Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well, after trying to make sense of the records of the cars history I have come to the conclusion they may have been falsified or mid represented. Thus my local Indy who has a great reputation and only works on German cars is going to do some major work. The car has 103k miles. Drop the sump see what’s in there. check the cylinders for scoring AOS Rear Main Seal though the clutch seems good...it will likely get replaced since he is in there. IMS solution. what else should I do or check since it will be out, short of cracking the block. chain tensioner? spark plug tubes? i figure I want to take advantage of the ease of access and take advantage of the labor cost of dropping the engine anything to check on the transmission? i appreciate the advice. ——————————————- advice given waterpump check coils for cracks cam deviation

POST 2Original post

The water pump is a five minute job with the engine out. It's doable but much more difficult with the engine in the car. If you don't know how old the water pump is I would change it along with the other stuff you mentioned. Put in a new low temp thermostat at the same time. The plugs and tubes are a DIY job, albeit a fiddly one. If you're not inclined to medium DIY jobs, have them change the plugs and tubes. You didn't mention the year, but only MK-I cars have the plastic tubes. Have them check the ignition coils for cracks.

POST 3Original post

If your talking spark plug tubes then we must be talking about a 5 chain engine. If so, then be sure to check cam deviations. If they are greater than 4 degrees (usually negative and usually bank 1 is worse) then Variocam actuator pads should be on your list. You can scroll through my thread on taking the engine out to get some ideas: https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...1129109&page=1

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Should I do the tubes myself?

POST 5Original post

How much do you like working on the car? I've done the plugs and tubes twice. The first time took a long time, the second time just a couple of hours. I suggest removing the mufflers and wheels to make the job easier. If it's done with the engine out, it's 5 or 10 minutes.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I wonder if he will let me go to the shop and work on it while it’s out...lol. I don’t mind doing the work, but if it’s a 5 min job from the Indy I might just have him do it.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

UI am using German Auto Care in The Woodlands. He was recommended. Only works on German cars. Fair price and honest How would I price it? I guess taking it to CarMax or Texas Direct Autos and getting an offer. They can then do with it as they wish.

POST 9Original post

Do not take it to CarMax or some other auto place to dump it. Karma is real and it is a bitch. Probably former owner knew something was wrong as well. A roller with a bad engine will get $5K at best. Have your guy drop the sump plate and see what is in there. Has the IMS bearing been touched? If the engine is out I would have him pull the IMS cover and inspect the bearing. I know it amounts to money, but some diagnostics first will help pinpoint the problem.

POST 10Original post

I don't know that I agree about not selling it to Carmax or other wholesale type dealer. They are giving you a price that accounts for the unknowns, which is why it will almost certainly still hurt quite a bit. It's a very different situation from a private party sale where you would have to intentionally misrepresent the car or its maintenance history. Carmax won't even ask.

POST 11Original post

I am confused. You mentioned having major engine out maintenance then suddenly taking r to CarMax. Was there a post that was deleted/edited?

POST 12Original post

I wasnt following this thread closely, but Ive seen a bunch of cars sell when the cost to repair at a shop is too high to swallow. Ive purchased a few of them, since my time plus discounted parts makes it a much more economical proposition. Again, not sure that is what happened here, but it may not be anything nefarious.

POST 13Original post

Yes, He deleted an entire portion of his post #8 about metal shavings found on his magnetic plug and metal shavings in the oil filter. Also said the indy recommended getting rid of the car.

POST 14Original post

Quotes source post: 15835178

Thats kind of sketchy. Not cool.

POST 15Original post

Since he was trolling, at least do a solid and post the VIN so nobody here buys it. Even after it is sold will help with any rennfax later if the car is found for sale.

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Sorry, nothing nefarious intended. I just felt like I was wallowing and feeling sorry for myself and deleted my post. I am not sure what I will do. If I take it to a carmax I will lose a ton. Do I don’t want to sell it and not disclose it. I am thinking I should replace the IMS. Then drive it for 500 miles and check the oil again. Suggestions? Trying to figure out how to post a pic. There were no big pieces just hair like shavings.

POST 18Original post

Download pic on your computer and then click^ the picture link above...It's easy! Or, just copy and paste, doesn't always work for me though.

POST 19 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

If any one has a sig other you can understand the feeling when you share the news from the mechanic. I got a load of I told you so! So I was down in the dumps about it all. No, I will not, pass it on to someone else without disclosure. I would feel wrong about that. so my question is what to do now. Bill, I will try to post the pic later. ok, what are the odds that is coming from the IMS? If I replace it and I change the oil again after some time and there are no,shavings then I know that was the cause. But what about the damage the pieces did in the engine? What if I replace the IMS and there are still shavings? But I am committed at this point. I have seen the help you guys have given other posters. I will take suggestions and advice. thanks again.
