Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm planning to replace the control arm links this weekend. Most of the DIY discussions seem very straight forward EXCEPT no one has mentioned the nut at the top of the bushing and how to access it or if it needs to be held in place. The rear bushing end of the control arm link appears to have a 17mm nut on top, but there is inadequate room to access it. Is the nut captured in place or does it need to be held with a wrench? On the front bushing end of the link there is no visible nut at the top of the bolt. Dees this need to be accessed from the frunk area or does the bolt thread into a captured fitting? Thanks. Pics of the front and rear, respectively:

POST 2Original post

it is a captive nut. you do not need to hold it with a wrench.

POST 3Original post

Wait a minute for some reason I recall having to acquire a bicycle cone wrench, can't quite recall the size of it but I can take a look in my tool box this evening and report back. I remember having to use a thin box wrench to squeeze in the rear area to hold that top nut to loosen the bolt to replace the control arm (for the rear).

POST 4Original post

Device2, you're correct. Front is a captured nut, but rear is not. You need an ultra thin wrench to hold it.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Project was completed relatively easily. Yes, the rear nut is not captive. its a 21mm. I had a thin box-end wrench left over from an old motorcycle tool kit that I was able to slip over the top. One good tip is to loosen the 4 subframe nuts. This will allow the subframe to drop just a couple millimeters, but enough to get better access to that 21mm nut. There are a couple of good videos on YouTube to show the repair.
