You could most likely just undo the rear of the headliner by itself, inspect the clips to see if they have the "hockey tape" on them, which was from the factory and then re-install.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

As part of my interior upgrade, I bought an alcantara headliner from quality Porsche parts (ebay vendor). $150 shipped....just had to do it as I love my alcantara. Yesterday I put it in, used some simple instructions I found online, plus the factory manual to explain how to take the sunroof out of the car. The whole process was painless except the sunroof, need to take it out again and get it aligned better, it wouldn't close without some upward force on it from inside, the torque switch would then trip and it would open back up. To get it out and back in, was only about 1.5 hours....then I screwed around with the sunroof for another hour and a half. But now I know what I am doing and I will figure out how everything works next time I take it apart. Old vinyl headliner for poor people: New shiny: I have a nasty bumping noise that comes from the sunroof area going over bumps, figured it out today that it is the back of the sunroof liner on the driver's side isn't attached to the sunroof. Looks like somebody before me was trying to fix it, found this rag in the area where the sunroof goes. All done, have to silicone the sun visor clip thing on the passenger side, there are very small clips on the side of it that clip on the base, probably broken one. Nice upgrade! The guy who designed this was a genius, it was so easy to swap out.

POST 2Original post

Awesome job. I need to replace mine soon. I will be calling for advice!

POST 3Original post

Very nice! I didn't even realize that any 996s were equipped with vinyl heal liners. Nice upgrade...

POST 4Original post

Wow...That looks sweet! It didn't look bad before though... poor people? I thought all 996 owners are poor Nice job ! Do they make that in Savannah Beige Alcantara? Uh oh... My roof liner and the sun visors are vinyl in my car ...

Yeah the differences between a loaded 996 and a base is incredibly stark. I tend to forget exactly how much different our leather packages make our car over all the plastic in the base configuration.

POST 8Original post

How is the overall fit and finish of the product and installation?

POST 9Original post

It looks okay, not a big fan of suede and I wonder how it will clean up when used as a DD. Nice job on the install however props!I prefer the easy wipe down of leather or vinyl.

POST 11Original post

Why can't I get over this "Poor People" statement? LMAO all day just thinking about this.....

Looks factory because it is factory. It's awesome. I have an alcantara headliner in my Audi, and had alcantara inserts that I retrofitted to my seats on an older car that I had, I love the look and feel. I wish I could get some alcantara seats in the car, it does not appear they ever came to the states in the 996, but I've seen them on ebay.de for pretty cheap money.

Nice job Paul, thanks for sharing your latest mod.

POST 14Original post

Just what are you doing that you have to clean your roof liner regularly? Ours is almost 14 and spent the early half of its life as a DD and has never needed the roof liner cleaned. Or are you the guy that sold a C4 that we looked at while wait on ours? We were out test driving it and looked up to see coffee stains all over the (vinyl) liner. We asked the dealer about it and their response was "oh, thats normal". Seriously. Normal?

POST 17Original post

Looks great! How is the very rear of the liner attached? Mine has a slight rattle at the very rear, but only in really cold weather.

POST 18Original post

Did you clean out your drains or inspect them by chance? This would've been a good time to do so.

POST 20 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The rear just has built in "U" shaped clips that go across the headliner, about 5 or 6 of them. You could most likely just undo the rear of the headliner by itself, inspect the clips to see if they have the "hockey tape" on them, which was from the factory and then re-install. Just put one of the seats forward and hop in the back seat, pull the headliner closest to the left or the right back towards the engine and see if it disengages, then just work your way across. Considering I had my whole thing in and then realized that one of the clips on the right hand side was not seated correctly and had to pull it back off, you should be able to do this. If it's cold out, make sure you warm your car interior up first. It's easy to pull back, has to move maybe an inch or less and it come out of the roof receiver for the U shaped clip. Here is the picture of mine, the second clip from the left is broken off, it's 7 across. The back of the headliner is in the back of the picture here: And no, I did not inspect my sunroof drains.

POST 21Original post

Thanks Paul, that helps a lot! I've been meaning to address it, and in retrospect, probably haven't simply because I didn't have that info.

POST 22Original post

Paul, is it possible to replace the headliner without removing the sunroof? That part of mine is fine. I have a tear above the drivers head from my helmet camera mount snagging it.

POST 23 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Gator: Yes, there is. You just follow the instructions here: http://www.6speedonline.com/forums/9...headliner.html As the poster states, once the sunroof is back as far as it will go electrically, you manually crank it out of the way further back and the headliner can come out of the sunroof hole.
