I had a rear go on me and I used a plastic bag to cover my passenger seat and put the tire on it...the spare works very well....look for that plastic container next to the spare under the false floor....thats where my air pump is.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a few newbie questions...(sorry, gonna have more of such to come) The spare tire/wheel in my front trunk ('02 C4S) looks to me like a collapsible/inflatable type, which is a first time for me. Is it supposed to come with an air compressor? The car didn't come with one when I bought it used, so I'm wondering. Is the tire supposed to just pop out full when inflated? What happens after I've used it and wants to put it back in the trunk? Will the crease affect the spare tire if it's been stored unused for a long time? Thanks!

POST 2Original post

You should have an air compressor stored with the spare tire. Here are some pics of the one that came in my car (sorry about the low quality). You could replace it with any style but, as you know, space limited and the Porsche compressor fits nicely. I've never inflated the C4S spare but my 928 spare inflated to a seemingly normal diameter and then returned to it's compact size once it was deflated. It was a little tough to fit it back into the trunk but not a big deal. AFIK, it had never been inflated until that day.

POST 3Original post

hmm, i did not know C4 had a spare. always thought a spare is not possible due to small trunk in awd 911's.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Scott! I needed to know that. I wonder how much the dealer will try to squeeze out of me for that. djantive: the spare in my C4S is horizontally flat in the front trunk area, under a carpeted panel. That's probably the reason why you don't see it and thought it's not there. The rear wheel drive 911's have their spare standing up vertically.

POST 5Original post

got it, thanks! BTW, you can get a small compressor for $20 at any autoparts store. They run off of the cig lighter socket. Otherwise, you can pay $100 for a Porsche one on EBay.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yeah, I was thinking of getting one from Sears. And I'd probably never ever use it, or maybe once. Or call roadside assistance which is provided free by my insurance!

POST 7Original post

Actually if you think about it after you put the spare on. What are you going to do with the injured tire?? Are you going to put it in the car on your nice leather interior?? The rear tires are big. What if you have a passenger and some bags in the back. You may want to carry a repair kit/plug type or consider a tow(flat bed) if this senario plays out.

POST 8Original post

I got a flat tire on the way to a Lime Rock DE last week in my '99 C4, and had the pleasure of using my mini-spare and air pump for the first time after an unsuccessful attempt to use Fix-A-Flat (valve stem was shot). It actually worked quite well! The car still had the large heavy-duty plastic bag in which to place the flat tire which I then placed on the rear shelf. Fortunately I didn't have any additional luggage back there. Once home, I just released the air and it shrunk down to (almost) its pre-inflation size. I used a strap to get the final half inch diameter reduction, **** as I am. Another tip is to carry a spare 15 amp fuse since my first one blew part way through the inflation process. Yes, I could have used AAA, but I would have been late getting to the track!

Here's a thread I started not too long ago. https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...ght=sPARE+TIRE

POST 10Original post

The rear will just fit in the front trunk with the spare removed, at least on the C2 it does. Not sure about the C4.

POST 12Original post

Does anyone know what the red ring (adapter?) is on the plug for the C4S tire compressor? I noticed the plastic clips snapped and fell off of mine. The compressor plug works fine and stays seated when plugged-in with out the red ring.
