Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

definately looking at muffler delete but i drive a lot of highway so cats will probably be replaced with some nicer ones.
Leading evidence: 'Replace with some nicer ones' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'helmholtz resonator' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check eng light' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Nothing against Fabspeeds exhaust (great stuff) but I didn't like how low the rumble was so I sold them used for $500.

That fourth pipe is probably a Helmholtz resonator.

I wonder how much a muffler shop would charge to make a similar set but keeping my stock cats?

but that was by choice, the cats I have are the same size as the mufflers so it would have been no extra work to use the cats for either my upper or lower pair.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Has anyone had a custom exhaust made for their 996? Looking at replacing everything due to some broken bolts and it just looking terrible+ any possible exhaust leaks. definately looking at muffler delete but i drive a lot of highway so cats will probably be replaced with some nicer ones. Just not looking to spend thousands on 2 feet of tube. Looking for pricing and pictures of what you had done.
My recommendation is to find an OEM exhaust in better shape and have the Fister D mod done to it. Best bang for the buck. Amazingly, it is one of the best sounding exhausts for our car and it's not very expensive or hard to do. Most muffler shops should be able to do it for you.
Here is my custom exhaust by Charles Dundon….I will let him disclose pricing if he desires....it extracts industry leading HP and gets kudos for the sound except from neighbors. :-)
Thanks for the kind words...there is some science behind the whole thing....The forth pipe is sealed but is Charles's secret sauce to extract more power....the 997S engine with that exhaust provides an equivalent of 400hp...this winter will be tuned further.
Here is a clip but does not do it justice....the crackling is almost like my lambo on the street.

The fourth closed off pipe is for pulse tuning. The length of the pipe is calculated to reflect exhaust pulse waves back into the collector, which helps with scavenging.
Weird how the clip in my post disappeared but its there in the quotes...

Don't know how to fix that
just click on the link in one of the quotes.
That fourth pipe is probably a Helmholtz resonator. Not so uncommon for custom exhausts. It is used to fine tune the exhaust sound, i.e. filter out droning frequencies. The filtering characteristics depend on the volume/length of the resonator.

of my build thread if you want to see all the pics and info. I hate to post links in others threads but you can search my subscribed threads if you want for Widebody build.
The skinny on it is I read a post from a sound engineer on some forum (don't remember where it was) and basically said short and skinny would get the quickest cycle of rumble and higher pitched sounds for an exhaust. I HAVE NO IDEA IF THATS TRUE!!! but I did it anyway
and my exhaust sounds like a race car and I love it. Something comparable is quite expensive. Somewhere in the thread is a link to my youtube channel where you can hear it as well if you would like.
It probably doesn't look as pretty as Fabspeed exhausts which is what I had on there before but I
did
achieve the sound I wanted. Nothing against Fabspeeds exhaust (great stuff) but I didn't like how low the rumble was so I sold them used for $500. Its all about preference
Here's my custom exhaust. It's pretty loud and has a bit of drone at cruising speeds but....man, does it sound good! If memory serves me correctly, it produced an additional 22whp and 10wtq over the OEM setup.

Man that looks really good, I wish I had your welding talent. Post a link as this is an old thread that obviously died. It would be beneficial to others searching!
It wasn't that hard to do and for the money I think it was absolutely worth it.

Youtube video/channel has a few vids where you can hear the exhaust. Some sound better than others three videos pertaining to the exhaust.

Yes and yes. I have the set up for the two high flow cats as well for it if I want to swap them on making it two mufflers and two cats. The o2 sensors I took out and yes I have the engine light on. but that was by choice, the cats I have are the same size as the mufflers so it would have been no extra work to use the cats for either my upper or lower pair.
My build was done with the intension of a motor swap so please keep that in mind before some one gives me guff on that lol For me... I love my set up and get lots of rev requests and is music to my ears lol
They sound really good in the video..
I wonder how much a muffler shop would charge to make a similar set but keeping my stock cats? But I have to many things on the "needs" list before I can get to the "wants" list, lol.
I just want to make sure there's no drone in the sweet spot at cruising speed (not that I have much road to cruise very long before I end up in the water.
not sure where your located but I could do it for ya. probably cheaper then a shop.
They sound a little better in person. I don't know how to get a good sound video, someone said I need to mount the mic by the rear bumper but when I get close with my phone the phone cuts out the sound. my wife recorded the video and she said the same thing.. doesn't sound as good in the vid as in person. sounds a little higher pitched in person.
Anyway, thanks.
oh ya my exhaust system weighs 15lbs
shaved a lot of weight doing this exhaust
In Hawaii on the little island of Kauai. With only one muffler shop and the owners an absolute *****!
I really appreciate the offer but shipping anything here is a killer. Lets talk later about this, I might take you up on it but need to finish this AOS replacement before anything.
Thanks!
.
I'm very interested in the performance improvements.
My custom system with only mufflers produced an additional 22whp/10wtq...I'm curious to see what this system does with full length headers and no cats.
I'm moving to WA next month so I'll definitely be visiting his shop in the near future.
