Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Good Afternoon all, After many years of lusting I am about to (maybe) join the Porsche ownership club. I am looking at buying a 996.2 from 2002 with 30k miles, base carrera. The car was a Minnesota car its whole life but considering the low mileage I assume it was not daily driven or has not seen the snow. I have obtained some undercarriage photos from the selling party and am not sure what I am looking at. There are some parts that look brown-ish but is it rust? Not sure, I'd love your opinion. This Thursday the car will be brought to a Porsche dealership for a full PPI but would prefer to rull out the rust before spending $350 on an inspection. Photos are here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/KCUW12fXE1uuEuD4A Thank you for your help!

POST 3Original post

I could not really see any rust in the pictures. Mostly just road grime which you could have steam cleaned off.

POST 5Original post

All the body work metal is galvanized or is coated with some super duty corrosion inhibitors. The entire body-in-white metal shell is immersed in several baths before any further assembly or painting happens. So at this point in the car's age (15-20 years) rust should pop up only where the metal has been damaged, scratched, creased, etc. How It's Made: Dream Cars: https://www.sciencechannel.com/tv-sh...es/porsche-911

Agreed. These cars do not seem to rust.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

thanks all for weighing in. I didn't know Cosmoline was a thing, we learn every day... I will proceed with the PPI on Thursday and hopefully everything checks out.

Best of luck. I am a relatively new 996 owner myself and I absolutely love the car. So much fun...

POST 9Original post

Look like there could be an oil leak causing dirt and grime to collect on the sump pan. Most likely a rear main seal leak, trans output shaft seal, or IMS seal. Easy fix but trans has to come out. About 10 hours worth of labor.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

RMS, IMS and maybe clutch is on my list of maintenance once I take possession of the car.

POST 11Original post

Fun video, but omg, how many times does the voiceover say 3.4 liter v6...

I agree with Dryslick that there seems to be a little more grime than you would expect to see on a 30k car but rust-wise it looks fine. This is my car at 38k. The Cosmoline is the patchy brown stuff

POST 14Original post

Good luck with the PPI. I am a 1 year old owner and living the dream!! You will too. Just tonight a guy was walking by the hotel I'm staying at and admiring my '99, and he couldn't believe it's 20 years old. These beauties sure get the looks.

^^ This ^^ other than this, it looks really clean - doubtful it ever saw the snow. If you really want to check for rust (as in body rust), remove the two plastic corner pieces that are just in front of the rear wheels. If you don't find any rust there, you should be good to go! Good luck
