Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I think I used a 10mm wrench and it worked perfectly to snug up the coil bolts.
Outcome qualification: Negation, uncertainty or missing explicit repair resolution overrides the raw extraction signal.

To get the plug out i used a 5/8” plug socket with swivel, a 3” extension and a 3/8” ratchet wrench.

To get the coil off I used a mini 1/4” ratchet with a 5mm insert.

Knew about the e-torx going into the job so bought a socket set just for this but it turns out I didn't need it.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Installed new coils this weekend ('04 C4S). Originals had 5mm hex bolts, new ones had bolts with e-torx heads. Knew about the e-torx going into the job so bought a socket set just for this but it turns out I didn't need it. Both a 5/16" socket and an 8mm socket fit the e-torx bolt and were sufficient to torque it into place. Torque for installing coils is low at just 7.5ft-lbs, so straight forward to use ordinary sockets instead of e-torx. Even better, the small sockets worked great with a tiny torque wrench (90 in-lb) so was able to actually torque them to spec. Wish I had know this going into this job, so sharing this post.
I just pulled all 6 of my coils to retorque the plugs and never touched the exhaust. I was able to get all the connectors removed without issue, but to install one (I forget which cylinder) I had to connect it before installing the bolts so I could rotate the coil slightly to get it connected. I have the luxury of putting the car on a lift though, I could see it considerably more difficult on my back.
I think I used a 10mm wrench and it worked perfectly to snug up the coil bolts. Straight on in shot and so easy. And for the question of muffler removal, you don't need to do it. Remember, the coil pack extensions are just rubber and flex a little bit to maneuver them in. For prep I spray the outside with silicone spray and pack the spark plug hole and connector hole with dielectric grease prior to installation.
I'm on my back, my head is bleeding and I woke up sick...
#4 is the issue, I have the lock unclipped but I can not get it to slide up and off. I have no room to get my hand high enough. I even tried pushing with a long flat blade. I can see the safety clip is off of the tab.
Bill, glad you got it! I’m watching the other thread and pulling for you. I hope your engine turns out OK and it’s just the AOS.
I was also on my back doing the plugs/coils and can confirm it’s possible to do, just tedious. #4 was the toughest. To get the coil off I used a mini 1/4” ratchet with a 5mm insert. To get the plug out i used a 5/8” plug socket with swivel, a 3” extension and a 3/8” ratchet wrench. (Thanks to Ahsai for the tips on these tools.) It took some bending, twisting and swearing. I have medium-sized hands which helped.
Keep going, you can do it
I don’t envy that one bit! I can only imagine it’s hard to do this stuff with the flu and can associate with adrenaline that pushing behind it all... Keep your knuckles intact!
They're worked, and I hit my head pretty good on the (something, lol) not hard enough to knock any sense into me though...I could have dropped the motor and trans faster than it took me to get #4 coil un-plugged.
