Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So I have my indy doing a IMS Solution for me. Only thing is he has dropped the engine. He tells me that it was needed because it is a 4S and an automatic. Anyway, while it's out, I have him doing: Plugs Coil packs Coolant reservoir Accessory belt The aos and water pump are new. The rms is also being done. I have 100% confidence in this guy.. but I was surprised at the engine drop. Comments??

POST 3Original post

I cant imagine an engine drop taking an experienced tech too much time. Sure does make working on the motor alot easier too

POST 4Original post

I've got mine going in this week. IMS, RMS, Clutch, AOS and I am sure some of the other things you mentioned. Might as well just bang it all out and enjoy the car with some peace of mind. Next will most likely be a suspension refresh.

POST 5Original post

Ive been pricing the IMS work from three different shops and they all told me you have to drop the engine if it is an automatic. Im also thinking of doing a few maintenance things while the engine is out. Did you think about replacing the AOS while the engine is out? The part itself is only $100 but I understand the labor costs are significant if the engine is in the car. Others know more than me...its just what I have read.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 15819845

My AOS is new. The place I bought the car from replaced it just before purchase. Actually kinda funny, the old one went while on the test drive. If it wasn't new, I would definitely have replaced it. Hell, I'm even replacing the coolant tank as I hear they are damn near impossible to replace on a automatic without dropping the engine.

POST 7Original post

Yep, it's an engine out procedure on a Tip. I'm getting ready to have my LNE dual row IMSB replaced after 7 years as a precaution. I'll have them do the AOS too, which is also an engine out deal for my car.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Indy is having a hard time finding a Tiptronic shifter cable (@ close to $350!). Anyone have just they end they would be willing to part with?

POST 9Original post

Its listed here as a separate part: http://www.autoatlanta.com/porsche-p...section=701-01 . I ran into the same problem several years ago & rather than waiting for availability, made a permanent repair of the rubber part with window-weld urethane.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 15823363

Unfortunately it's too flipping late. The cable assembly will be in within a day or 2. I don't think he would be willing to use anything other than an OEM or porsche part.

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 15819852

That's how I got a brand new battery for mine before purchase. The Indy where I got the pre-purchase done tried to charge the old battery for hours and couldn't get it to hold enough of a charge to start the engine.

POST 12Original post

Quotes source post: 15819516

Yes, I've done IMS in the car but if I have to do other work, especially the AOS and water pump it's easier just to drop the engine. I'd say doing the trans removal, pulling the AC pump etc you're already 80% of the way to dropping the engine. If I'm dumping the coolant it's just easier to drop the engine/trans.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well, it's getting close. I stopped by there today to take a look. My indy was able to find the the end piece for the shifter cable ($35 vs $250+). He also told me that the expansion tank was only $175. He may have been mistaken but he says it is coming right from Porsche. He told me that realistically there are only a few guys in the area that do this kind of work on Porsche cars on a regular basis ( https://apexautowerks.com/ ). He seems to think that the other shops are in cahoots (great word). He said that he simply does not rip off his customers, Aside from this taking WAY TOO long, I trust this indy 110% and would recommend him (if you can schedule your work better then mine). In all, he is doing: IMS Solution (the single row that came out had the slightest play but no cruchyness) RMS Coil packs Plugs Expansion tank Front rubber drive shaft coupler Automatic shifter cable end Accessory belt Reconnecting XLF option vacuum lines. They were disconnected?? Replacing some missing flange bolts that weren't put back in when the AOS was done Reconnecting at least one vacuum line that was just hanging there I also asked about other bolt on goodies for more horses. He laughed at the IPD Plenum as adding any more HP. He should know, he has a Mustang dyno that he has tested it on. His only suggestion was a tune and removing the cats and adding X-pipes for an added 15-20 hp. Not something I would do at this point.

POST 14Original post

Shouldn't leave the brake calipers hanging like that. Should be supported with coat hangers or zip ties to keep the tension off the brake lines.

POST 15Original post

Quotes source post: 15826124

^^My thought exactly!!! Unless he's replacing the brake flex lines too...

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 15826135

Well, hanging them will likely increase the odds of them being replaced...

POST 17Original post

Get it all out of the way in one stop. Looking good. One question: is your indy following any of the pre-qualification that FSI recommend prior to the installation of the Solution? E.g. inspecting the bores, sump and oil filter?

POST 18Original post

Why did he need to discombobulate the rear suspension like that just to remove the engine?

POST 19 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 15826378

I know he did deviation and a few other things, including collecting oil. I'll ask about the sump.

POST 20 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have no idea...

POST 21 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 15826378

Just confirmed with indy. Pan was removed and all was inspected before resealing.

POST 22 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

BTW, quoted price was $3,500 before extras like plugs / coils / etc. Included were all fluids, IMS and RMS. I even gave him 2 gallons of uncut coolant, which he said he would deduct. I'll give a wrap up when he is done tomorrow. Overall so far I would recommend John. PS - I even saw a supercharged 996 he did 8 years ago. Yikes!

POST 24Original post

As others have said, get those calipers supported with some zip ties. It hurts to look at them like that.

POST 25 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 15826577

AOS and water pump are new.

POST 26Original post

Quotes source post: 15826454

That's great. Hope they cut open the oil filter and inspected that, as well. Looks like they're doing a good job. Now you need to have them replace the rear brake hoses....

POST 27 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 15826628

Sigh... I just sent him a note asking him to support them before he installs anything else, fearing that a good jolt could damage the lines. His response just now: They arent hanging on the lines. If you looked, you would have seen that I had a second black wire holding the weight. He must be getting tired of me. Lol

POST 31Original post

Quotes source post: 15826631

He must be very patient if it were me I know what I would be telling you to do.

POST 32 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 15829656

I don't think it's his patience that matters here. I have been WAY MORE than patient with him. I stopped by there again this morning. He showed me that the weight of the caliper is not on the brake line. I did say that I always support the caliper with a hook whenever I remove them. He is the expert so I wasn't going to bust his chops more than my first text. That being said, it is my car. Anyway, I am starting to get sick to my stomach though. As of now, he has had the car for 3 1/2 weeks. I was pissed that he didn't do anything to it for the first two weeks, it basically just sat there. And when he said it wouldn't be done today because of a newly found 'nicked' coolant line, i sank to a new low. Dramatic I know but he has had my 'new to me' car longer than I have. Anyway, he is promising tomorrow. I suppose the silver lining is that nothing bad could have happened if I wasn't driving it.

POST 33 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

BTW - He only charged $185 for the genuine Porsche coolant expansion tank . Am I losing it or have users said that it should be well over $300??

POST 34Original post

Yeah when I had my IMS done last year he had the car for just over 3 weeks also. IN AUGUST!!! So I feel for ya'

POST 35Original post

Quotes source post: 15829703

Mk II coolant tanks are MUCH cheaper than Mk I's. They are $138 from Sunset porsche. $180 is standard retail price, which a shop will charge normally.

POST 36Original post

Up until recently Ive always used electric fence wire to hold up calipers. I recently bought a large hook from Michaels. ($3.99) It looks similar to the ones sold elsewhere for $20+. Glad I went to Michaels that day with my wife. I went back a few days later and bought a few more. I have 4 for myself, 2 for the Car Ministry, and I got 2 for my son. Those hooks are awesome!

POST 37Original post

Relax. An OE Porsche coolant expansion tank for 2001-2005 at Pelicans is $151 plus shipping. $637 Porsche for a 99-2000 coolant tank. At least the engine is back in car. You want him to be slow and careful. https://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog...pg4.htm#item11

POST 38 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 15829812

Ormond Beach ... ? That is where I bought the car from. Ormond Fine Imports. lol Anyway, I thought the tank was much more expensive. Glad to hear he is charging normal prices (he got it direct from a Porsche dealership).

POST 39 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Picked up my car Friday. Got an hour into driving and got a cel (P0171 and P0174). Called the indy and he said it sounded like a vacuum line came loose. Started to drive it over to the shop and my water temp fluctuated from 0 to 180, throwing a P0116 error. I get to the shop and the rear trunk release didn't work. He had to use the pull cable to open it up. He found the airbox clamps were not tight and figured that was the problem for 171 and 174. Trunk release started working. Drove off and again 171 and 174. Also same problems with 116 and the temp gauge reading 0 degrees. I believe 171 and 174 will be fixed with a smoke test and finding the vacuum leak. What about the 116 (zero temp) and rear release. Indy said he thought it might be a air pocket but I doubt it...

POST 40Original post

Your indy doesn't test drive the car before calling to have it picked up?

POST 41 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 15835251

It was test driven. These things appeared after an hour of driving.

POST 42Original post

This is a perfect example of guys doing all this PM work to screw up a perfectly fine car!

POST 43 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 15840011

The PM was for the IMS, which is not exactly a haphazard decision. But I do agree that sometimes doing work like this can cause issues with an otherwise healthy car.

POST 44Original post

Quotes source post: 15840011

Sorry - but this is a total bullsh!t post! The car is 15 years old and has 73,000 miles on it. He'd really be screwing up if he didn't perform appropriate PM. Installing the IMS Solution is probably one of the best things to do on these cars to buy peace of mind. And to do that, the engine should come out. To not take care of the other things - while in there - would be stupid.
