I'm sure the IMSB issue is similar to that and people only see the bad results from when they do go south.

Now, most people that I've talked to with you problem, have replaced the entire gauge assembly, but I believe there are some that have found places that can replace just the LED portion of the assembly.
Leading evidence: 'similar' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'similar' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace entire gauge assembly' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

If anyone has a set for sale that will fit I'd be willing to consider them.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Sold my 04 C4S last month after owning since new and thought I was done with 911's. Well I just bought my 4th today, a 2001 cab with 11k miles. White with metropolitan blue interior and top. Always have had cabs or targa since I'm 6.5" and coupes dont work, plus I live in S Fl.
Car is mint, Interior and exterior are flawless and engine is showroom new condition. Not as fast as the 4S or the turbo but I'll drive it once a week and be happy. Just need to re acclimate myself in driving hard without the all wheel drive.
Only thing thing that needs immediate attention is getting dead pixels fixed in the middle dash where speed, etc shows up . Any ideas on how or where?
May put some new rims on it to give it a little pizzazz, pretty plain Jane the way it is. Not great pics, dreary day and inside garage. Thnx
I think the white ones are pretty rare. I remember seeing Jake Raby say in one of his videos that a white 996 was on his list of potential cars to buy.
Beautiful car! Absolutely beautiful!

Curiously, you say this car is mint, but what is the condition of the engine? Did you get a pre-purchase inspection?
Camshaft deviation? Rough running index? Sump plate/filter oil evaluation? Any debris? Bore Scope the cylinders?
Again, beautiful car... and congratulations. I'm sure you'll have lots of fun in it!
Thanks for the comments, all is good, car runs straight and strong for a 20 yr old 11k mile car, ran it up to 105 on the way home and it was perfect. Orbit Racing here in WPB already went through the car. Engine and Interior(outside of a few seat bolster creases are) as new. Nicest surprise was the aftermarket stereo with bluetooth and backup camera after 14 yrs without. I paid 20k for it and figure I'll drive it for a few yrs and sell it for 20. 😀
Older 996's with low mileage scare the IMSB out of me. With that low of mileage I'd consider getting the engine checked out and put in the IMS Solution.
and there it is.. the worn out imsb concern. Sold my original owner 04 c4s with 52k miles, original imsb and clutch that probably had another 50k miles left on it. As mentioned this is my 4th 911, second 996. Not sure what getting the engine checked out means. I think the car has a dual row and if I'm right I'm comfortable with that. My buddy drove it weekly for the last 2 yrs and I'm not in the scared camp. Maybe I'll do it before I sell it in a couple of yrs or if I keep it maybe I'll do it in 5 yrs, 50k miles or when the clutch needs to be addressed, whichever comes first. I do appreciate your concern. Thanks
Why spend 8K+ on the IMS Solution when the person who developed it says that bore scoring is now the number one problem?
For the record I think that both are real problems but perhaps a little overhyped.
I was between white with blue metropol and black with nephrite green, went for the second. However, white 996s look fantastic and very rare (at this corner of the world) and blue metropol is an all time classic. Look forward to see some pics of this rare interior as well
GD, you don't give up do you? Do u spam every thread with the same alarmist crap? let it die already. Is it possible to have a simple new purchase thread without your nonstop ims posting?
nephrite green? I'd love to see how that looks on the black.
On a separate note I saw a special order hunter green 2019 speedster yesterday in a shop where my buddy was picking up a new to him 09 S that looked faaaabulous.
Difference between all hype and overhyped.
Its definitely a real problem.
My statement is about the cost of the solution.
Ive spoken to the only certified installer near me and Im not willing to spend the money.
There are way too many requirements that jack up the price of a really great solution to the IMSB problem.
Sorry for the bad pun.
But Ill definitely get the retrofit and RMS done when I have the clutch replaced.
If bore scoring doesnt get me first.
Great car and color. There are many on this forum that love adding to the hyperbole of the weak points of the 996 and chastising those who don't feel the same way. Just ignore it and enjoy your cab. Rare to see one with such low mileage.
$8K+?
If that is JUST for the IMS Solution, find another installer!
Or better yet, do it yourself for under $1400.

Of course there are lots of "while you're in there" items, but if you can't afford them, don't!
the white is starting to grow on me after coming out of a lapis blue with the last one, would love to own a coupe again but being 6'5" it's tough. Had a grey market turbo coupe back in the day and still living with the neck issues since! rims look good on yours, i've got the turbo's that the previous c4s had and i'm getting tired of the look after 16 yrs. If anyone has a set for sale that will fit I'd be willing to consider them. thanks
Great color. White doesn't seem to be very common but it looks great on these cars, imo. Very solid price for that many miles. Manual or Tip?..didn't see if you mentioned.
Seems like a lot of the low mileage cars that have sat for a while seem to have the most issues. Perhaps because the car sat and didn't put on miles the oil wasn't changed regularly or yearly, or didn't get warm enough o burn off all the water vapor. With 11K miles and driven weekly your friend sure didn't drive too far or too long. I don't believe in all the doom and gloom but the IMSB is a real issue noted by the lawsuit and all the crunched engines you see in posts both in the forums and articles elsewhere. My 96K car still has the original IMSB as I'm just waiting for the next clutch job to address the issue. My wife is an RN...she sees all the bad results from the things people do. Yet, there are people who do those same things everyday and don't end up in the hospital. I'm sure the IMSB issue is similar to that and people only see the bad results from when they do go south.
White with blue on a targa with a black band was always my favorite color combo, after looking at this color in the garage for 2 days its really growing on me. Car is a manual, after 30+ years of owning 911's I'm not sure I could own a tip.
price paid was not typical, I went with a friend to look at another Porsche and when he decided to buy it the broker offered him 20k for this one, I offered to help him sell it on bat and all the other internet options and he just wanted out of the old and into the new ride and said if I wanted it for what the broker was offering I could have it . How could I say no?😀👿

Damn, that's some green you got going on there! Looks good, though I think it would take me a little while driving it to fully appreciate it. Like all good things, gets better with time.
