Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

You did replace the shaft after the failure, right?
Leading evidence: 'Replace shaft' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). I've also seen some people using a set screw, but there seem to be mixed views on this one.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi guys,
I'm just in the process of putting back together a 99 M96 engine post IMS bearing failure. I got the engine ultrasonic cleaned and purchased a replacement IMS shaft.
Now, should I have the replacement IMS shaft welded? I can't find much info on this online. How is this done properly? Does the shaft need to be balanced after? Can I just do this at any good welding shop (I'm in the Bay Area).
I've also seen some people using a set screw, but there seem to be mixed views on this one.
My IMS spun the gears, wrecking the entire valve train, breaking in half one camshaft, and other assorted injuries. I bought a replacement ims and sent it to LNE to be pinned. Works great, at minimal cost. As I understand, welding isn't recommended.
Welding and pinning are standard practice here.
You did replace the shaft after the failure, right?
The IMS is actually a 4 piece component, with two of those pieces having sub- pieces. The shaft is not held together in any fashion other than a light press fit.
Yup, I got a new shaft. So do I pin all gears? From what I've seen online, people only pin one gear and it's not consistent. Some pin the bigger outer gear and some do the small gear.
