Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Dilemma time. I've got a decent offer ($31,500) on my C4S Cab Blk/Blk/Tip 84k well cared for miles.
Id really like a '09 997.2 but the cost factor is a 25% premium minimally just to even get an S let alone a 4S or cab.
I found a really good deal on a well sorted '08 997.1 C4S lightly optioned 6 sp. I dont have the money to grab the 997.2 and wondering if I should just ride out the next few years until the 997.2s drop hoping they'll come down much faster now than my 996 Cab has plateaued somewhat and the 996 being a drop top really helps deflect as rapid a depreciation on 996 with an appeal to a bigger audience.
I know the DI, upgraded horsepower, BT, better nav, facia redsign, PDK, and LED differences in the .1 and the .2 so what I'm really looking for arguments both ways. Ive also been through and IMF failure thankfully under full warranty so Ive got a late build 996 engine with really only 67k mile on it.
Whatever car I go with its not my primary daily driver anymore
YOLO. If this car REALLY sings to you, buy the '08 997.1 C4S. From personal experience, buying a Porsche WAS NOT a rational decision (I do NOT need this car, already have 3 bikes as toys, have a reliable daily driver and actually carpool most of the time)
I would suggest that you drive a .1 and .2 and see what really appeals to you. Each has its own character, much like the 996.1 and .2 have a different feel. There aren't better or worse 911s, just different ones. Case in point, I've seen several people in the 997 forum that have "downgraded" from a 991 to a 997 because they didn't like the refinement of the 991.
That's a solid offer and if you have the bug moving to a 2008 C4S is a nice move up. There is really no right or wrong just go with your heart and your gut. How much money would be out of pocket for the move?
I agree with the comment that you should drive both variants and buy the one that appeals to you. The 997.1 will feel very familiar, yet it will feel very different from your 996 on many ways.
Driving everything back to back, including your current 996, is the only way to see and feel what your money will get you...if anything. I know that some people compare the 996 to the 964 and the 997 to the 993. But I would consider it all a wash and only trust the seat of your own pants. Just don't get sucked into statistics that have no bearing on your real world experiences. Top speeds, zero to 60, hot laps at the Ring...throw it all away and only consider which car you like driving. But also look at recent posts in the 997 forum about people becoming disenchanted with PDK and yearning to get back to a manual transmission. You have a factory replaced engine and a car that is just starting its life. If what you are experiencing is a sort of "marital boredom" consider renting a Lambo for a week...and then go back and see how you feel about the 996.
What's the price differential to the 997.1 C4S?
Significant HP bump (315 -> 355, remember the S and 4S on 997's went to 3.8's), six speed, much more modern interior, round headlights.
Yup, still has an IMS shaft and ball bearing, though the failure rates on the later 9*7.1's seem really low.
All good advice so far.
Here is another perspective. I tend to skip generations on things that I buy. For example, I am going from an iPhone 4S to an iPhone 6.
The 997.1 is a step up from the 996.2, but the 997.2 is yet another step up, if less so.
If you have to wait awhile to move to the 997.2, the good thing is that depreciation is on your side here.
997s (.1 or.2) should depreciate at a faster rate than your 996.2 (especially your C4S).
Hard to go wrong either way though, and if you have found a desirable 997.1, it might be hard to pass it up. 'Sounds like you also have a good offer on your 996 and that is usually 1/2 the battle or more when it is time to upgrade.
This great and exactly the help I need. Love the guys and gals on the forum and a big thank you. Let provide some answers....
I'll do the back to back. Six speed is cool with me I use to have a 01 996 C4 6spd. Burn a clutch out innAtkanta traffic but my right thigh was gigantic.
I'm making this a non emotional as I can since I've iwned a few and ring numbers and the like don't fi much for me. The DI and some more advsnced engine do weight in though.i can't afford a 987 Turbo right now. The 997.1 C4S I'm looking at is only 43,600 k. Very lightly optioned however.at only about 7k in options. Adaptiveseats Bose, are the larger ones.
Here the other questions. Current car trie black 997 C4S in Macadamia. I've had two black ones and fir some reason that brown clean in the sun is sharp looking. Very different message and vibe but that might be fun to have one a bit more rich looking and understated.
Well they've killed off the "Good week" thread with all the serious Raby talk. I'd say thats as good a sign as any that its time to move on. As such I pushed my wife's into a river this morning.
If you want to leave IMS issues, bore scoring, water pump and more, once and for all, you should wait for a 2010 997.2 or any 996 or 997 Turbo

another curveball is that the 997.2 is not a 100% guarantee, by any stretch, in terms of reliability. much like the M96, the 9A1 (or whatever it's called) is the first gen DFI engine. every other manufacturer has had significant if not serious issues adopting this. there are trivial things like high pressure fuel injectors failing, but the more insidious things, especially for a lightly driven Porsche is carbon buildup and effectively dealing with this.
the 2008 997.1 is by all accounts pretty well sorted out and I do not think the 997.2s have reached a stable depreciation point just yet.
just my 0.02.
I'd go low mile well optioned 996 turbo for now and let the 997s depreciate. 996 TT not likely to depreciate more and it gets you into something different, so money in the bank. Then get a 997.2 in a couple years.
If someone offered thirty one grand for your 996 its obviously a real nice one. I say just keep it. Easy for me to say because I just recently got mine and don't want anything else.
Im loving the Macadamia Brown Metallic. It's a unique color and it looks nice on a Porsche. Another thing to note: you can easily add bluetooth phone and bluetooth streaming audio to the PCM 2.1 unit in a 997.1. I did this in my 2008 with a Mobridge system and it works very well.
With a strong offer on your current Porsche, and with an itch to change Porsches, I'd sell the 996 and 'then' decide wit 997 would suit your driving needs best. GLWS
That's a great offer so if you're even considering it I would also sell and make a decision on what you want next with the cash in hand.
I bought mine for less than that almost 6 years ago!
$31,500 for an 84k car is a PHENOMENAL OFFER. Even if you don't buy the new car right away take the money and run before this guy changes his mind! Then you will have cash on hand and no strings attached when it comes to decide between the 997's.
I went from the 996.2 to a 997.2.
IMHO, the 997.2 is the best 911 you can buy. I don't like the looks or feel of the 991 and there is so much more to like about the 997 over the 996. If you've got the $$$ then make the move.
I saw a white 2011 997 GTS in RL classifieds for 69K. Its PDK though... good deal for someone. If were to upgrade for i'd be hunting a GTS coupe or 997.1 GT3. I've driven 997s and they are quick no doubt but not quite as raw as the 996. Generous offer on your car though. Id probably take the $ and enjoy the hunt for a few months. good luck
