Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

There's no real way of metering/measuring how much is used (just spray it on there...) and most people subscribe to the "more is better" model.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

just bought my 1st 911 996 it has the k& n air filter upgrade system its throwing various codes due to filter. how do I stop codes from coming back. once removed .they come straight back any positive advice that doesn't involve main dealer. im on a tight budget.
I think that filter has messed at least MAF with dirt. Check MAF if it can be cleaned (be carefully), or replace it. You may check throttle body too, if it is dirty. Clean and oil filter with specific K&N - products. Best alternative is go to back orginal filter system.
Your problem - k& n air filter upgrade system. On our cars the K&N air filter is NOT an upgrade, rather a detriment. Go back to a stock air filter box with a paper filter. Clean or replace your MAF sensor. If you do this, I'll place bet all your problems will go away. If the car is throwing a CEL, get the code(s) and write them down. Disconnect the negative battery lead for 15 minutes to reset the ECU/DME.
People, I've had the K&N Cold Air Kit/Filter on my car for the last 20K miles, and it doesn't throw codes. Unless you have seriously over oiled the filter element, thereby fouling the MAF, your K&N filter is most likely not the source of your error codes. This is like an old wives tale that just keeps getting repeated by generations of 911/996 owners, just like alternative facts in our post truth world.
It may not do anything in the terms of performance gains but it does create a bit of extra noise. Not saying it's worth it over a stock air box, but it's also not
completely
pointless.
The PO of my car (which had a K&N) told me that the car kept throwing codes if the filter didn't have the "sock" on it. He put the sock on, codes stopped.
Most of the "problems" caused by the K&N filters are due to the oil on the filter fouling the MAF sensor. There's no real way of metering/measuring how much is used (just spray it on there...) and most people subscribe to the "more is better" model. According to anyone who knows anything about these engines, the stock airbox (or later stock 3.8 airbox) is best - dry filter...
If you want slightly improved performance, go with the 997 airbox. You'll have to modify the snorkel at little, but IMHO, the 997 airbox is a better option than these so called "cold air intakes". Most of the ones I've seen pull hot air around the engine bay, not cold air from factory port on the deck lid.
No, that's not an old wives tale, it doesn't add performance and I would not presume to say it does, but it sure looks and sounds cool! But that was not the focus of the original post, was it? The original post was about error codes and its more likely than not that the K&N filter is not the source of the codes, just an easy scapegoat for the non-cognoscenti.
It has been a long time since Porsche air filters were a restriction. Even the 928 had a large enough filter that changing them to a K&N did no performance improvements. The 996 is in the same boat, the stock filter surface area is large enough that it's choking the engine.
