Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

The proper way is to release the tension on the cable end all the way first then adjust the wheel end first, then finish with adjusting the cable end under the arm rest.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

save me some time searching around and perhaps wrenching unproductively. I need to tighten up the hand brake on 2000 996. where is the adjustment made.

POST 2Original post

There are two places you can adjust the handbrakes. One on the wheel through a hole on the rotor (wheel taken off). The other place is under the arm rest storage. Lift the rubber pad and remove the plastic cover then you will see the handbrake cable ends. Depending on if you still have some room to adjust, you may be able to get away with just tightening the cable end under the arm rest storage. If there's no room for further adjustments, you will need to adjust the wheels. The proper way is to release the tension on the cable end all the way first then adjust the wheel end first, then finish with adjusting the cable end under the arm rest. POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thank you! Saved me a LOT of time and aggravation. I would NEVER have guessed there was a trap door at the bottom of the center console storage. When you go in, take two 13mm wrenches, one open end one box end. The original install leaves plenty of adjustment available. Move front seat forward and do all the work sitting in the back seat. Way cool tip, Thanks again!
