So if I understand correctly, you had to replace the bracket which the nav unit slides into.

But going back to my initial question: if I cut out the cross bar and some of the screw holes (yellow line on pic no1), I should be able to fit the nav unit in there without having to replace the entire bracket...?

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I own a 996.2 Targa w/ bose sound. I purchased an OEM Nav head unit from a 996 compatible with bose.
Anyone did this retrofit in the past? The plastic frame is split into two section (previously for the climate module and radio). The nav unit is obviously much larger and needs a larger opening. Did you guys had to cut the plastic frame to make room for the nav head unit? Would like your feedback before I start cutting!
Thanks
Not sure about 996.2 but my 99 came with navigation and it has a separate mounting frame and surround. I doubt you need to cut anything if it is a stock unit and you have the correct mounting parts.
You need a new front plastic frame and a new metal mounting bracket that supports the cup holder. You can cut the bar out of your existing one, but I wouldn’t. You will also need a new bezel when you relocate your hvac controller to the bottom of the console.
I do have the bezel for the climate control and it's already been relocated at the bottom.
When you say "a new metal bracket to support the cup holder", i'm not sure I follow. The cup holder is secure in place and works fine.
Now when you refer to the "new plastic frame", do you mean the frame that you push the nav unit unto? (The one I want to modify on mine). Or the trim (bezel) that finish the install when everything is in place?
So if I understand correctly, you had to replace the bracket which the nav unit slides into. In other words, the part that I'm considering cutting and modifying... Question is; other than the larger square opening, is this "new" part different than the standard one?
If you're looking at my first pic on post no1, this is #24... So I'm not sure I understand how you could've used this part, knowing that the nav unit can't fit in it.
Did you notice that the new nav support doesn’t have the cross bar like yours? The exploded picture is the mount you currently have. I couldn’t find a diagram with the correct mount, but I posted a picture and part # of the one you need.
I understand what you say. But going back to my initial question: if I cut out the cross bar and some of the screw holes (yellow line on pic no1), I should be able to fit the nav unit in there without having to replace the entire bracket...?
Gotcha! Cutting your current bracket would probably work. I replaced mine because it was only like $50 for a new one, and wanted the option to return to stock.
I just installed a double din radio. For the metal brace part #19, I was able to drill the rivets out that holds the tabs on each side. I was able to then slide in the double din unit with no interference. That may work with your nave unit.
