's original larger size.
at that time, and only until that time, is one able to commit back to the forum where the process starts over again.
Hey, a respite is a good thing.
Take a break from the madness, come in and peek as a lurker now and then, rise to the bait that's presented on an incendiary thread, and you'll be back on the hook.
No one ever leaves forever. The embers that are left behind will eventually be stoked into a full fledged inferno.
I ebb and flow on Rennlist, and have for years (seriously - check my Join Date over there on the left). I recently started posting again after nearly a year of relative quiet. But Alpine is right, this place just ain't what it used to be. Nothing on the Internet is really. In the end, you engage if you want to, if there is value. And these days there is less.
The owner demographics change over time...and the forum with it.
I joined Rennlist over 10 years ago when I had my 993. At that time the 993 was only a few years old and the 996's were still the current model. The 996 owners were different then...the cars were new and under warranty...and the IMS issue was just starting to become more visible. Many of the owners were previous air cooled Porsche owners and had been with the marque for years. Because the cars were new many of the owners were more affluent and had a different perspective on the car.
Now the oldest 996 is 16 years old. Many cars have changed hands multiple times. Some original owners are still around; however, many of the new 996 posters are just now coming into Porsche ownership. Quite a few are "younger" and don't have the same relationship with the Porsche brand that the original owners had. The 996's are still sliding towards the bottom of the depreciation curve and the low cost of entry combined with the age of the cars will be a frustrating experience for many of these owners...a few of whom are probably stretching their purse strings just to buy the car let alone maintain them. That's where we are now.
The air cooled cars went through the same change. Just a couple years ago when you could buy a 2.7 car or SC for under $10K the cars were treated in a different way. Now that these cars are climbing in value the forums are changing as well. Many long term owners are cashing out. Some affluent collectors are coming in. The net result is those forums have changed.
In a nutshell, the 996 forums will change as the ownership demographics change. In a few years, the forums will be quite a bit different from today.
I used to think this, but this eternal bickering about nothing is all over Rennlist. Please check the 997 forum for yet another intelligent 10 page thread debating PDK vs manual ....Geesh, and these are old guys...I've been a member for only a few years and it has degraded from a learning experience for me to somewhere I come for a laugh.which is fine, as I can get educated somewhere else. Some members take things too seriously here and egos are seriously overinflated...I am enjoying the JEEP forums now where a bunch of kids are taking a sawsal to a bumper as the next mod. Sounds like fun. How can we get that spirit back here, minus the sawsal ?
Alp.......you are not the only one that feels that way. I have grundies older than the median age of most new owners. I'm sure most of these guys played mediocre soccer as kids and always got a medal. On some days I want to give Al Gore a swift kick in the nuts for inventing the interwebs and taking away my privacy.....but I digress. Best to you! Someone say *****?
Ok....been out of the country and just read every page of the "Am I Delusional Thread".
Alp...I can only guess that was the thread that sent you over the edge because I am now quite nauseous.
WhiteOut... do you still have your LS 996? If so, how's everything going?
PS- alpine, best of luck. I'm personally relatively new to this forum but have shared in your sentiment. If I hadn't picked up another very challenging 996 project, I'd probably be on the samba full time!
So dramatic! It's just a forum dude, if you live and die by this thing daily perhaps you need to take a break. Meanwhile, all of us "new" guys will continue to ruin it for you while you're away.
As a relatively new 996 owner this forum has given me lots of information and pointers in the right direction something I'm very happy about and which have saved me for agony.
This said, we will all "graduate" at one point and I guess your time has come. Fair points you come with and I wish you the best of luck and thanks for the reads over the last 2 years or so...
Good points Alpine. Yes the forum is constantly changing, many 996 enthusiasts have left and gone to other forums, and there are a lot of new 996 owners coming on board. Sometimes it is the same old subject matter rehashed over and over again. The infighting does get old at times, but I'll stick around for awhile longer at least until Sneakey Pete gets his new ride. It makes sense to back away and take a break, can't say I disagree with your post.
Don't some threads simply scream out "DON'T BOTHER READING ME!!!"?
I think the absolute first rule of these internet forums is to learn that you can't get back time spent reading a bunch of BS.
The second rule is to learn that there is basically no BS filter in the internet.
Never understood how something online could bother someone in real life.
Yeah there's been a lot of crap on this board for a couple of years now so with most of it I ignore and now just don't post as often as I used to. But for it to bother me is a stretch. I can easily pick and choose which threads to read and if it doesn't interest me I move on.
There have also been times when RL bores me and I just won't log in for a week. But I still like to see what's going on and who is complaining about what.
Good luck with your decision!
Thank you all for your good, bad, interesting, colorful comments in the good ole Rennlist fashion. That's one thing that never disappoints here. I've had thick skin before I came on here and now have slightly thicker skin going, not because of the comments but due to having seen all those horrific pics posted by Jake.
Those pics would make any normal man limp in a second from a boner from their favorite model/girl.
Just to clarify, I'm not really bothered so much as I don't really see the value of being here(for me) as it's lost a lot of it since previous years, due to more talk about nothing vs. talking about actual Porsche 966 specific facts/experiences/discoveries/etc. Almost everything you can learn has already been talked about since like 10 years ago or so. Rarely do you see any new material these days.
With that said, this forum can still be a good place for new guys to get together and learn however I would highly suggest to first search the older posts from mid 2000's or so if you want more of a straight answer without all the clutter you see now adays.
As for a poll, I'm not in politics and don't need it.
P.S. I may chime in IF/WHEN KK gets his Turbo and starts a thread on whether he should drive it 300 miles to a place or not, or if he thinks he'll lose coolant in the process and overheat his engine.
So I have to say I see Alpine003's point of view.
I've now resorted to this with respect to Pcar forums:
1. If I want serious technical help - It's Renntech and Pelican. Both have very helpful, highly experienced, technical members (heck the tech at Herb Chambers Porsche goes on Renntech to contribute).
2. Cosmetic stuff, banter / entertainment : Rennlist
Having said that, the traffic on Renntech is a fraction of Rennlist, because people gawk and ogle at some of the ridiculous SH*T that gets posted here - grown men arguing with one another or with kids for that matter to 'show who's boss'.
The loutish behavior of some Posters on Rennlist could be deleted by the Moderator.Note I said 'could'.
The verbal graffiti on otherwise useful technical threads ruins them . I just 'unsubscribe'.
I'm not advocating censorship just make a separate section for them(like Parts Marketplace) to wallow in rudeness, irrelevance, scatology and distraction.
There is a good example of how decent and helpful a Forum can be -I participate in a Cummins diesel truck forum -1stGen.org. It can be done.
Yes there is silliness here. Keeps the place entertaining. I'm on 914World a lot. Sure, it's filled with great technical info., but they have NO sense of humor.
On RL, whenever I have posted a serious question regarding some technical issue with my car, I have
always
received prompt and helpful replies.
Cuda911 you are spot on.
we all play games on RL however when it comes to serious questions regarding repair/purchase information, rennlist forum can't be beat. great knowledgable owners and more gracious help than one can imagine.
people go way out of their way to help and that can't be denied.
HOWEVER, i'll be the 1st ass_ole to comment on a delusional post - it's usually a "user" or newbie who is selling their car at a ridiculous price or bringing up the IMS issues OR some douchbag who makes out of line/uncalled for rude comments.
it's unfortunate they come here to get schooled but thats what life is all about and makes life so entertaining.
anyone that finds this forum offensive at times wouldn't have a chance on the OT forum. and anyone that would unsubscribe or leave publicly has to be a *****. at least get thrown off by the moderators. me and amber lamps can explain how to do that
of course you have to be a paid member for the OT club
cool:
What I see as a new guy is a lot of the same guys complaining about Jake Raby and his posts yet I thought he gave out the most useful information that I read on here. I also never read anything that he posted saying or implying that the only way to fix the car was to ship it to him. I saw other posts about different technical stuff that was interesting and helpful but I also saw and still see a bunch of posts that are just a waste of time to read. Who really gives a **** if or not if someone is ashamed about their car and who really cares what price someone thinks their car is worth unless they're interested in buying it. Sometimes its entertaining but its much better if its useful. I can see where a person who has been on it for a long time would see less and less value out of being here but new guys should be able to learn about the faults and fixes for a while.
Sweet. Meh. Sweet.
Any chance you know how that LS 996 is doing nowadays? Wondering about the longevity of the swap... IIRC, you had about 3K on the LS setup when you posted for sale.
How is the IHI thread doing nowadays? Worth the price of admission?
The IHI thread is always worth the price of admission!
I tend to visit multiple Porsche sites as well as a few Audi sites. They are all different and they all have their own upsides and downsides. I do visit renntech.org frequently, and it is a great technical resource. That being said, it doesn't offer much in the way of participation or entertainment. I also visit 6speedonline.com. This site offers quite a bit in terms of entertainment (as much or more than rennlist) but not too much in terms of technical help. There are lots of threads on 6speedonline about wanting to put 20" wheels on a 911 or trying to get to 750 HP. I visit reutterwerk.com also, and it's essentially the "old" OT from rennlist. It offers virtually nothing in terms of Porsche technical assistance, but it's great if you need assistance with something else. Finaly, I visit rennlist.com. IMHO, rennlist offers a little bit of everything. It's my favorite overall Porsche site when you consider the good and the bad parts of it. There are great forum members who regularly contribute to rennlist, and there are trolls and knuckleheads. You just have to sort through it and take the good parts out.
Enjoy the break, Alpine! Sometimes you have to vacate the boards and clear your head. If you start taking yourself or anyone else on a message board seriously, it's time to punch out for a bit.
Cheer up! Soon, it will be "Construction Season" in Chicago!
TC
If people replying to stupid threads is the most horrifying thing you've ever seen, you don't get out much...and using the Internet may not be a good life choice.
Out of a grand total of two posts, at least one of them includes you writing about rebuilding engines...
Alpy, go if you must, but I for one would also miss your comments and contributions here. The 996 forum is the most popular because of all the great tech, humor, and sometimes goofy posts.
If it will help you decide what to do, I thought you should know that before any of my posts show up they go through an extensive approval process by all mods, and several committees. Usually it takes several days just to get a simple "welcome" post approved.
Steve.....it is getting close. 1 1/2 months away....scheduled to get it in March somewhere between the 1st and 30th! During the wait my buddy down the road DWS964, gave me some garage art, a vinyl photo (60x36) of this. He was in front of my by 2 or 3 feet going well over 100 MPH while at a DE a few years ago. It is on the wall of the bay where my car slept. I'm heading out there now with a cigar, newspaper and some Woodford. That pic will get me thru the wait
