I have the 996 up on jackstands while I redo the suspension over the winter and I've disconnected the battery to keep it from draining.

Just make sure there aren't any fault codes stored before you disconnect (If you'd had any running problems you'll probably want to do an OBD scan anyway).

I have the 996 up on jackstands while I redo the suspension over the winter and I've disconnected the battery to keep it from draining. The doors will be open, and so will the front and rear lids....you get the idea Just thinking last night that leaving a modern car with no juice whatsoever for an extended period of time may have some consequences I am not aware of. I've done this before without any obvious effect but thought I'd check here. Now - at the risk of sounding curmudgeonly - please limit your responses to facts based on experience or specific knowledge. Thanks guys.

I asked a similar question(engine out for rebuild) but added a rider about leaving the key in the ignition or not. I was told it would be O.K. I was too concerned to heed the reassuring advice so compromised by charging the battery slowly every 10 days or so. The proof will be when I try to start the rebuilt engine and hopefully do not find the ECU/security system has decayed in some way.

I was fine with disconnecting the battery months at a time. I'm not sure about the Porsche DME but with other cars, some require you to let it idle for a couple min after you reconnect and start it up as standard protocol. I've gotten accustom to this and also let my 996 idle for a few minutes after I reconnect the battery.

I've removed my battery during storage for the last 10 years (no power where the car is) - have had no problems. I keep it charged on a bench. Just make sure the front lid doesn't close completely, I block the latch opening with a thin piece of wood taped into place.

I know you say the doors will be open, but the whole time? Other than that I know of no problem with an extended period of battery removal.
