The camber plates replace the stock front shock mounts and allow for an additional 1.0-1.5 degrees of negative camber.

Suggestion
As jumper5836 said it isn't the issue of toe when you perform the alignment, I can zero the toe but instead when driven hard the factory bushings are deflecting enough to change toe and cause tire wear.

After a couple spirited test drives I can report that the coilover kit meets my expectations almost spot-on.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Finished this big (for me) job today. Took me the entire weekend to get the coilovers installed, then spent yesterday evening fussing with ride height and rear sway bars. Still have to get a proper wheel alignment - just did a quick and dirty front toe correction tonight to make the car safe enough to drive to a shop. 28mm spacers in the front and 21mm rear. Tires are 225/40 front and 265/35 rear. Snapped a few pictures to illustrate the stance. No rubbing over bumps. The fronts come very close to brushing the fender liners on full lock.
In terms of alignment I'm going to aim for about 2-2.5 degrees camber all around.
I took a bunch of pictures of the install and will write up a full thread with my own DIY instructions. It was all pretty straightforward. Instead of pulling balljoints in the front or loosening the control arms as some suggest I simply disassembled the original strut in the wheel well to get it out.
I'll have further driving impressions after a wheel alignment and thorough opportunity to test it out. My initial impressions are that it's a very comfortable street suspension setup - a modest tightening up over the M030 suspension but nothing crazy.
Looks really good, on my list of things to do to complete the look of the outside. Next on the list is a new vert top, replacing the faded plastic bumper insert and then lowering.
That looks really really good! Curious about what's the widest tires those wheels would accept at stock height without clearance issues. The stock size gives pretty limited options to choose from.
Yessir, that is correct.
Did an alignment last night in the garage with SmartStrings. Got the camber set to -2.0 all around (in those pictures above it was -3 on the left and -3.5 on the right!). Also raised it up by 7mm all around since those pictures.
After a couple spirited test drives I can report that the coilover kit meets my expectations almost spot-on. It's a much more controlled ride than the stock (probably worn out) M030 setup, while still being complaint and comfy over bumps around town. The biggest change I notice is front axle feel. There is much more immediate and direct steering response, and the car really wants to go where you point it. I think the combination of solid strut mounts, negative camber, and wider track all contribute to this. Overall I'm very pleased with the H&R Street setup, and I think it's well balanced for daily driving duties. My impression is that you need to stay near the top of the adjustment range - any lower and the spring/damping rate isn't enough to control the body over rolling bumps. I also suspect that this suspension setup might be too soft for serious track use.
Before and after pics below
You should have put in the rear toe control arm, the camber plates not really needed unless you want stock camber but the rear toe arms will save you on rear tires being eating up on the inside.
I was able to achieve my desired alignment in the rear without them. Mine was a fairly modest drop - might be more necessary with greater lowering, especially if you try to maintain close to normal camber.
The camber plates replace the stock front shock mounts and allow for an additional 1.0-1.5 degrees of negative camber. My goal was to have equal camber front and rear.
OK I see I was talking about the rear. I think your right about needing them on the front to get more camber. I havn't done anything to the front and seems to be ok right now. Problem is that the rear toe has rubber bushings and under load will get way out of wack now due to being lowered and eat the inside edge of the rear tires. I did not have to do camber plates as the rear camber already allows -2.4 and higher but if I wanted to get near stock -1.5 is impossible with out the distance being shortened which would require dog bones or maybe something else.
So, what has to be done to lower/raise the car once the coilovers are installed?
Are they easily adjusted with the car in the air, or do you have to detach the bottom of the coilover from the wheel hubs?
My C2 with Feals, I only have to detach the rears in order to adjust.
A C4 with Feals has to have the bottom detached in front and rear.
Just curious about H&R Street coilovers.
I have a set of H&R Club Sport coilovers setting in a box next to my 996.2 C2 waiting for another 996 C2 to come along.
Very easy to adjust the ride height without detaching either end of the coil over. I just jack up the car one side at a time, take the wheels off, then spin the spring perch to the desired height. And obviously any change in ride height requires an alignment afterwords.
Awesome!
The Feals might be adjustable in front without removal, although the C4 was too hard to turn when the bottom was mounted.
The rear definitely has to be disconnected, and actually had to be completely removed on the C4. (Clearance issue)
Ill find out about the C2 rears when I finally adjust mine...soon-ish.
So THAT is an advantage(Big one) for the H&R coilovers.
You have no idea how much headache you just saved me, I have been fighting poor inside rear wear since I first lowered my 996 and started tracking heavy. I always assumed it was a camber issue but would still develop even at 2". Thank you.
