I am going to have them do a normal PPI plus check the list from of Chad's Ultimate buyers guide.

Hi,
Can someone recommend a mechanic for a PPI in Louisville KY on a 2000 C4 Cab.
I am going to have them do a normal PPI plus check the list from of Chad's Ultimate buyers guide.
I really appreciate it. I found two places but they are not going to work out.

Excuse what may be considered as sacrilege, but you might want to ask on the Pelican forum. They get a lot more "coverage," it's a larger forum audience, and I'll bet that you'll get a number of responses in a couple of hours.
Be sure that you discuss with each of the shops what they will do as part of the PPI. For this car, it seems that the most relevant examinations are for ANY oil leaks, and (as for any Porsche) a compression and leakdown test. They will charge extra for the leakdown and compression, but I think that it's money well spent. There really is no other way to get a solid picture of the state of the engine. You want to be sure that these numbers are good.
If not - be prepared to WALK AWAY FAST - in the opposite direction. I paid for 3 PPI's before I had one done on a car that passed with flying colors. It was cheap money in relation to the potential expense of fixing up one of these cars. Remember, there are a lot of 996's out there, prices are very soft. You can get a solid car for reasonable money.

Here is what I was planning on having checked.
1.Check for oil leaks. In particular the rear main seal and the intermediate shaft bearing. Were the updates done for the RMS and IMS?
2. Check the front steering rack and boots for leaks.
3. Check the coolant tank and cap for leaks. Was the update done for this?
4. Transmission. Does the car shift smoothly. Please test 2nd gear especially for smoothness.
5. Brakes - how much wear? Do they need pads? Rotors?
6. Clutch - Does it feel solid? Please do a 3rd gear test (from a stand still) to check for slippage.
7. Electronics - Please check all switches and all systems to ensure in working order.
8. Window regulators - Please check the normal operation and make sure they snug up and down on door close.
9. Scan the OBD Computer for Type II over-revs.
10. How much tread is left on the tires?
11. Compression and leakdown test.
Any thing else?
Ed, it is kind of funny that you mention Pelican parts forum...I was reading both of these and saw the other day where they said this 996 forum is way better. :-)

I do think that the 996 forum on Rennlist is better for Pcarjockeys with 996's. There are always 30+ people on this forum at any one time. On the Pelican BB (their 996 forum), there are usually (from my experience) less than 10. BUT, you don't need to look for someone that is particularly experienced with 996's. Well . . . . . . you do, but it is likely that any indie shop that works exclusively or regularly on Porsches will spend a certain amount of time working in 996's.
So, your goal is to find an all around Porsche Independent shop. Then call them. Talk to the owner or manager. Find out how he feels about 996's, find out how many 996's they work on regularly. Ask him about his experience with RMS and/or IMS issues. Ask him if he has any particular comments on the 996 vs other P-Cars. Then make a decision if you think that he's the right guy to do a look-see at the car you want to buy.
Doing a PPI isn't really rocket science, but the shop needs to have a methodology for the inspection IMHO. The shops that I've used have a form that they use for their PPI's. If you want, have him fax you a blank form so that you can see what he's planning on doing. If he doesn't have a form, it doesn't mean that he'll do a bad job, it just means that unless you detail exactly what you want, and check it while they still have the car there, you may not get what you're expecting.
