The -40F IAT is definitely a default number,(like it is disconnected).

I swapped a 3.2 longblock into a Boxster that had a 2.7, with all the 2.7 injectors, intake, exhaust, MAF, DME, ect.(most of which are the same anyway) and it ran perfect, infact ran so good that I am partially believing the 2.7 DME programming may be a "hot tune set-up" for a 3.2.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So long story, but had to replace my engine. Got a RND engine in there now. Went to crank it up, and it came right to life but will not idle. Have to use the pedal to keep it going. So I stopped cranking it, and began to read my values with the durametric. So intake temp is reading -40F and Air mass is saying 100kg/hr. So seems like a bad MAF for me. Just want to confirm that i can not clean this puppy and get it back to life. The car was running great prior to my disaster, but it died by spitting coolant out the exhaust. I can run at above 2000 rpms, but will just die lower than that.
thanks for the help
???? I suppose you are getting code p0102? The -40F IAT is definitely a default number,(like it is disconnected). Maybe try disconnecting MAF to send the DME into backup map (Alfa-N) to see how it performs? What is your MAF voltage?
Yes I did get that code, checked the integrity of the plug, will look at it tomorrow. Will a non-functional MAF cause the car to start and die. I thought it was a bit more important at higher RPMs. Again, I am not trying to run the new rebuilt engine when I don't have things working, so I am trying to get all the things I can control with just the power on to align prior to pushing the engine.
thanks for the help, will get more info tomorrow. I hope. I need to find what all the live values men on the durmetric app/
it is a 99 so drive by analog cable. No need for calibration. My hot MAF volts are 1.0 and my air mass is 100kg/h so I guess that is a good correlation. Also my coolant temp is 18.8c my ambient temp is 18.8c but my Intake temp is 25.5, so a bit of a discrepancy. I confirmed the plug was seated well, and pulled and reset. I can drop some deoxit on there as well, that will prob not hurt. I will check the pins later today when I get home from work to ensure I got the reference 5 volts.
reading a bit more, it seems that 1.0 volts is a good reading wit ignition on.....
does anyone know of a good resource for interpreting the values I get from the live stream
The MAF voltage should be about 1.0v with key ON engine OFF and ~1.3v at idle (fully warmed up with a/c off), 15-18kg/hr. Have you cleaned the idle stabilizer?
What is odd is at 1.0v, the MAF should read 0 kg/hr. There are two MAF values reported by Durametric and you should look at the one that says MAF (Hot film).
yea the hot film is the one giving the volts and that one checks out. this thing is weird....... but really appreciate the multiple brains on this one. The other piece of the puzzle is this is a later model boxer engine 3.2 going into my 996. the old engine blew and I was able to get this new one from RND during their clearance. But the block should not effect the MAF readings. I did find out my oil temp sensor is probably different. going to continue to fun....
yes i am using the 996 intake and Dme should be fine. may have to put smaller injectors in. but this probably is my issue. will have to see if too rich..
Are you using the 996.1 injectors? If using 996.1 injectors ,MAF, DME, Intake, exhaust, ect. you should at least crank and idle.
Here are some nominal values for the 99 996.1 3.4 engine for the Porsche Shop Manual. One page is not clear(page 22)
, my file may be damaged. it is pages 21-23 of section 01 of the MKI Shop manual.
I know you said you were using a the newer 3.2 engine, are you using the 996 3.4 wiring harness? The newer style vario cam will be problem for you, I don't know of a successful work-around . The only thing I know that will work is a complete conversion over to a DME 7.8 system, or a stand alone system , I don't know of any piggy-back hardware that will make newer vario cam compatible. If you come up with something please share...
thanks for the info, this is awesome. Yes I am just finding out that the various cam is something that was not disclosed. to me. I guess that is going to mean new acc pedal, new throttle body, new dme.. new harness. DANG
turning into a big nightmare. Guess the folks at RND did not understand that I had a 99. Oh well. learned a lot about variocam. Lucily the boxer 3.2 never had the variocam + as far as I can tell. I am fairly sure my engine does have a regular Variocam.
here are the specs. I am thinking a can get a MSD rpm activation switch and switch the cam on and off that way. seems like the cams are deactivated at idle and at high rpms. So I will need the dual RMP switch. will not be ideal but may get me what I need.
Functioning
When the ignition is switched on, the electromagnetic valves of the camshaft adjusters are supplied with positive potential. If the engine is started, the control unit applies ground to terminal 25 (camshaft adjuster for cylinder line 4 - 6) and to terminal 52 (camshaft adjuster for cylinder line 1 - 3) if the following conditions are fulfilled (VarioCam activated);
1 - Engine oil temperature between -3C and 133C
2 - Engine speed > 1,300 rpm
3 - Throttle opening > 5%
or
1 - Engine oil temperature > 133C
2 - Engine speed > 1,480 rpm
3 - Throttle opening > 3.9%
The ground potential is deactivated by the
DME
control unit (VarioCam deactivated) if:
Engine speed > 5,120 rpm"
I think what you quoted is for the 5-chain variocam ON/OFF type but what the 3.2 has is the 3-chain vane type like Porschetech3 said and that is continuously variable. Two different mechanisms despite the same name.
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...-a-primer.html
Check your engine number to see actually which engine you have. M96.21 is 5 chain 3.2, M96.24 is a 3 chain 3.2
M96/21 variocam is either on or off like what you have above. solenoid on/off (The 996.1 DME 5.2.2 will work with this)
M96/24 variocam is modulated continuously varied with more advance capability and solenoid is PWM. ( requires DME 7.8 or some piggy-back controller)
You may be able to rig up something to get it to perform OK, but probably not well enough to keep from setting cam advance codes..but kodo's if you can make it drivable..
not sure that is correct. the various cam plus did not come into effect until 2006 or so and was never on the 3.2 boxer engine. But I found another reference that the newer various cam was used in MY2003 onwards. then I am screwed.... Will have to look at the parts diagrams

Ok just conformed with RND my new engine is a M96/21 and it should work with my 996. it is considered mechanically comparable. the engine is for a 2000-2003 Boxster S. Everything hooked up identically electronically and checked the parts diagram, so should be the same, and my DME should operate the cams. Will double check with the Durametric software that I can actuate the cam solenoids
I really appreciate the help with all of this. Now just have to get to idle. dropped the engine last night. Going to smoke test it for leaks. I think I beat the 2003 window though... Have to find out what what my DME can do..
Well RND is wrong on the years !!
M96/21 3.2 was years 2000, 2001, 2002 (5 chain) 986s
M96/24 3.2 was years 2003, 2004 (3 chain) 986s
M96/26 3.2 was years 2005, 2006 (3 chain) 987s
Luckily for you that you have the M96/21 , it is completely compatible with your DME5.2.2 and is good to go !!
Porschetech3 and Ahsai thank you so much for the help. Now it is just a matter of getting the adaptation to come into spec. Is there a way to make sure any old data is out of the DME
Clearing fault codes, or disconnecting the battery for 10min will reset adaptions. I really don't think adaptions are your issue, but definitely should be done. Usually adaptions being off will make it idle rough or stall, but it should not take 2000rpms to keep it running. I think you have a massive leak somewhere..
Yea that also crossed my mind. I ordered a smoker which will be here today but my intake cone adaptor will not get here until monday. Pulling the engine is going to allow me to see what I missed. I am going to have to plug up the brake boaster hole. Also I removed the throttle body but did not replace that gasket, and I think that is my issue. I can also clean and RnR the ICV as well this weekend. Just taking a huge sigh of relief to know the engine will work. I was assuming the worst.
the only other things I saw was my Oil temp was reading -40 so going to throw my old sensor back in. My MAF air flow showed 100kg/hr but did show 1V on the hot wire. The intake temp was about 6*c over the engine coolant temp. Finally my Exhaust Temp did not read as well. Not sure if I have a sensor for that though.
I really do appreciate the tables you gave me with the normal values. Huge help
