I recently bought a 2002 996 and while I was replacing the bose stereo, I decided to clean the climate control. The previous owner spilled soda on it or something. This is my first DIY post so forgive me if I have done it incorrectly. I removed the NAV CD unit above the climate control for a stereo install. I do not think you need to remove it to get to the unit. Remove the side panels and lower panel. They just pull off, no screws. Remove the torx screws holding in the unit. There are three screws on the bottom of the unit. I did not get a pic but you can't miss them. I think they are phillips head. Take the front panel off the unit. Remove the membrane and clean it. I used glass cleaner. Remove the buttons and clean them. I used glass cleaner. Mine were super sticky. Annoyed me every time I used them. If you look on the lower right of the circuit board, you will see a discolored area. That was the previous owners spilled soda. I cleaned it with electronics cleaner because I have it but if I didn't, I would have used glass cleaner. Don't use electronics cleaner on the screen, use glass cleaner instead. Clean the rest of the spilled soda you can find in the areas you can see then re-install the climate control unit. I am so much happier now when I press a button that doesn't have a nasty sticky feeling.
