Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Replace with crush washers' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean extra lube off your floor too' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

(But the manual does say to fill to the bottom edge of the fill hole.)

I did mine last night and was surprised to see no crush washers on neither the drain plug nor the fill plug.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have an early 2002 Carrera Coupe 2 Mk II (2001 build date)I have seen the service manual and it calls for 2 different wrenches to remove the drain. Is there a way to find out without having to pull off the undercovers and looking? I'd rather be able to buy the tool in advance and do the job all at once.
I think the options are triple square or hex.
Thanks,
Andy
On my 2001 it was a 10 mm hex. I don't believe you need to remove an undercover to access the plugs so you should be able jack it up and take a quick look.
Well, I did that at first and the synchros didn't wrok well at all.... So I drained some fluid. It could be possible that I didn't have car 100 level at the time because I ended adding about 4 quarts of Tranny fluid in there without any coming out of the filler hole. So eventually I over filled it.
A good way to make sure it is at the proper level when you are not sure the car is level, is fill it up and then lower the car back onto it's wheels with the plug out. Let it sit for 30 minutes or so and the extra lube will remove itself. Jack it up and install the plug.
You might also want to clean the extra lube off your floor too.
When you guys did you change, were crush washers on the plugs?
I did mine last night and was surprised to see no crush washers on neither the drain plug nor the fill plug. They were very tight! I put crush washers on both after fluid replacement.
Also, the drain and fill plug were the same plug. I thought the drain plug was going to be magnetic?
You mean type of fluid or service interval? I used Red Line 75/90. I would think frequencey would depend on driving style. DD maybe once every 2 years or so. Doing DE's maybe every year. That's my opinion anyway.
My car had 80,000 miles and the fluid coming out was very clean. It's a DD only.
The 993s had crush washers and the drain plug was also magnetic. What you guys are seeing on the 996 is another Porsche cost cut back item...
The change interval for street driving is 30k, I went through variety of different fluids to find one that is best for the trans/axle box design. Ended going with Mobil 1 Delvac in the end and are happy with the results. That's not the regular Mobil 1 gear oil you buy at the local auto parts store, not too many places carry them.
Sure, why not? Changing it early really doesn't buy you anything other than more effort and money. I've done oil analysis to demonstrate that the oil makes it to 10k change intervals just fine. The metal wear levels are miniscule and the oil properties are within spec.
