With some cars, I've used blocks of 2x to get additional height on top of the jack.
Leading evidence: 'Use blocks of 2x' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Use blocks etc' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Need some ideas for an easy way to get the rear of a 996 about 2 feet off the ground....
Any way to lift it from the center with say a 4x4 across under the jack points?
I need to get the back high enough to remove the mufflers
This is where I put my jack when raising the rear.

I probably raised the rear about 15" to get my mufflers out. I use the ESCO jack stands and had the pin in the 2nd hole if that helps at all.
With the right jack and a pair of jack stands you should be able to get the car fairly high. With some cars, I've used blocks of 2x to get additional height on top of the jack. As suggested above, you may need to alternate sides going back and forth while raising it.
You may know this, but just in case you don't: if you take off the bumper cover and the heat shields that cover the mufflers you can take off the mufflers without raising the car so high.
Oh yeah, don't forget to chock the front wheels!
Also, there are several great home garage jacking systems if you are in the mood to spend some money. I have a Maxjax MX-6 that is incredibly handy for jobs like this.
If you have stock mufflers, the car doesn't need to be raised that high. I've removed and installed them several times and never removed the bumper or wheels. I just used ramps.
The hardest part is figuring where and how to position your ratchet to get the three bracket nuts off. The first time took me a long time but now I can do each side in about 5 minutes.
If the nuts that hold the sleeve between the mufflers and cats are rusted solid, just cut them off and replace them with stainless steel nuts and bolts from the hardware store. You don't need a specific size, just any ones that are long enough.
My car is lowered a bit, so I drive it up on 3" risers that I built for this purpose. Once it's on the risers I can get my jack under the rear cross-member and jack from there. When I dropped the engine, I had 25.5 " clearance below the engine. Depending on your jack and stands, you may have to take several runs at it, using blocks etc...
So you are lifting the whole rear from the center of the rear cross member?
(I have not been under a 911 in a long time and don't remember what the setup is...)
You don't need it very high at all to get the mufflers off. You just need to take the rear wheels off. Put the rear of the car on jackstands at a reasonable height, remove the wheels, and then you can get the mufflers off through the wheelwell and/or under the rear bumper. BTDT, it's not hard. The hardest part of the job will be loosening the rusty exhaust fasteners! Use an impact gun to bust them off and then replace everything.
Alternatively you can take the bumper cover off and then you can get the mufflers off without even lifting the car, but it's so easy to jack it up and take the wheels off I don't see the point of removing the bumper cover.
Also keep in mind that if you jack the rear up 2 feet, you'll probably hit the ground with the front bumper
Careful!
+996 remove the bumper and the heat shields - its less work because its less difficult to do it that way.
5 bolts (3 on the muffler + 2 on the sleeve) per side and each slides off from the side
My 02 does not need the bumper and heat shields removed to drop the mufflers. They slide out forward and down with the wheel off. I have not tried with the wheel on but it has been said it can be done.
Not if you raise each side a little, put it on jack stands and then lift the rest of the way in the centre of the cross member. This is how I did it when the engine had to come out. BUT non of this is needed to remove the mufflers. The bumper cover and the muffler heat shields takes 10 minutes to remove and then the entire exhaust system is accessible.
Easiest way
1 use porsche jack in jack point to raise rear to get trolley jack in
2 from rear roll trolley jack under past engine to aluminium cross brace
3 get lifting head of trolley jack in the centre of the cross member and rotate the head of trolley so it cups the brace nicely , don't let any notched sides of the lifting head dig into cross member as it's aluminium and can be gouged
4 pump up trolley jack to sufficient height or even a bit more
For axle stands under jacking points and carefully lower trolley jack, you might need some wooden blocks or lifting pucks to go over axle stands on the jacking points
Make sure all is secure and level before going under car
I took my engine out like this!!
