BTW, i completely forgot to address your actual problem, that sounds like a syncro going, one thing to pay attention to with gearbox rebuilders, is to make sure they replace ALL the syncro's, sometimes they will skip the ones that aren't worn and and need to be reminded that this is a premium job- experience gained years ago with my E30 M3....
Leading evidence: 'Use transmission' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace syncro's, sometimes they will skip the ones' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

If you require replacement gears, these seem to run around 40-50bucks a pop, but in my experience these are not often wear items.

with that said I no longer pay for rebuilds- I would rather find a good used transmission or dump the car.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all, I'm new here. I'm looking to buy a 1999 996 c4 that has transmission issues. It pops out of first gear and there is an audible crunch or grind going from third to fourth gear. Anyone have issues similar to this? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
I live in chattanooga, tn. The guy who's selling it said he priced a rebuild from Porsche for $9500. What would you suggest? That's pretty stiff in all honesty.
Here is the thing (my personal take, and we all know about opinions, so feel free to ignore me), if you listen to people on the various forums they will tell you that the transmissions are made out of congealed unicorn blood and need this or that magic water to lubricate them and of course it has to be XXXXXXX expensive.
Fact is, it is just a transmission, nothing else, no special metals, not magic syncros, not unobtainium oil or rubber seals, just standard manufactured gearboxes by an outsourcing company that has been making 1000000's of these for many years. Any shop that rebuilds transmissions will be able to rebuild it, as will you given the tools and attention to detail. Saying that, I am a bit **** about workmanship, so I would like to think that the person rebuilding my transmission specializes in that type of transmission (probably complete and utter rubbish, but hey it makes me feel good), and has many rebuilds under his belt.
You didn't specify whether this is a manual or an auto, so I am going to assume it is a manual (and we know all about assumptions right?). AAMCO is not my friend, as I want someone who sees more of these transmissions per week than AAMCO do in a 10 year period, so I am going to look for someone who "specializes" in transaxles. There are many of these shops around the country, and I know of one near me in southern Cali, who charges $1100 labour, plus parts. Given that it will take roughly 8-10 hours to rebuild a transmission- generous estimate), that is about the price I would consider reasonable.
Parts are a different story, but if you look at the various mail order parts places, you can see that rebuild kits for 996 transaxles are roughly a grand to a grand and a half, most other versions are running at similar prices. This will include shims, syncros, bearings, gaskets and various other bit and pieces. If you require replacement gears, these seem to run around 40-50bucks a pop, but in my experience these are not often wear items.
I personally would be pissed if someone was trying to charge me more than 2.5k for a gearbox rebuild.
To wit, I hope this helps, the guys I was talking about in SOCAL are Rancho Transaxles, but you should be able to find someone much closer to where you are.
Very well put. My thoughts exactly. I'm new to Porsche but have always wanted to own one and wasn't sure if parts were readily available other than the dealer. And yes it's a manual 6 speed trans. I own a 6speed bmw 540i at the moment and do all the repairs..etc myself so I'm no stranger to tearing a trans out. Just unfamiliar territory as far as Porsche goes.

You can guesstimate until the cows come home but until the transmission is openned up, you have no idea what it need to fix it. For all you know the gears could be worn and those are not cheap to replace. The cheapest and safest thing is to buget for a good used transmission.
My personal experience with transmission rebuilds are not good at all. Every single one that I paid to have done - at various shops have always had the same result..'it just doesn't feel like it used to'...
with that said I no longer pay for rebuilds- I would rather find a good used transmission or dump the car.
When I first bought my car 4 years ago it had a loud gearbox. I had an extended warranty with the deal. They changed out the gearbox for a reconditioned or used one (not sure which) in LA breakers yard for less then 5 grand. It's doing fine since over the passed 28000 miles.
I have known these guys for years - local shop to me. They are always working on GT3 and turbo boxes. They specialize and only work on Porsche boxes. They also pioneered the 2nd gear pop out fix. Might be worth a shot. -

JTB1 gives excellent advice.
I am rebuilding two of these gearboxes now. They are much more difficult than older Porsche gearboxes and much more expensive for parts.
Thanks for all the input. The guy wants 8500 for the 996 but I'm offering 7150. The body is in good condition and I heard the engine crank on a cold start. It sounds good and it has 94k on the odometer.
