Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I hear this mostly when changing from 1st to second then 2nd to third..........as the engine revs drop, I hear a kind of "rattle".

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I hear this mostly when changing from 1st to second then 2nd to third..........as the engine revs drop, I hear a kind of "rattle". Sounds to me like some exhaust baffles are rattling around. I know that without a sound clip it's difficult to say but does anyone have any experience of this on their car?

POST 2Original post

Yes. My money says you either have loose heat shielding around your exhaust, or one or both catalytic converters are starting to chunk. Some time with the car backed onto ramps and a rubber mallet should help you isolate the source of the issue.

Good idea! Thanks for the tip.

POST 4Original post

Easy with the mallet. The converter portion of the exhaust system are ceramic and if one is not loose you can knock it loose with too severe banging on the exhaust system with a mallet, even a rubber one. I've used my fist to pound on the exhaust system rather than a mallet. Check the shields, too.

POST 5Original post

Check the front engine mount while you're there, if it's compromised the extra shake will sometimes introduce new rattles.
