I have a set of ceramic coated Fisters used less than one year on a 99 C2.

I need to take the car in for an oil change before it's put away for the winter as well as have the passenger side window regulator replaced (stopped dropping the 1/4 inch a few weeks ago) so hopefully the dealer will have a

Normally, I'd just replace with stock parts as that's my style but I nearly had a coronary when I realized that the units appear to be around $1,500 USD each (I think both sides are gone).

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello All,
I believe new mufflers for my non-PSE '99 C2 are soon needed. When taking off from a stop, if you aren't 100% smooth and the rpms drop a bit, you'll get some rattling. Slightly better when warmed up, but not much. Similar thing occurs when you 'lug' the engine' a bit (I know...) so I'm assuming some of the baffles may be loose and responding to certain resonances or something. No rattles at idle speed or when driving and cruising normally. It's been doing it to some extent or another for a couple of years now and I know it's not as it left the factory as it's been in the family since '02 - car was originally my Dad's.
Normally, I'd just replace with stock parts as that's my style but I nearly had a coronary when I realized that the units appear to be around $1,500 USD each (I think both sides are gone).
Does anyone have a lead on either of the following?
1) Quality aftermarket mufflers that are quiet? I don't mind a small amount more noise at idle but the car is really a cruiser. I think the 'Fister D' level of noise would be the maximum acceptable.
2) Repair/rebuild shop preferably in the greater Toronto area (or Ontario?)
Thanks very much!
Jeff

i have fabspeed maxflos on my car and they sound pretty good, not that loud. They may be out of your budget though.

that Fister set in on EBay guy has had set for sale for 6 months or better. Far from you but.......
I have the quietest Dansk Sport mufflers (the ones with TUV approval) and they are really nice: no drone on the highway, not obnoxious in the city, but still a great mean sound when you rev past 4k.
Wow have prices gone up! When I bought a set to use for the Fister mod about ten years ago I paid $100 for the lightly used pair. There were lots of options in that price range. I should have invested in mufflers instead of my 401k.
A shop should be able to cut them open and weld the baffles in place.
I have a set of ceramic coated Fisters used less than one year on a 99 C2. Pretty much as new.
The Fister modification to the factory muffler is perfection in terms of sport exhaust sound with a stock appearance and design.

If you are leaning more towards repairing your setup, give Pfaff Tuning a call. They are an Authorized Fabspeed Dealer and are an excellent shop for repairs or upgrades!
If I may chime in, I had a similar problem. It is likely not a muffler, but rather the Cat. I had one Cat that rattled and I just replaced it to solve the problem. Apparently, this is not an uncommon problem. A mechanic with a stethescope can verify it in a couple of minutes. One Cat is a lot cheaper than a complete system.
I think that, as in California, you have to be very careful with exhaust systems, because your smog requirements, in Ontario, are very similar, and may have even been modeled after California. I might hazzard a guess that selecting a product that is legal in California (ie 50 state legal), will likely be legal for you in Ontario. Good luck with your repairs.
I have GHL mufflers on my 2000 C2. The stock mufflers were super quiet. The GHL’s have no resonance or drone at any speed. I have no idea if they are still in biz. Tho.
All the more reason to be sure ina diagnosis but what the OP describes is really common in 996 mufflers- in fact mine are doing it and Im sure its my mufflers...
Thank you all for the great information in particular 'mlemche' as it had never occurred to me that the cats could be causing the problem. As noted by at least one other poster, emissions checks in Ontario ended a few years ago and although the car always passed with flying colours, it doesn't mean to say that something isn't still loose in there. I just came back from an errand and I tried to reproduce the noise by slowly letting out the clutch while holding the brakes to bring the rpms down but no luck. I guess the loads and resonances aren't right - that or it's something else loose back there.
I need to take the car in for an oil change before it's put away for the winter as well as have the passenger side window regulator replaced (stopped dropping the 1/4 inch a few weeks ago) so hopefully the dealer will have a

Apologies to the people who said to message them (or they tried to message me). I tried to figure it out last night and today and have
no

Hey Jeff,
I live in Richmond Hill and have a 2001 C2 that I put the Top Gear UK mild mufflers on. Happy to drive up to Newmarket - weather permitting - if you want to hear them.
https://www.topgear.co.uk/porsche-91..._type=exhausts
They are GBP 499 on their website - so about CAD 850 and shipping was pretty fast and reasonable cost. I also have their 200 cell x-pipe cat and headers on my car. It is very quiet around the neighborhood but sounds great under wide-open throttle.
Here's my system after unboxing:
