When I inspected the throttle body, it didn't look very dirty, but there was some black gunk around the inside of the flap, close to the pivot points.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My '01 C4 Tip was a little sluggish off the line. If I hit the accelerator hard, there was a 1/2 second delay. After reading up on this forum, all symptoms indicated a dirty throttle body. I ordered a gasket from Pelican Parts, got a can of carburetor cleaning fluid and followed the detailed directions for removal of the throttle body on the Pelican Parts web site. It didn't look that dirty to me, initially, but once I started cleaning, I could see a gunk that had developed over time. Cleaned it is as good as I could with a lint free rag and tools to get as close as I could around the hinge. Wow, what a difference it made. I think I gained an additional second in 0-70 performance. I found that it hits red line 100 ft quicker on the strip where I normally take the car to "blow out the carbon". Also, car seems to run a little smoother now, in general. Overall, the cleanup was pretty easy. Recommend if you haven't had it done for a few years.

POST 2Original post

After reading a couple of stories about throttle body cleaning, I think this is exactly what I need to get rid of my low RPM hesitation. Good to hear the cleaning was a success! Looks like it's time to order a TB gasket!

POST 4Original post

The improvement was probably coincidence. I think you'll probably find the AOS is at the root cause of the behavior you attributed to the dirty throttle body. Also, if this was dirty enough to need cleaning it is probably dirty from a failing AOS, which connects to the intake manifold right behind the TB. Also, if you have not done it for a while perform an E-gas recalibration. The steps to this are outlined in the car's owners manual.

POST 5Original post

Last spring, I had a strange rough running condition that started suddenly. It seemed very rough at idle. Within a few days the engine (again suddenly) lost the ability to accelerate at all. I actually had to limp the car home a couple of miles at a high idle speed. I hooked up a code reader and read a code that referred to a throttle body return spring error. So I pulled the TB and cleaned it with TB cleaner. I also pulled the MAF sensor and cleaned that with MAF cleaner. The car ran perfect again with smoother idle and acceleration than before. No problems or codes now in 8 months and 5K miles. I too did not think my TB was very dirty. It probably does not take much in the way of deposits to impact the TB plate movement though. Now, the problem may have been TB related or MAF related, I don't know which since I cleaned both at once. Its an easy DIY maintenance to try if you have similar conditions. If the TB gets dirty again quickly, the AOS could be at fault as Macster noted above.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

When I inspected the throttle body, it didn't look very dirty, but there was some black gunk around the inside of the flap, close to the pivot points. I did a thorough cleaning and it's running smoothly. I'll pay attention to how long this lasts. I've had the car for about 5 yrs. now and it's always had that hesitation upon rapid acceleration. I wasn't aware of the recalibration for eGas. I'll have a look and see what's required. Thanks for the tip.
