Ive used a battery charger successfully on my 2002 - using the red tab that pops up in the fuse box and the door striker loop.

I thought about it but figured I was so close in the garage to an outlet, I'd just use the charger.

Why not hook up to the fuse panel (as you did) and use the manual trunk release button by the drivers seat bottom?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I know there are lots of threads I've found about this but they seem to suggest various things and so far none of those ideas have worked for me...
Hi all, I just finished my first winter as a Porsche owner (2002 911 Carrera) and it seems like I'm going through the right of passage now of being unable to open the hood because the battery died over the winter. I know there are lots of threads I've found about this but they seem to suggest various things and so far none of those ideas have worked for me... here's what I've tried...
1.I have a battery charger and I hook it up to the red post in the fuse box in the steering well area.
2. When i press and hold the button on the key fob or press the trunk release button, I hear a couple clicks but nothing opens. I've tried applying pressure pulling the hood up at the same time but no luck either.
3. At first the wheel was locked, so I put the key in and jiggled the wheel back and forth a bit to unlock it. I've tried doing step 2 with the key in the ignition, in the ignition with it turned, and in the door. I'm unclear which I should be doing but I've read all three.
4. I've read there is a manual wire sometimes that I can access through the bumper or wheel well on the passenger side... I've looked for it and I can't find it by site. I'm unclear where I need to be looking, if I have to take a bumper or wheel off, etc.
Wondering if there is anything else I can do w/ the jumper route (step 2) to make this work before spending time searching for the manual release cable? If there are no options, then tips for finding that release wire would be greatly appreciated, as the posts I've read have been a bit inconsistent as to where its at.
Also wondering if the battery would (should) eventually charge if I left the charger on the fuse panel area? As soon as I unplug it, I can no longer hear clicks when pressing the button. The charger is kinda old so maybe I should look for a different charger to borrow before I just assume that its the battery.
portable jump starter on the fuse pin or through the cigarette lighter works for me. I never tried a charger, but I assume that would not work.
Borrow a jumper. Even one of those little ones is enough to get the trunk open. I have one like This. Cord is barely long enough.

Hey hey, my charger had a jump start mode which I figured would be as good as one of those actual jump starter packs but I went ahead and tried the one I keep in my other vehicle and the hood opened right up. Wish I'd just done that first... I thought about it but figured I was so close in the garage to an outlet, I'd just use the charger. Doh! Thanks!
Yes, however, on the 996.2 the rear lid is electronically actuated too - so you need to power it to open it. Unless your emergency pull is located in a handy position.

A few tips and products for you guys to look into...
1-First thing is that a charger typically does not have enough Amps/Current to activate that Frunk switch... you do need a jump Starter or something with a solid 12v and capable of about 12Amps... So that is why a charger usually won't work well as they are usually just a lower current of around 4-5 amps or even less... and until they charge your battery they won't provide the power/current needed to make the cars' switches work.
2-Sometimes if the frunk won't open from using the switch by the seat.... you should also try your keyfob... sometimes that will make it work compared to the frunk switch itself.
3- A $34 dollar JUMP-START should not be in a Porsche or most any other car.... there is no WAY to make a quality Jump-Starter that is claimed 20,000mAh for $34.00 dollars. First it's actually probably only 6000 real mAh at that price, secondly those clamps don't have any built in protections and third, for $34 dollar you're getting a B-Grade Lithium Cell without a doubt, and those can be very volatile. I'm saying this because we were one of the first companies to introduce this product to the market back in 2013, and we were rated by Consumer Reports as the "Best Rated Jump Starter" for our XP-10 model. So I'm not just trying to blow some smoke. The options we provide are the
Antigravity Batteries MICRO-START JUMP STARTERS
As for some other products we developed that can be very useful...
1- We developed the first Lithium-Ion Battery with WIRELESS Built-In Jump Starting. So that means if you ever leave your lights on or the keys in the ignition or whatever and the battery dies. You simply press the Keyfob that comes with the battery and start the car back up and drive away. Or in the original posters case you can actually just press the key fob which energizes the car again and open the frunk... then recharge with a charger if you want... 911 Size HERE>>>>

2- We also developed our Battery Tracker product and App that will monitor your battery voltage and report it to your phone... you get real time voltage data and 31 day Historical data as well as a Charging and Starting Test in the App. It also sends alerts to your phone if your battery is getting low. So you don't even have to go to your car to check the voltage... just look at the app and if you walk within 30ft of the car all the current and historical data is transferred to your phone. >>>>

3- I ran into this problem of not being able to open the frunk in my Car... I didn't like the idea of having to go under the steering wheel to energize the car so the swtich would work......So I made this long wire harness that works with the Mini Jump Starters. You route it under the corner of your hood. Then when needed you pull it out and plug in your mini-jump starter into it and energize your car so you can open the frunk...then your never get stuck without being able to open your frunk. You can also use it to jump start your car instead of opening your frunk.
