POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all. I recently purchased a 996 from a private owner who took beautiful care of the car. Service records are all with receipts including RMS and IMS bearings replaced 10k miles ago. The paint and everything is good but what I am most concerned are the fabspeed exhaust the car has on it. Don't get me wrong, it sounds great but the drone below 3k rpm is just horrific. I plan on driving it as a daily driver and the drone is near unbearable. Are there any fixes besides just throwing a new exhaust on there as that is quite expensive. Thanks!

POST 2Original post

My 2004 AE has Fister ( https://fdmotorsports.net/ ) exhaust which is a professional variant of the Gundo mod that is popular. It makes the exhaust tones more powerful especially under power, but at idle and low load (think tooling around town or at constant freeway speeds) its like stock. No drone at any speed or rev range. My my suggestion is return it to stock or go with Fister. Yes there is a cost but in the world of 996 those two options arent too bad.

POST 3Original post

Sell it and buy used stock mufflers and gundo them. Will sound amazing and you might pocket some $$

POST 4Original post

Check your motor mounts. I had some minor drone on new Dansk mufflers. I changed my worn mounts and the drone disappeared.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I will try and go to a mechanic shop to see if the previous owner had a muffler delete or cat removed etc. Would resonator tips work?

POST 6Original post

Are they fabspeed Supercups….that is what I had trouble with. When I went to maxflo the drone went away.

POST 7Original post

Don't drive under 3K, just keep the revs up and its better for the motor!

POST 8Original post

Does it has OEM headers? If not I would start there and put back a set of original exhaust manifolds and see if the drone-linked frequencies of the exhaust shifts more to a frequency band where the mufflers attenuate better or it resonates less.

POST 9Original post

I have Maxflow and there's not a bad drone. I also daily drive mine 52 miles. SuperCup or muffler deletes might not be so DD friendly.

POST 10Original post

"I have Maxflow and there's not a bad drone." ^^This^^ - Fabspeed makes many products. "Fabspeed exhaust" is a little general. FWIW I found my maxflo mufflers were a little more "droney" with the stock headers as opposed to the Agency Headers I have on my car now. Even so, it was nowhere near what I would consider bad or unbearable...perhaps a nice Camry would be appropriate for you? Doh! - just kidding

POST 11Original post

Contact FS and see what they suggest. I had this issue when the 3rd gen HEMI came out and we where dealing with Magnaflow. They revised they're design and created an x-pipe to fix the issue.

POST 12Original post

If they are supercups, I'd trade ya my factory mufflers

Hey guys, Scott here from Fabspeed, sorry you're not in love with your Fabspeed set up. Any idea what system you have? 996 take to the Maxflo's very nicely, the Supercup is a bit more aggressive. We typically recommend the Supercup for more track use, however many of my customers like either one for daily driving. Take a look under your car and let me know what system you have, I'll reach out and PM you directly! Maxflo: Supercup:

POST 14Original post

I run the Maxflo, header, and catless X-pipe as well with zero droning issues - so I'd guess you're probably looking at Super Cups. I wish there were an 'in between' between the SC and MF series of muffler.

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi! Because the owner I bought the car from recently passed away, I have no idea what fabspeed he has on nor if he had mufflers take out etc. I will bring it to a mechanic and let him check it out and get back to you! I love how it sounds and would love to drive with it, however as a daily driver, the drone just isn't practical! Ill keep you posted!

Can you just snap a picture of the underside of either rear corner? We can tell whats there with even a bad pic,

POST 17Original post

I love my Fabspeed exhaust and the sound it makes. I don't have any drone. Wonder what you have?

POST 19 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Then don't comment. I am new to the Porsche world as well as these forums.

Scott is exactly right and consistent with what I have found....Super cup for track but for me since I also drove my car on the street I swapped them out to Maxflos which was a great compromise for me. Fabspeed makes good products, you just need to find the right product to suite your needs. And while my 996 no longer has fabspeed since I went custom, I do have fabspeed exhaust and intake in my turbo S. here is my car with super cups on the track, https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q...30FF&FORM=VIRE

POST 21 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yea it sounds amazing! I think I probably have super cups but won't know until I take it to a mechanic tomorrow or the day after. Thinking about getting the Maxflos if it turns out to be super cups.

POST 22Original post

before u do anything..make sure the mufflers arent touching the metal rod that attached the bumper to the chassis.. on my 997 the maxflos were touching and it felt like a droning at all rpms inside the cabin and now i have the supercups and they are way louder but when your cruising they dont really bother

POST 23 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Is there a photo you can show me or an image I can look at to see which metal rod you are talking about? Thanks!

POST 25Original post

I have another thought about this. I purchased my 996.2 about a year ago (~60K mi.)and it had the same configuration exhaust as in Scott's first photo, maxflo's, fabspeed headers, and factory cats. I wouldn't characterize the sound as a drone, but it was very loud and raucous at all RPM's. My wife said she could hear me coming down our street a block away. At full throttle, it almost sounded like open headers. After a short time I started hearing a rattling sound at idle. Did some troubleshooting and determined one of the cats had a loose element, apparently a fairly common problem. Decided to put on the FVD X-pipe with 200 cell cats. Well, this made a huge difference in sound. Of course the rattle was gone, but the exhaust is much quieter, but with a subtle sporty sound at low RPM's. But put your foot in it, and it really wakes up, with a race car sound that is amazing. I am guessing both cats were shot causing the excessive noise. So you might have a look at your cats, as they may be the culprit.

POST 26Original post

Try X-OST Mufflers. They’re very exotic sounding. The company mainly does Ferrari. I believe you can YouTube search them for sound clips.

POST 27Original post

cssource, I'm in LA and have Maxflo's. I've been looking for something more aggressive. The two post lift in my home garage would make the swap easy if you're interested, but I would like to hear them in person first. I haven't heard a good sound clip of the super cups with the OEM cats in place.
