Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

11 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

I had a BMW E60 with an N52 engine that was notorious for the lifter noise (search any BMW forum for hours of enjoyment) and opinions varied from trusted techs to "no big deal" to "OMG get that fixed!" I chose the former and never had an issue with the car for the several years and tens of thousands of miles as a DD.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Haven't driven her in a while (maybe a month). Started her up today and didn't like the sound of the engine. Seems to be running fine, but I swear I don't remember this much "ticking"...thoughts? https://www.dropbox.com/sh/s621ocf1j...WDtP58m9a?dl=0 Thanks

POST 2Original post

Yes, it sounds bad. All the oil has drained into the pan from sitting too long. The lifters and other engine parts are getting pumped up and re-lubricated. If oil level is good and oil pressure is good, go for a twenty mile drive. Bet it won't sound so bad then.

Thanks...too late now for me to go now. I think I'll take her to work tomorrow and then see how it sounds when I get home. Will post a follow up video then.

POST 4Original post

I'm not a mechanic but if it's present at cold start up and goes away as the engine reaches operating temperature, it is pretty classic for valve lifter noise.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

That's kind of what I was thinking...but I'm no mechanic either...and then the question is how much valve lifter noise...if any...is "OK"

POST 6Original post

Not sure. My 996 C4S makes no such noise though, so I've never looked into it on RL but my guess is that the opinions here would lean more towards the "OMG" ilk.

POST 7Original post

It doesn't sound bad at all. Fracking forum has gotten to y'all...

POST 8Original post

I get the same noise at cold start up. I live up nort, so it's cold like in NJ. Mine goes away 30 seconds after startup and doesn't happen unless I let it sit for overnight.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks again for all the input. I drove it to work today so I'll check it when I get home after a 60 mile trip and see what it sounds like.

My thoughts exactly. I have a little tick on my car occasionally. Hasn't gotten worse in 13,000 miles. I'm not sweating it. It's an engine, it makes noise. If it gets any worse, take it in. I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

POST 11Original post

Have you ever been under it immediately after a cold startup? THAT is a scary noise!
