Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

When I get above 60mph there is a whining noise that comes from the dash. It sounds like my older Porsche when the speedometer cable went bad, or at least needed some graphite. Does the 996 have a speedometer cable? What else could could make the whining sound? Thanks all, Greg

POST 2Original post

Need more info. Do you have an aftermarket stereo? Bad/loose ground wire can throw the engine noise into your dash apeakers

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I do have an older Alpine head unit but, the whine is more mechanical than some form of white noise. And, even when I turn off the stereo, the whine is still there.

POST 4Original post

i have something similar to this at around 80mph, almost a whistle

POST 5Original post

If traffic holds me back to 60mph I whine about it. AT 80mph I whistle Dixie.

POST 6Original post

Not sure about source of the noise, but something to consider is the heater box "back pressure flap" ,which is moved in the direction "closed" according to the vehicle speed (from 55mph/90kmh. The flap setting is also dependent on the fan voltage.

POST 8Original post

There are a number of threads here and on other forums indicating that the windshield seal/stripping is a cause of instrument cluster / A-pillar noise at speed.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
