Another fix is to use some Permatex sealant on the cover, I used copper on mine.

But, my cam cover also leaked and just used the sealant that the oil pan uses.....

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
23 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

My mechanic fixed it in less then 30 minutes and bye bye leak...
After four years without a drip on the floor I found one after driving to the dry cleaners (sigh...)
I found that the circular part is the oil pump but I'm having a tough time identifying the housing it's in. Because of that I'm hesitant about what I've diagnosed the part that is leaking is..... which I believe is the temp sensor: 996 606 495 01
Anyone else have an internet dignosis for this leak? Thanks in advance! The red arrow is pointing to the sending unit.
My take on this is:
Your AOS has gone bad and is blowing oil out the breather vent that is located kind of under the A/C compressor. This oil is running your scavenge pump. The oil is coming from above the variocam solenoid. Mine was doing this until I replaced my AOS.

Yes, there is a breather line that runs from the AOS, under the intake tubes to a vent near the A/C compressor. Look around in that area, and I think you will find your leak.

I have had the same problem with my 2000 996....
The line (no4) was leaking at the AOS jonction.
My mechanic fixed it in less then 30 minutes and bye bye leak...
Where do you leave...near Montreal or Laval...do you know VAG motorsport...they knows Porsche car perfectly and they will fix it for you for a very good price.
Bonne chance
Robert
The arrow you have drawn is pointing to the cam advances mechanism. These will commonly leak some oil. Part #20 in the diagram on post #2 is the cover/seal for this mechanism. You can easily replace this part, you will have to undo the connector for the electrical lead to get the cover off. Another fix is to use some Permatex sealant on the cover, I used copper on mine. There is a seal on the inside of the hole on the cover. Take a bit of sealant and put it on this seal and re-install it. This will usually stop any leak at the cover.
If it is the AOS tube there will be lots of oil above the cover. This should help tell if it is the AOS tube or the cam advance cover that is leaking.
Thanks! I haven't lived in Montreal (Baie D'urfe) for a LONG time... (1990?) My wife wants to go again since she said there were so many shoe stores....
I'll be looking at this today. I might need the new AOS since I've been getting a squeal too.
Yeah, I think I have two leaks. The cam advance seal should be one of them since the area looks a lot cleaner, like its pushing oil out.
But at the same time the oil is above it that looks like a light leak which gets caked onto the engine.
Doug and I went round and round on that cam solenoid thing when I did mine. I changed them with his help but I kept thinking the actual leak was coming from the "wires" AKA thru the solenoid. He sent me some pictures of the assy all taken apart and I was convinced there was no way for oil to come thru the solenoid... i have since changed my mind and think that they can be the source or seepage.
my changing of the solenoid seals

but it did not completely solve my problem. Turned out the new (old) owner found the bellows was leaking... but shortly after the cam actuator stopped working on that side...I still think what I saw was the begining of the end for the solenoid - Doug I cant believe you missed the 4-6 back on ebay for $100 !!! - glad you got the 1-3 though.... who got the 4-6...anyone we know?
Yeah, I need to track the upper leak down. Thanks for the input.
Years ago the company gave me a Chevy Colorado (BIGGEST POS EVER) and I had to sell my Tacoma (BIGGESTS AWESOMENESS TRUCK EVER) The Coolant sensor on the Colorado leaked internally and the coolant fed into the computer through the wiring from the sensor and shorted the computer....
Where are you guys getting that PET software?
And i looked into it and saw that the breather valve is spitting out oil which I'm assuming means that the valve isn't working along with the AOS. Maybe that's why I could hear the squeal on the right side. It was coming from that valve.....
Here's a photo from the top with the air box out, between the coolant lines.....
Where is the photo, we all love pics!!
Ed - Yea I can't believe that I missed the 4-6. I was following both auctions. On the 1-3 I accidentally bid $1,000, but go it for $100. Thank goodness that eBay prevents stupid mistakes by only bidding enough to buy the item. For the 4-6 I had $100 in and meant to increase it to $125 and some how entered $1.25. I think it went for about $110. Not sure who the buyer was but we were both bidding on both items.
Doug you ever looked into Bidnapper (dot com) the site bids for you at the last second and if you set it up to bid and change your mind you can cancel it like you never bid.. and if you get "outbid" prior to the service bidding it sends you a notice to increase your bid... I like it because like the TV ad for the cooking thing "set it and forget it" you can bid on 5 of the same things and tell it to cancel the others if you win one too... pretty cool - I pay per win 9there is also monthly and other options... but if I dont win I dont pay.. i buy 10 or 20 "wins" for like $20 then I have all the time in the world to use them...
Ed.. yea, thats a leak alright - looks like you have some work to do - AOS time?
hey i checked the PET site the other day and the one I use is not working so I cannot point you in the right dirrection. I downloaded them after one site dropped off a while ago. When I "re-found" them I downloaded so I dont have to rely on the websites (plus they pop up quicker) i have all the sevice manuals for the 996 and PET, the service manual for the 86' and PET - all free...but like I said save them if you find them, its worth it and sometimes those sites get removed
Yep that's the connector/vent. The vent is the symptom, not the problem. Your AOS is bad and blowing oil out that vent. That vent pops apart for cleaning. Mine was doing the same thing until I replaced the AOS. I just checked my vent and after 10K miles it's still dry.

+1.... changed my AOS and no more over pressure and no more leak. But, my cam cover also leaked and just used the sealant that the oil pan uses..... now its all dry down there. Nice!
