Suggestion
For guys that do this kind of stuff all the time yes, for guys that just change there oil and filter, it can be a little nerve wracking to remove the nuts from the motor mounts and lower the motor a couple inches IMO.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Greetings everyone!
well, I decided to do preventative maintenance on my 996. She has 130,000 miles on her with the original water pump. Called the dealer to do a replace the pump. The dealership is 110 miles from my house, and on the way up I get the red flashing light for low coolant. Car is running great no issues, no noise, and temperature gauge is where it is supposed to be. I pull into the dealership, shut her down, get out, and the pump bearing lets go! Pukes all the coolant everywhere. Talk about perfect timing! Three plus hours later, back on the road!
It ain't that easy. For guys that do this kind of stuff all the time yes, for guys that just change there oil and filter, it can be a little nerve wracking to remove the nuts from the motor mounts and lower the motor a couple inches IMO. I did that and the coolant tank. Being a pencil pusher, I was a bit nervous during the process.
time value. It's easier for some to pay someone else, and hang out with their friends and family...OP nice timing. I can mow my lawn does not mean I'm gonna do it.
Thanks! It was one of those moments! And I did go get a lottery ticket lol!
For labor, coolant, complete flush, and a belt (I already had the pump and gasket), was $1,000
For me, it was worth the time and convenience. It was a bit cha-ching, but I was out of there in about four hours, got to visit with a buddy, and it didnt fail on me locally.
Ironically, I bought the pump and gasket to do it myself, but decided that I didnt have the time.
I did get the thumbs up there on my Fabspeed Supercups. You could definitely hear them.
I did it, but I didn't find it to be an easy DIY. It's messy and one of the bolts on the water pump is tough to remove and replace. It took me a whole day to do.
That is an amazing coincidence!!! So fortunate! Did you have any precursor subconscious indications that led you to want to do the PM? I wonder if you were smelling coolant in your sleep.
Some years ago my water pump gave out with absolutely no warning as I pulled into a parking space at the airport and dumped all the coolant in the parking lot. I was late for my flight, locked the car, ran to the gate and called my wife from the airplane and she drove up and took care of it for me. Reason #zillion we've been married for so long.
You do know that since you've supplied the pump/gasket, the dealer will only cover installation related issues and the rest will be covered by your already lightened wallet?

The ims will explode killing him and everyone near him, exposing scored bores and a failing aos before the water pump is an issue. Relax it's his coin and a fun story.
Btw did you ask with the dealer to show you your old water-pump to see how those composite fins fare over all these years? Basically, you want to see all fins intact on the WP because others have seen some missing fins or missing pieces of the fins. It's also good to check on the WP bearings. Thanks,
Hi everyone-
there was no warning, no noise, no leaks, or overheating.
Saw the pump, bearing and seal, impeller fins were intact.
Supplying my own parts had to be in original Porsche boxes with stickers, tags, seals, etc... intact.
Ahhhhhh, the IMS will grenade next because it got wet with coolant lol! Along with the alternator cable and seatbelt buckle.
And no dice on the lottery. If I had won it, I would have bought every single one of you your favorite beverage!
Very cool story.
I had something kind of similar happen. My previous E36 M3 was due for the cooling system to be replaced. I have so many cars, I rarely drove it so I put it off. I had all the new parts at my house.
At the last minute, I decided to take it to go to a meeting about 15 miles away. I left a little too early so I decided to make a stop at the bank. On my way from the bank, I had to head back towards my house to go to my original planned location. As I get to the closest point to my house before heading away from it, my radiator cracks!!
I was about 1 mile from my house. I waited about 30 mins for the car to cool off. Then I was able to drive it home. Parked it and hopped into my other car. I would not have been able to make it to the meeting had I not gone to the bank.
So glad it broke then!
