Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I reset the DME before installing but even after a couple drives there doesn't appear to be any discernible difference in idle or performance.
Leading evidence: 'Reset dme' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace 124 old style sensor' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

It is unfortunate that the 124 sensor is more sensitive to dirt, but has to be used since there is no updated map.

be used to replace the 124 old style sensor on 996.

Porsche for some reason when trying to fix problems with Boxster 125-00 sensor decided to make an update for the 124 senor also, so when replaceing the 124 with 125-01, you re-program, when replacing the 125-00 with 125-01 you don't reprogram.

Anyone else running the newer part number in an e-gas 3.4?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

This pelican article has a great summary of the three general MAF groupings for the 996:

But does anyone actually know the difference between the original e-gas sensor 996.606.124.00 and the newer e-gas sensor 996.606.125.01?
The PET still calls out the original for up to 01 and the newer one for 02 and later.
The only reason I ask is that my 2000 came with a KN intake with the newer one. I just got the original one from Amazon to try it out and see if it fixed my higher than normal idle (800rpm) and my long term fuel trims (1.2).
I reset the DME before installing but even after a couple drives there doesn't appear to be any discernible difference in idle or performance. I'll probably give it a bit longer to see if the fuel trims end up high again.

The "124" sensor is the old version and had problems with dirt contamination, the "125" is the new design that is less likely to become contaminated, BUT also requires a re-calibration of the DME maps to match. You can see a difference on the end of the sensor.
If your car has been re-calibrated for the "new style 125" sensor, then the old "124" should not be used.
EDIT #2: the 125 new style sensor
should not
be used to replace the 124 old style sensor on 996. That is for Boxster only and has a re-program to match.
Oops just saw your update. So it looks like I can go either way. Sounds like it's best to go with the new style though. So far I'm seeing much less long term fuel trimming with the new 124 sensor I just installed. I'll run it for a bit, then swap it back to the 125 to confirm. It's possible my 125 is on its way out.
Well it's actually a little confusing, but your car was not suppose to have the 125 new sensor installed, the 124 is the correct one.
123 is for cable, 124 is for e-gas 99-2000-2001, 125 is for 2002+.
For the 996 there is not a DME re-programming match to correct the map, so, the 125 should not be used in place of the 124.
Porsche for some reason when trying to fix problems with Boxster 125-00 sensor decided to make an update for the 124 senor also, so when replaceing the 124 with 125-01, you re-program, when replacing the 125-00 with 125-01 you don't reprogram.
Ah I misunderstood that the 996 could just take either. Makes sense now that if the boxster needs reprogramming it means there's enough difference in the two sensors that a direct swap is not recommended.
So it looks like I need to keep my new 124 MAF. I'll swap it back after a few days to the 125 just to confirm that it makes my fuel trims just up. Maybe this is why my mpg has always been terrible?
Since the 124 is more dirt sensitive, do you have any thoughts on blocking off the intake holes on the bottom of the air box inside the engine compartment? I don't get any sound value from them and that seems to be their only purpose. It seems they are pulling much dirtier air than the snorkel.
I'm sure I helped with the misunderstanding as I was a little confused trying to recall the specifics of the details, while giveing bad statements.
Yes you need to stay with the 124 sensor, you can swap in the 125 just to see the difference and log it. Yes I'm sure having the wrong MAF sensor was effecting your fuel mileage.
I don't think I would block the bottom holes in the air box, they are mainly to let water out of the box so as not to soak the filter. It is unfortunate that the 124 sensor is more sensitive to dirt, but has to be used since there is no updated map.
