About 5 years later I decided Id had enough and changed the DMF (I changed the clutch again and bled it since it was already all opened up).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

For about the first 15-20 minutes of every cold start I'm getting clutch chatter. However after about 15 miles it goes away and it's smooth like is should be. The RMS was replaced about 6 months ago and clutch was said to be in excellent condition. It's the original clutch with about 20k miles. 2002 targa by the way. Could there be an oil leak getting in to the disc / pressure plate area then going away after 15 miles? Any ideas?

POST 2Original post

If symptom from an oil leak an inspection from under the car with the car up in the air would I think spot leak sign. To get oil on the flywheel and clutch requires a pretty healthy leak. Even with all the RMS leaks with the RMS of course right behind the flywheel having the leak foul the flywheel/clutch is very very rare. When was the brake and clutch hydraulic system last flushed and bled? Unless done recently -- and even if done recently if there is any reason to doubt the job's correctness -- this would be my advice, to have the brake and clutch hydraulic system fluid flushed and bled. Then see if the symptoms remain. Sincerely, Macster.

POST 3Original post

one "trick" I have done before is to slip the clutch a couple of times on purpose If you are good with the clutch its not being used much, not reving the motor and not slipping very long with each start. IMO it collects crap on it...(plus the teck might have left grease on the flywheel or PP or disc) so what I do is driving along about mid speed I partially depress it and rev the motor to create some heat on it (slip it) a few times... get it warm really "burn it up" a couple times (3-5) it wont ruin the disc and it wont wear it very much if any... but it will produce a nice clean area and if the teck got his greasy fingers all over the disc or flywheel it should create enough heat to burn that off....

When I bought it in November as a CPO, the paperwork says it had just had the 15k service including a brake flush. Does that includes the clutch being bled? I also flushed the brakes this spring for a DE. So to be sure, I should bleed the clutch.

POST 5Original post

I have a 996 that the clutch chatters in first gear. Just had the clutch changed before I purchased with an EPS clutch. What could be causing this chatter?

POST 6Original post

Was the dual mass flywheel changed?

POST 7Original post

I do not believe that it was. There is no record of one purchased in my documentation. Would you believe it to be safe to open it up and only replace the fly wheel to fix the issue? Should I replace the disk to an OEM also?

POST 8Original post

OP - A good 996 clutch with DMF should never chatter. Probably needs a deeper look.

POST 9Original post

Mine chattered even after a clutch change. About 5 years later I decided Id had enough and changed the DMF (I changed the clutch again and bled it since it was already all opened up). The chatter went away...draw your own conclusions as to whether it was the DMF, the clutch or the hydraulics.
