Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Up until it's last oil change, it ALWAYS ran with Mobil1 15W50.
Leading evidence: 'Run with mobil1 15w50' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Lubricate properties' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

WD-40, that's just sick....
If you aren't using a lot of oil between changes, any good oil in the proper viscosity would be fine. Use oil with higher ZDDP.

If they are doing a little "science project", they should at least do a little research. WD-40 is a solvent. It has no lubricating properties. What it will do is convert old grease and solidified oil into more of a liquid state, which gives it the appearance of being a lubricant. That engine was doomed as soon as they poured it in.
On a side note, my personal experience is that your 996 will run well on several different viscosities of quality oil. My 996 was run hard as a tire tester for the first 42k miles of its life. It now has 92k miles. Up until it's last oil change, it ALWAYS ran with Mobil1 15W50. This is actually the viscosity for the air cooled cars. I tracked it at Road Atlanta on Wednesday with Driven XP9 10W40. The first time it has not run 15W50. I live in South Carolina where it is hot a lot, so I am more comfortable with running a higher viscosity oil.
There are a bunch of threads on oil. Read some of them and do what makes you comfortable.
For my 996 I only use Porsche approved lubricants.
With 51 modes of failure and growing only a Dealer, certified mechanic and "Factory" fluids are allowed to touch my ride.
The 996 is to delicate to attempt DIY service.
51 modes of failure?lol, Is that the official Raby number? I was thinking it was 31 or something. I'm thinking of starting a list to see may many we can officially come with as a group collectively..
As a mechanic i always get a laugh at this. I am a mechanic of over 20 years. I take pride in ever repair i do no matter the car i work on. I am honest and truthfull. But yet i don't work at the dealer so i can't work on that car. But yet if tomorrow i got hired at the dealer i would then be smart enough.
normally i wouldn't derail a thread but since this one is fake......
i have worked at dealers, private shops, and chains and here is what i have learned. You need to find a good mechanic and when you take your car in ask for him/her by name. Demand it. Recently we had a 35 year master toyota mechanic come work at our shop. He had retired from toyota and wanted a change before he hung up his wrenches. The sad part is he was the nicest guy but in our shop (any make and model) he didnt know crap. If it was a toyota he could diag it faster than anyone. Give him a chevy and he was lost. Somebody who was top of his game weeks before was no longer. I worked at a bmw dealer as a used car tech. Them bmw guys were smart. Until the used car side was too busy and they gave him a toyota.
i take pride in what i do. I am diligent in finding the problem. I never assume just because something looks like an issue or something i've seen before it is. Facts are the only thing that matters in diag. Do i claim to be faster than a porsche tech. Heck no! But i am sure most of the time we will come to the same conclusion.
the scariest part is for all thoses guys who are dead set on dealer only.......if you only knew how many guys are working on your car who really have no damn clue....or the 21 year old who just got out of class and thinks he knows everything because he was the best in his class..... how many horror stories have we all heard about a car that went in multiple time for the same problem and it wasnt fixed right the first time...most people at that point its a lemon.....umm...no...the tech pulled out the parts cannon.
How about the day an amazing porsch dealer tech gets fed up with the corporate crap and quits to work for an independant.....is he now too stupid to work on your car?
Ask your service advisor who is the best guy. Be prepared because he will be the guy with the most work load. Be patient. Know him by name. ........ and bring him doughnuts!
* I assume your post was a stab at the OP troller so not a stab at you.
Here in Phoenix AZ we rarely get down to 32F. After some relaxing reading Im close to settling on Motul XS8100 5w40 for my 02 C4S with ~97k. But my heart tells me I should go more viscous as we frequently are in the triple digits.
Opinions?
Related question here - I drive mine in fair weather only (45-90 degrees). Trying to decide between
Motul XS8100 5w40 and Mobil 1 0w40. Street use only.
Followup question - if I go w/ the M1, do I want the "european car formula" option?
FWIW, you guys may want to take a look at the following thread (which has greater info/participation than this stale thread does) regarding what type of oil is "best" to use in your 996:

say what!!!???
Servicing these is a doddle. I also have italian bikes, the mantra is the same...............
Oil is cheap, engines are not, change the oil as often as you can
Buy a proper Manual
Get a couple of torque wrenches
Read up and Google stuff before lifting tools.
do one job at a time.
