Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My car has 115K miles on it and I bought it with no service records. I have the bumper/heat shields and mufflers off right now installing some Fister Mufflers and am curious if I should just go ahead and slap on a fresh set of plugs/coils and plug tubes/o-rings since everything is out in the open. Car runs fine but cant help but kill two birds with one stone. Is this advisable or is there a way to test condition of plugs/coils?

POST 2Original post

I just did mine and having the mufflers off makes doing it a breeze. Pull one plug and look at the condition. If they look pretty old then replace them all along with the plug tubes/o-rings. If the coil packs are not misfiring then just check them to make sure none of them has blistered. I cleaned up my valve covers and some other things while I was in there. May as well take advantage of the opportunity.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWj2jDwQ6YI&ab_channel=ChassisHawk In this video, the gentleman "backs the car out to powerwash the gunk off" after removing the coil cover. Is this advisable? I've got plenty of "gunk" on my motor and would love to clean everything up since i've got everything torn apart this far. I'll be ordering plugs this evening after I inspect the coils.

POST 5Original post

What part #s are on the coils? are they thicker 997#s and no misfire maybe leave them? I'd pull the plugs like suggested. Bank 2 was only side I removed muffler. 5 fastners. Since yours are recently removed, it shouldn't be a problem to remove them again if you need to do coils down the road....

That is a risky game. In theory you should be fine. However the car is not new any more. When built they used weather proof connectors so rain water couldn't/shouldn't hurt anything. The issue becomes age is not good for connectors and electronics. Some cars may not have an issue. Some will become your worst nightmare. I would say if your going to do it don't use a pressure washer. Just a garden hose with some distance.

I'll stick to Simple Green and a brush then

Uhhhhh yeah, where did power washing or hose come from. Just some targeted cleaning with a spray bottle, brush and rag. Clean it up a bit so touching anything doesn't result in grease on hands and crud in your eyes when you are under it. 20 year old engine + power washer/hose = check engine light for certain.
