It has a spring loaded pop off valve that pops if the crankcase pressure gets above a certain level, sometimes they don't seat back, but I would test the blow-by as per this thread to see what the actual blow-by is..

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

2 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi All, Time for everyone's favorite game - what is this part. It is on the head, on the passenger side of the vehicle close to the rear bumper. Ob my car, it appears to be leaking oli. I'm referring to the black thing on the top that looks like a vent. Looks easy enough to get at (after removing the coolant hose). Note: picture is not my motor.

POST 2Original post

That is a "blow-off valve" or "over pressure valve" for the crankcase. It has a spring loaded pop off valve that pops if the crankcase pressure gets above a certain level, sometimes they don't seat back, but I would test the blow-by as per this thread to see what the actual blow-by is.. https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...w-by-test.html And you can plug it off to stop the leak as a "hack", the 996.2 doesn't have this on it for a reason..

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
