Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

2 month into ownership of my first P-car, stock 2003 c4s 6 speed MT with factory sports exhaust. I've tracked it once (2 days) so far, and although i didn't "catch the bug", i will probably do more in the future. I've put about 2500 miles on the car in a short period of time and plan on driving it year round (NJ/PA), though it's not a DD. Car now has 24.2K miles on it and has new LN IMS bearing, new clutch/flywheel. Enjoying every minute behind the wheel, love the sound of the SE, and plan on keeping the car for a long time. Now my question for the experienced 996 forum followers: I'm considering upgrading to a Fabspeed dual air intake and possibly also doing their ECU tune. If cost isn't a deciding factor is this a "why wouldn't you do this, you'll love the results " type of upgrade? i've read lots on this forum and really appreciate the level of knowledge offered (along with the occasional nasty comment). i'm perfectly happy with my current HP and sound, and before 2 months ago didn't even know what an ECU was, let along that they could be tuned after leaving the factory. Is there any downside other than cost? If i'm gonna go with new air intake and tune, am i making a mistake by not simultaneously upgrading headers as well? Thanks in advance.

The fabspeed unit looks nice when you open up the engine bay, but I think many will say that the stock unit is best. A lot of members go with the orange cap mod. Evoms seems to be popular as well.

POST 3Original post

You are better off using the stock air box with the cold air intake. If you install a engine bay air filter you will be sucking in hot engine bay air and you will lose power. Also confusing to the MAF to have a different air stream. Look for other upgrade options.

POST 4Original post

Wondering about this as well. Just looked at their site and it looks like $900 for the tune to get 13hp and 13ft/lbs. Anyone have first hand experience with this?

POST 5Original post

Quotes source post: 15808580

With all due respect, save the money on those things and instead, put it towards an IMS Solution upgrade. It's proven over and over, those so called "cold air intakes" don't work well on these cars. Money down the drain!

Man!... do you get any fee with each IMS solution installation? Every time that someone ask for some mod, whatever it is realted to, you always answer with the same recommendation

POST 8Original post

Don't do the fab speed tune. I wont bash fab speed all around because they do sell some good stuff but in regards to the tune.. my self and my brother would say .. run the other way. We both had to deal with them... him. Would not recommend them... him.

POST 9Original post

You can see in my signature my modifications on my 996 C2. It is a lot of money (ratio/996 value) Once you start down the slope of modifications, you are into 5 figures really fast, if you have to pay for labor. You have an aging car. Spend your money freshening up your wearable parts, like suspension and hoses. You can drop thousands just doing that. As op stated, learn to drive your car first

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

that's for all the quick responses. with respect to the ECU tune, i have no preference for fabspeed over anyone else i just happened to be looking at their site for the air intake unit. what is the general consensus regarding tuning, exclusive of who you go with? i love this forum, thx again.

POST 11Original post

After completing all of the necessary maintenance requirements, the only two worthwhile mods for the 996 are a short shifter and a Fister D exhaust modification to the stock mufflers.

I did complete suspension redo along with the lwfw and IPD plenum... I love the way my car feels. it does add though like mentioned and I did all my own work and still ran up about $15k real fast.

Touch! You got me there man. hahaha... I wish I was getting some commission cause I'd be rich by now. I just hate seeing people throw money away on dumb stuff like cosmetic upgrades or crazy performance mods but never replace the one thing that is known to take out the engine. Oh well.

Reminds me of a former coworker who was talking about getting an Ab-buster machine that he saw on TV. The guy was about 150 lbs overweight, I told him to lose the weight first and then worry about firming up his abs.

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

i respect your opinion. i did have the LN IMS bearing put in 2500 miles ago, i assume your not recommending that i replace it 6 weeks later with the IMS solution? as far as cosmetic/crazy performance mods i yield to this threads recommendations and will use my $ for basic maintenance/winter tires/etc. If i want a faster car i'd have bought a turbo, but i wanted a happy wife so i went with c4s. no complaints, lol

I have 42" waist and been hitting the gym twice a week trying to shave off the last 20 years of flubb. And you say, the AB workouts should wait!!

POST 21 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 15808894

i tracked it 5 days after IMSB was installed....threw caution to the wind, as they say. i did go 1 week after purchasing the car without replacing it and i sweated out every mile. 2003 with only 21800 miles, clearly a candidate if ever there was one. i have a side bet with my wife as to how long we go before i get my first warning light and start cursing, until then i gonna continue to "drive it like i stole it!".

POST 22Original post

Quotes source post: 15808919

Nah, go ahead and buy the Ab Buster. 20 years of flubb shouldn't take more than about 20 minutes on that machine. BTW - I'm in the same boat.

POST 23Original post

Lol I am the same weight I was 20 years ago when I graduated college. I've been working out at least 3 days a week consistently since 1995. 32" waist. I cant tell you how many times people have tried to give me fitness and diet advice. Lol It is amazing how many people think ab exercises will decrease their waist size when they are overweight. Smh

POST 24Original post

There are some threads on doing mods, there benefits and short comings. If and when you choose to start modifiying the engine, start with setting a goal. Where you want to end up after you complete your mods. Even if it takes a few years, like mine did. I researched proven mods from proven preformance/race shops and proven tuners. Our engines have been around a long time and more money than God has, thrown at them. So you don't need to reinvent the wheel. I choose Evolution Motorsports for my guidance/advise and tune. At the time, if some of you older Rennlisters know, vendors like Fabspeed sold only ecu tunes by Evoms, known as Evomsit. They came in various forms, Stage I, Stage II, etc. It varied on the amount of engine mods you had. If you increase your engines ability to bring in more air and also, send out the burnt gases, then you can bring in more fuel and ignition timing faster. The results in a much wider torque/hp band. This is limited to heads, cam lift/duration and valves. Then over the years, more and more people began to offer tuning services. Do your homework. Ask for references. BTW, I forgot to mention motor mounts, start there.

I think that as soon as spoiler opens there will enough fresh airflow that the air at the open filter will almost or very close to ambient temp. for example with spoiler closed the stock airbox will give a delta T of about 20-30degrees. Spoiler open delta T is 4-6 degrees.

POST 27Original post

Quotes source post: 15808986

That's a very interesting concept. My 04 came with an Evoms air box which has a "snorkel" that mates up with the outside vent, but the cone filter is open. Evoms told me that I'm probably getting 5 hp more than the FSI Stage II engine produces, but I've wondered about that, based on the reduced air content of engine compartment temp air. This would mean that opening the spoiler mitigates the hotter engine compartment air. Think I'll bounce this off the Evoms crew and get their take. I should add the air box does add a nice sound to the engine, so that fact alone adds value :-)
