Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

If drip is minor, leave it alone until you have to replace the IMSB in two more years.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Just got a 2001 996 C4 Tip, and it has a small leak from the RMS. It has 75k miles, and had an IMSB replacement about three years ago.
Was going to get the RMS fixed at my local shop, but is there anything else I should have them do at the same time? Any other seals/etc. in the same area worth replacing?
Thanks!
Since you have a Tip the entire engine/transmission will be dropped. Along with the RMS, I would consider doing the IMS bearing again (with the Solution), AOS, water pump and thermostat...maybe all the coils and plugs as well. Also might consider replacing the coolant expansion tank since it will be accessible and easy.
Wow, a small leak leads to IMS solution, water pump, thermostat, coils, AOS and case through bolt.
$2000 for the Solution
$200 for water pump
$100 for T stat
$500 for coils and plugs
$200 for AOS
$20 for case through bolt
and $2000 for labor for a total bill of $5000.
How about just leaving it alone until it leaks a puddle as opposed to a drop? Oil is $5 a quart. How long does it take to leak 1000 quarts ?
If the OP is having the RMS done, they are already paying for the majority of the labor, and these other jobs are essentially "while you are in there" jobs. Water pump and thermostat are a little less so, but they sure are easier to get to with the engine out of the car.
That is what I thought. If it leaks a drop (minor) a day, put a rag under it and drive on until the next big thing.
Dropping the engine, split the transmission from the engine, remove the flywheel, get the RMS, and put everything back is at least a $2K job for a cheap indi. That seems excessive for a drop of oil.
This is also the issue with the "while you are in there" thought process, which I also have. It is just difficult to know when to decide that you have spent enough.
For instance, you are replacing a RMS, should you do a new IMS bearing while you are in there. Does it really make sense to do a new expansion tank. How about a new starter? New hoses on an old car? There becomes a point where you are doing a full engine rebuild on a "while you are in there" sort of deal. I would do the stuff that absolutely needs to be done, if you are really wanting to do the RMS. Personally though I would let the drop or two of oil be there until you have the real reason to go in and do a refresh of components.
If you are a DIY and your time is free, OK. The RMS fix is $40 plus some oil and coolant. If you are saying you would pay someone $2500 to fix a drop of oil leak from the RMS, well there is an asylum with your name on the roster.
If the RMS is leaking, there is the chance that its oiling the clutch as well.. Which in my experience,, means the problem usually doesn't get better..
YMMV for sure.. !
First of all, I do all of my own work.
Lots of stuff I wouldn't pay to have done because it is too costly, lots of folks here would gladly pay for. For many people $2500 wouldn't be any hardship.
My personal experience is that ignoring small problems often leads to bigger problems. At this stage of my life, I'd rather do $2500 of preventative maintenance than spend $15000 on a replacement engine.
If that means I need to be in an asylum, then I think I'll have lots of company.
Thanks for all the feedback everyone! The shop told me today that the RMS is okay, so I guess I'll leave it alone for a while: Although that IMS-change is coming-up in the next year or two.
