Last time I checked, the heat shields are made of aluminum.
Leading evidence: 'Check the heat shields are made of aluminum' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check the heat shields are made of aluminum' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. I proactively changed the coils on my 2000 C2 after 20 years.

Suggestion
I have only replaced 1 coil on my 2000 Boxster S because the boot was a bit worn, so I just bought the whole coil & boot so I would have a spare for next time.

They are constantly replacing the heat shields on cars they service.

Looks good, just cleaning mine during plug/coil change made a difference.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I actually made some heat shields for my Boxster out of diamond plate using the heat shields from my 996 as templates. The diamond plate cost me around $10 at H*me Dep*t, and a few hours to cut, shape and drill the new shields.
Looks good, just cleaning mine during plug/coil change made a difference. Feel like these would stand out real bad against the rest of the dirt and grime under there lol.
Last time I checked, the heat shields are made of aluminum. Rust/rot is not a common problem. They may deteriorate over time from heat and exposure to road debris and chemicals, but in my experience, they hold up very well.
Am I wrong here guys?
The Porsche manual I have calls them "Trim Pieces" not heat shields. I think they're just for keeping road grime off the coils. Yes, they are aluminum and I've never heard of them rotting out. If you have money burning a hole in your pocket go ahead. I'm sure they add 30 thermal hp and 200 liters of torque.
There may be an advantage: The more reflective the shield ==> more heat reflected from exhaust system ==> coils lower temperature ==> coils last longer.

I have only replaced 1 coil on my 2000 Boxster S because the boot was a bit worn, so I just bought the whole coil & boot so I would have a spare for next time. Maybe because of the So.CA weather.
Didnt mean to upset any of you guys on here. I dont think you can directly advertise a part so have to use smoke and mirrors.
either way its not gone down well with some of you its just a little project I did for my own car and made a few extra while I was at it. the oem parts on my car were steel and very rotten must be the UK weather!
Holy smokes, I can see why you were reluctant to replace those with the same thing. On the MkI 996's, we have aluminum heatshields, so corrosion isn't really an issue. I wasn't aware the MKII's had steel.
I have an M96/04 (2000-2001)- so clearly MKI... The heat shields are galvanized steel. They will rust if the coating is scratched/scraped off or thin for some reason. The heat doesn't help either, and that area is exposed to dampness and road salt - come to think of it, they protect the coils from much more than just heat
I follow Friends Green Porsche (a UK shop that refurbs and sells a lot of 996's) on youtube. They are constantly replacing the heat shields on cars they service. Maybe RoW cars got steel heatshields? dunno.
Anyway, good channel to checkout:

I would also imagine that cars that are driven up north during the winter and exposed to salt/sand mixtures experience this deteriorating effect too. When I visited friend up north, I was surprised to see so many cars with rusted rocker panels and fenders. Guess the metal treatment can only do so much to mitigate this problem.
I also follow them. Very good YT channel. Funny thing, I posted question about approximate cost of a trans bearing. They offered to give me a quote. Transporting my C4S to UK might be kind of pricey!
Lord knows Id love to have my car there when I do visit again. Even thought of approaching FGP to see if theyd lease just for 2-3 week period.
