That said, if my car had been a coupe I probably would have kept it, changed the wheels and maybe done a wrap.
Leading evidence: 'Replace wheels and maybe done a wrap' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace wheels and maybe done a wrap' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I had a Golden for 14yr and while hes been gone nearly 3yr, Im still not over it enough to get another.
I sold my very nice, tastefully modded 996 about a year ago. I didn't drive it much so it sat a lot. One of the reasons is because I always had my dog with me and he didn't like going fast on back roads. He passed away a little while ago and now I'm thinking about another sports car.
My car (see below) was a cab with fancy wheels, Brembos, shifter and ss exhaust. I bought it from a friend but it wasn't really the car I wanted. I wanted a coupe that I could mod into something sort of like an R Groupe car. Mine was a '99 with 65K miles and original IMS.
So, I'm trying to find a replacement but not sure I want another IMS, AOS, intermix, bore scoring potential nightmare!
My other issue with the 996 was the horrible resale. I ended up selling the car for only $14K. Everyone would tell me how nice it was but nobody would pony up the cash. That said, if my car had been a coupe I probably would have kept it, changed the wheels and maybe done a wrap. I really loved driving it and I still think it is hard to beat the performance/handling/build for the buck.
So maybe this forum isn't the best place to ask but what other alternatives are there? I know a C5/6 Corvette is an option and I've had both previously. They do everything well but doesn't have the build quality or the lightness feel of a 911. I'd love an air cooled car but the prices of those have gone nuts. My brother had a 944 years ago and he still raves about its handling. If I bought one of those i'd probably want to do an LS swap though!
I am tempted to find another 996 that might be a little rough for around $10K and factoring in IMS fix, AOS replacement and some other maintenance issues and still have some $ for some mods (shifter, exhaust, etc) I know many of you will say to spend more and get a nicer one but after getting only $14K for my super nice car I'm reluctant to spend more. I'm actually kind of kicking myself in the butt now for selling the damn thing so cheap.
If it were me, I'd look for a cheap/100K mile car, and budget $1400 for the IMS Solution(Charles' eBay specials) $500 for a new clutch(Sachs Kit at RockAuto), $2500 for new suspension(Feal & Adjustable bits), and $???? for all the other mods you want.
That is if you can do all your own work and have the tools necessary.
If not, buy the best car you can.
I am sorry to hear about your dog.
Buy another 996. Nobody talks about the years they drove a Camry.
That being said, I do talk about the years I drove an AE95 Corolla Wagon.
That blue 99 for sale in Arizona might be right up your ally. I personally think sometimes the more mileage the better with these cars, especially if your plan includes upgrades anyhow.
Nothing, I say nothing can satisfy the itch like a 911. You can come close with a boxster or cayman, but still there just something about the flat-6 and rear engine design of these cars. I do sense a little seller's remorse, but getting $14,000 for a mk1 cabriolet 996 is really not that horrible in today's market. Heck, I'm seeing the 986 in the sub-$5000 range. The 996 will continue to be the best 911 value for some time to come. The mezger based cars will probably go up in value especially if it's a limited edition from the factory, but the base Carreras are still doomed to depreciation. The Carrera that will still hold their value or more are the cars that have had all the necessary work done to them. You know the list.
It all boils down to what you're willing to pay for the ink on your bucket.
Sorry to hear about the puppo. I had a Golden for 14yr and while hes been gone nearly 3yr, Im still not over it enough to get another. They are mans best friend.
honestly, there is no better bang for the buck. Certainly not worry free or devoid of needing big money to r&r, but at the end of the day, theres nothing else out there under $20 with the same build quality and performance. If you go in eyes wide open and know what to look for, Id say its the best gamble out there.
Honda S2000. Bargain of the century.
A narrow niche car staying in the Porsche family is the 1989/91 944 Turbo S. There weren't many imported, and those that were seem to stay in a family for a while. By 1989 they had all the bugs worked out of the deal, and with a slightly larger scroll and better exhaust scavenging, the car would breath quite nicely. The diff between the 1986/7 and the last iteration is very noticeable. Also, the Turbo S came standard with suspension option M030, which lowered the car a bit, and provided stiffer handling. It was a racer-in-a-box for that family.
Thanks. I have no wife or kids so he was my constant companion for many years.
I'm thinking it is going to be another 996 or a C5/6 Vette. I've had many Vettes but only the one Porsche. Maintenance and mods are way cheaper on the Vette. Performance wise they are pretty comparable but build quality is way different. Also, the handling of a rear engine was much different. It actually took me a while to feel comfortable driving it fast on twisties as I was so used to the Corvettes and other front engine/rear drive cars. Once I figured it out it became quite fun to drive, especially on up hills. I live by the eastern Sierra's and there are some great roads to wail on in the mountains. Dang it! I should have kept the one I had!
S2000 is an interesting suggestion. Are they comparably priced to a 996?
I had a Nissan 350Z that had been lowered, exhaust, shifter, etc. It was my ex's daily but I take it out on weekends and thrash it. It was a fun car. Someone suggested a turbo/supercharged Miata. We bought a Miata for my ex before the 350Z. Under powered but I rode in a supercharged one and it was pretty fast, faster than a stock 996.
That is an interesting one! So a '99 is "vintage" now?
I like the rebuilt engine and the car looks pretty clean. Not sure about the 19" wheels though. Mine had 19" wheels and it rode pretty stiff. Still, if I could get him down a bit in price I think it would be a good one.
April 27 will be the 1 year anniversary of the passing of my beloved Max. Max was 2 months shy of his 18th birthday. I miss him. I also miss my beloved Wrinkles who died in 2000 at 14. I now have 9 month Luke. He is also beloved even as a puppy.
Point being dogs only give love. Get another.
Yup. find one that stock. A lot of them have nasty mods and track time. Low end is $13k, high end mid-20s.

The S2000 is a very nice ride, I had an '04 for 7 years. It was very easy to maintain, pretty quick and handled wonderfully. But.... in the 7 years I had the car, I never really bonded with it. Driven at legal speeds it was quite tame and Civic like, with fairly numb steering. Once the Vtec kicked in it was a different story, the motor loved to rev and came alive at over 4k. I would recommend you try one, if you like it there is not a better low maintainance car with performance like it.
Well Porsche thinks so. You can look up parts numbers and buy factory parts for classic 996 at

Get another dog and another 996! I have 3 dogs and Ive only owned my 03 c4s for a month (my first ever p-car), and driving it is the only thing that I enjoy as much as being with them. In fact I wanted a 4th dog and my wife told me to buy the car instead.

I have a thread in the 997 forum along these lines. Bottom line, it may be really difficult to go from Porsche to an S2000 as an example.
A lot of input from people that have had both and or other vehicles to consider.
