Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

You can use practically any software but I like DashCommand - just a personal preference.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I highly recommend the OBDlink. Not the cheapest but it's of high quality. Pair it with the Torque Pro app and you're good to go.

If you have an iPhone, you'll want to go with a Wifi ODB-II reader rather than a Bluetooth reader. I have the VGate iCar-II unit. If you have an Android phone, I believe you can go with either Wifi or Bluetooth. The Vgate turns on and shuts off automatically with the car, so I leave it plugged in all the time. You can use practically any software but I like DashCommand - just a personal preference.
I got this one and have had zero issues.

I run OBD Fusion Pro for Android and it works great. Not 100% sure on what the different apps do or how they vary. I liked the trial or free version of OBD Fusion and bought it.
Expect to pay at least 50 bucks for a good quality ODB2 adapter. The cheap ones I don't think are genuine and are "knock-offs", while they will work for getting codes and clearing codes, they seem to lock up on extended road tests, or just drop out and stop communicating at times. I had bought some of the cheap ones for my sons, and step sons to keep in their car, and while they work ok, they are erratic if for extended use.

I prefer Torque Pro for the app, is easy to use, has many customizing features, has many plug-ins, and is open sourced.
+1
I forgot to mention, the better quality bluetooth ones can read the sensors at a higher rate, which is critical for some diagnostic such as O2 sensors, MAFs, etc.
I got this one and use it with Torque Pro and it is much better than I thought it would be:

Can't vouch for the wifi version of it though.
