Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion
With only the left illuminated, you'll have a contrasting lamp that will change intensity when you hit the brakes.
Leading evidence: 'Replace intensity' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace intensity' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey all,
I noticed that my right (passenger side) rear fog light wasn't coming on. Figured just a dead bulb. So when I pulled out the light assembly, I was surprised to see that there was no bulb present at all.
I put in a bulb, but no go. The bulb receptacle contacts seem fine. The light in the left side of the car works fine. Is there a separate fuse for the right side? Or do I have a short somewhere?
Thanks for any input!
.
OK, I thought you guys were messin' with me. I did some Google searches, and sho nuff!!! Only left side is supposed to work. Sheesh.
Now I'm out $5.38 for a pair of bulbs I don't need. That could have bought me a nice mocha latte.
Two questions:
1. Why the hell do they put a wired receptacle on the right side? Do they enable the right side for Brits, Aussies, etc.?
2. Is there any way that I can bypass whatever disabling was placed by Porsche for the receptacle, so I can make the right side light up?
This needs to be added to the "little known facts about 996" thread.

If you drive around with 2 brightly illuminated rear fog lamps, people will believe you are driving with your brakes on and not see a change in illumination when you apply your brakes. With only the left illuminated, you'll have a contrasting lamp that will change intensity when you hit the brakes. Only 1 lamp is illuminated for good reason.
If I recall correctly from when I took my UK driving license training, the reason that only one side lights when the fogs are on is to indicate to following motorists where the driver's side of that car is. The driver's side is nearest oncoming traffic. Ahsai's reasoning may be equally as valid.
As for why the car's wired to accept bulbs in both left and right side--manufacturing ease. It means Porsche only had to order one style of taillight assembly. It also makes adapting a LHD car for RHD countries (and vice-versa) much easier--this happens frequently in Europe.
LOL - I actually took my car back to the dealer and complained that as a CPO car I was pissed that they'd deliver the car with a burnt out rear fog lamp. Left pretty red faced after they explained that it was by design. I then got a few opportunities to explain it to folks from work who would call me on my cell phone while following me just to let me know that my passenger side brake light was out.
Thanks for the input, guys. Yeah, I've had people tell me that a brake light is burnt out too.
A very odd little bit of 996 trivia, I think. Do 997's have this "feature" also?
