Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have an 03 Carrera with 66K miles. When at interstate speeds and making a long sweeping left hand turn, there is an echo like reverberating sound coming out of the driver rear wheel area. It gets louder the faster and sharper the turn. The 'reverberating' part is a muffled wheel spin of sorts...like it could be the bearing. It does not make the same sound on right hand turns.
Now, of course, you know how sounds are - you think you know exactly where it is and it turns out not to be that at all. That is what worries me. Anyone experience this sound from their 996?
I had similar noises and it was the left front wheel bearing. Considering all of the track time my 1999 sees and has seen, I am surprised it lasted this long.
Get it on a lift, or jack stands under front jack points. Grab wheel and rock back and forth, and spin. Looseness in rocking or grinding swooshing sound while turning indicate bad wheel bearing.

Ok, thanks for the advice. How difficult is a DIY 996 wheel bearing replacement for the front and rear? I can do most wearable maintenance parts but definitely not at an engine rebuild level(?)
Search on renntech for the DIY instructions. Some special tools needed IIRC. You have to judge tackling the job yourself. The bearing is cheap.
