Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a '99 with the integral orange indicator lenses and halogen headlights I want to upgrade/modernize. There was a guy on this list who was selling a projector retrofit kit for the early style headlights that required splitting the headlight open which looked within my risk plan. Pelican appears to have taken over his business, but Pelican is always out of stock on the parts. Looks like a no go. Meanwhile they are selling a pair of headlight units on eBay for $1,000 and you're done. has anyone bought these headlights? They seem to be selling a bunch of them. Is the quality reasonable? The eBay search string is: Porsche Carerra 911 996 DRL Style LED Chrome Projector Headlight This said, I just received some red/white LED style tail lights. I was expecting the worst but was surprised to see how this and heavy the plastic case was. The guts may be junk, we'll see. But the case was well made.

It looks like the 986 guy gave up on that venture...nuthin' but crickets...

POST 3Original post

The guy that makes them (Fred, AKA Nine8Six) is a French-Canadian living in China and has severe restrictions on which sites he can view due to Chinese Internet censoring. I know this has been a real problem for him for the last year. He was also in a very bad motorcycle accident recently. He may get back into it, but info is limited. The LED eBay headlights are very low quality and look tacky, IMO. There are other projector kits that can be installed into halogen headlights, but they pale in comparison to Fred's. Just to be a jerk, here are some pics of my headlights with Fred's projectors and some other custom work that I did myself. I understand some people not caring for the orange, but I don't quite get the hate for the standard halogens that so many people seem to have. I think the OEM units with quality bulbs work very well, and better than any other vehicle I've had with standard halogen reflectors.

My halogen wiring is a bit flaky so that's the main reason I've looked into Fred's lights. It's kind of annoying having to remove the housing & accessing the wiring. Other than that, agreed the OEM units are perfectly fine. Sucks to hear he had an accident, best wishes++

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

No halogen hater here, just looking for an upgrade. My Wife's e350 has projector headlights and they are definitely better than my Porsche's halogen ones. kderry-those lights are exactly what I am looking to do. I have seen some of the retrofits Fred did and they are the nicest headlight upgrades going. Very nice.

POST 7Original post

Not to rub it in, but here is a shot of mine. If you look closely, you can see "Porsche Motorsports Optics" around the perimeter. I bought them from Fred about 3-4 years ago and had someone from here do the install as I chickened out when it came to putting them in the oven. An excellent upgrade. Hopefully Fred will recover and get back in the business.

POST 8Original post

does anyone have any contact details fro Fred please re his headlight upgrades?

POST 9Original post

It's been 2.5 years since the last reply to this thread... I think it's safe to say Fred is out of business (I think he used to sell them through Pelican Parts...no mas)...
