I want both really (I know, there are turbo cabs out there, but later years and too much $), but I know that I would only use the full power of the turbo rarely, and that the price & repair/maintenance difference can be quite significant.
Leading evidence: 'Repair /maintenance difference can be quite significant' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Repair /maintenance difference can be quite significant' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. I test drove the car you ended up buying from Media, IIRC.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi,
I sold my 99 Aero not too long ago, and am now looking at Cabs. I've been holding out for an MKII, but saw a really nice 00 Cab. Can anyone refresh me on the differences between 99 and 00? From memory, I recall only the following difference:
Cable vs. E-throttle (E-throttle makes conversion to a 3.6 a bit easier, but who knows if I'd ever have to go to such trouble).
Anything else? Any improvements from 99 to 00? When did they go to the glass back window - was that MKII?
Thanks,
Todd
About 1 year.
Seriously though......Correct on e-gas. Also, IIRC the case did not suffer from the manufacturing defects that have been found in the 99's.
Other than that, a couple aesthetics like better interior materials, clear headlights.
I'm sure by the end of this thread there will be a comprehensive list
Thanks Dell. What does "IIRC" mean (sorry, I am thick).
Interesting point on the orange-at-the-bottom headlights vs. clear. Did not know that was the year of the switch.
When you say better interior materials, do you just mean the plastic, or do you mean the leather? I assume still no cup holders in 2000?
I've seen you on the 996 turbo site too, as I keep swinging back between (1) "I want the pin-you-back in the seat turbo" and (2) I want a cab non-turbo. I want both really (I know, there are turbo cabs out there, but later years and too much $), but I know that I would only use the full power of the turbo rarely, and that the price & repair/maintenance difference can be quite significant. I can pick up a 996 cab closer to the low $20's, vs. a turbo for at least double. Decisions, decisions.
Hey Todd,
Glad to see that you still have the porsche bug. Sorry you sold your aero.
Have I been feeding your desire for another P-car as I blast past the woodside farm creamery while you are eating ice cream?
as Dell stated, there were some internal changes to parts (superseeded) due to initial problems. There have been reported more issues with the 99' than the later years though the actual truth to those statement may never be known.
fact of the matter is both can be great and either can be trouble...its also true with almost any year car....name a year that has not had its fair share of great cars..... or troubled ones. Its the way it is.
My 99' is just rolling 120k miles - it is in for some service work right now but has been an otherwise bullet proof car.
Early '99s had amber front signals and amber rears, later in the year they were changed to clear. Other subtilites were addressed mid year that makes the late '99s a better car. The '99s had the basketball grain vinyl, which was absent on the full leather models. '99 has mechanical throttle, LSD available.
yea, but the savings in weight of 4lbs is worth the slight loss of power
(BTW I dont know if its 4 lbs lighter, I am just arguing for the sake of arguing
)
Hey Jim,
I remember you! At least talking to you on this forum. I test drove the car you ended up buying from Media, IIRC. I sold my Aero and then it took about 3 months for me to fully regret it. Loved it. But I switched jobs, bought a new house in Chadds Ford, and was in the middle of a big recession all within a short time period. I therefore felt the insecure need to hoard up some cash - you know, in order to survive the then-impending end of the world. Well, the world has not ended, and the cash is still sitting there earning 0.0000002%. I think prices have even gone up a bit since the end of last year on the 996's.
Just not exactly sure what I really want yet, not even the color (since I've done the reds and blacks, etc.). If I had unlimited funds, it would simply be a Turbo Cab (CPO'd!). I have almost as much fun with the hunt as I do owning the car... (although I should have kept that darned Black Factory Aero!).
I hear ya. the end of the world isn't coming until 2012
.
The local dealer in Newark has quite a few 996 coupes for sale. Unfortunately they are listed at some of the highest prices I have ever seen. Only a "drive by and buy" consumer would pay anywhere near what they are asking.
Yes, you did drive the car I now own. It has been great. best car I have ever purchased.
I have had the RMS replaced under CPO and I had them throw a new clutch in there while they were at it. Other than that, I have just been enjoying the hell out of this car.
Good luck with your hunt for a new P-car.
Ahh, I remember a big draw to your car when it was for sale was that it still had CPO warranty remaining. I guess that paid off for you.
My MB E500 just came out of warranty, and now needs new front struts (Airmatic = Big $$'s). Dealer wanted $3500 to replace two struts. Guess who will be wrenching on them this weekend??? Found rebuilt struts with lifetime warranty (and good reputation) in Florida. Arrived today. Not quite like working on a P-car, but I still like to wrench myself and save when I can...
Hmmm, you may see my '99 cab in the Woodside Farm Creamery parking lot, as I sit at the picnic benches eating "motor oil" ice cream (of course). My favorite!
What a small world. I've seen a few different 911's at Woodside.
The only ice cream place left where you can get any ice cream and any toppings, all thrown in a cup or cone, and then you just pay one fixed rate based on weight. Then go outside and look at the animals. They are serving Woodside Ice Cream at many of the nice restaurants in Delaware now.
To keep this Porsche related - that is one of the reasons I've always liked the 911 over the Cayman, Boxster, even Ferarri's etc - the back seat allows me to take the whole family out for ice cream.
2002 cabriolets have the glass rear windows. But at least one supplier (
www.GAHH.com
) offers replacement tops for 1999-2001 with plastic and/or glass window. If you order the glass window version, there's an additional wire harness assembly available for wiring in the heater element.

So would you/should you stay away from an early 99 with the amber lights front/rear?
cable vs. e-throttle really noticeable?
I know there were lots of little developments from 99 to 2002. Is there a weight advantage to a 99/early 99?
I also read that sometime in '99 (which might refer to the MY00 cars), that the Porsche side impact protection system was added (POSIPS) .. or a similar acronym copied from Volvo SIPS.
It would seem like eliminating mechanical linkages, and all of the associated wiring/cables associated with cable throttle, idle air stabilizer/hoses as well as cruise control system with the drive by wire of the 00+ cars would save weight, not increase it. If weight increased due to other factors, it'd take a fair amount of weight to offset the 4hp gain. Personally, I'd be drawn to drive by wire because it's a much more elegant set up.
Also the issue of TC (Traction Control) in the 99 vs PSM in '00s. TC is what allows '99s to have LSD. Lights are plug and play from a newer model if you don't like the yellow blinker.
