What you did was the equivalent of walking into a harley bar where there has been a long-running "heated" discussion about "X" over a period of years, and then saying "well, I don't really know that I want to buy a harley because I heard that "X." It is no wonder that someone hassles you .

If you are buying it for street use, and even for occasional track day use (DEs), the Targa is fine.

Suggestion
The main benefit of a targa over the coupe and the convertible, particularly for street use, is the openess you can get during cooler or bad weather, which is incredible, and the practicality of having a hatchback, which allows you to use all of the storage room for the back seats.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all, Been shopping for a 911 Coupe, and a coupe is what I really want.
My price range has had me looking at 00-01 cars for the most part.. but..
I may be able to get into a nice 02 Targa thats seems well optioned at a good price.
How are these cars? do they rattle, leak???
Any input appreciated,
Thanks!
Marc
They are beautiful cars. I almost pulled the trigger on one myself but then settled on a Coupe. Based on how much my sunroof rattles, I can only guess it would be a bigger problem in the Targa. I still like their looks though.

I've had ann 02 Targa for 2 years. No leaking or rattle issues. In the winter the seals are little squeaky until the car warms up. The only complaint would be in the summer after parking in the sun it takes a while for the A/C to cool car down. The best features without doubt is the hatchback opening, and the massive sun roof.
i would hesitate because 1) it'll never be the same experience as driving a cab; 2) you get all that extra weight up top and also lose the structural rigidity of a coupe.
go hot or cold, not lukewarm
that's ridiculous.
Have you ever owned one?
The '02 Targas are great. You will not notice the additional weight on the streets, and anyone who tells you that they can notice the vertical distribution of the weight is lying to you or doesn't know what they are talking about . . . even on the track.
If you are buying the car primarily for track use, obviously do not buy a targa. If you are buying it for street use, and even for occasional track day use (DEs), the Targa is fine.
You will not notice any rigidity difference between the coupe and the Targa, and I have driven both quite a bit, on the street and the track.

(TD used to own one)
it's not ridiculous, but no i have not owned one but have driven one.
the cab still kills the targa for noise and just being out there with the world.
the closed coupe still gives you the 911 tradition. the targa is really just a half-arsed approach to marrying the two together and you can see it in the half-**** sales numbers (demand).
it's totally niche and i can see why. it's not that great. it's a middling effort thus my advice to go cab or coupe.
It is ridiculous because it is not trying to be a cab. It is better than a cab IMHO of course.
The Targa doesn't give you Porsche tradition? WTF have you been smoking? Please pass that sh*t down to me and don't bogart it in the process.
And a middling effort? Please. IIRC your C4S is just as heavy or heavier than a Targa, so, if you want to talk aboout middling efforts, one can argue that a C4S is a middling effort that isn't as good as the C2 or the Turbo . . . sort of the worst of both worlds. But then again, only someone who doesn't "get" it would view the world in those terms.
but the c4s at least gives you better brakes, suspension and a wider chassis that absolutely annihilates in the looks dept and ultimately is faster around a track if we're going to split hairs like that.
dont' get your panties in a bunch because i'm providing my recommendations. the targa is a lame 911 that is to be avoided. stick with the cab or coupe. don't go for the sky lights car.
and yes for those that need things spelled out, the above comments are my very own special opinions.
1) If I wanted the same experience as driving a cab, I'd have...bought a cab.
2) Edmunds says the Targa is 132 lbs heavier. It's possible that you might notice the extra weight, but I can't imagine that you'd be able to "find" the extra weight. Structural rigidity should be identical or even stronger than a coupe; the actual roof skin/panel isn't providing the structure--the pillars and roof rails are, and if anything, they'd be beefed up in the Targa.
Besides that, you get the added benefit of the hatchback rear glass--I'd love a Targa just for that feature?
What, you don't haul stuff in your 911? Sometimes mine is like a little pickup.
I urge you to read "Goldilocks and the Three Bears".
why don't we setup a web conference for you to do the honor as reader and page turner on behalf of all us on rennlist
good luck with your targa purchase haha
If by "kills the Targa for noise" you mean "louder than the Targa", you'd be right. Personally, I don't like a loud car OR "just being out there with the world."
The half-**** sales numbers probably have a lot more to do with Porsche's strange current policy of only selling the car as a Targa 4 and Targa 4S.
Dude, it's a $90k sports car--of course it's "totally niche". My stock C4 is also "totally niche".
Amatuer. If you really want hostility, go to the 993 forum and tell them that the 996 is far superior to their heavy, slow and crappy valve-guide prone cars.
I had a 911 SC targa for ten years and was all set to get a 993 ( same style as the 996 ) Targa. After driving a few I decided I wanted a cab w/a windscreen. The Targa just didn't do it for me, just seemed like a giant sunroof. When I decided I wanted a cab I checked out the 996 and the search was over, but like TD said - that's another thread.
The people who have Targas love them, but it's not the same experience as it was w/the old Targas.
From what I'm finding out All of these cars Boxters and 911s from 99' and up have a bad problem of a leaking Rear main seal that will cost you $1000.00 to fix out of warrantee. Some owners reporting repeat repairs for the same problem. I wanted one too but now the news is convincing me otherwise.

well, I did see one thread recently where a guy was wanting advice on buying a 966... he kept on referring to the 996 as a 966, so I think he genuinely believed what he was typing.
OK, check out Brew123's 1st post on the 997 forum posted at 8:51. His second post was on this thread (post # 26) at 9:01. Seems to be a theme going here! Can you say Troll????

Ok Ok Geeza whiz, I'm a new user didn't mean to offend anyone. I'll post a picture in a couple of days. Now you have to be a member to post a pic. and wait for your member number. Also The Molsons beer redirect was pretty darn funny if I say so myself. It's obvious you guys are protective of your cars, your club is not mutually exclusive.
Cory, probably not because he has the right to post what he wants. Since he didn't attack anyone personally or try to sell something, I don't think the moderators would see any reason to delete it. It will be interesting to see if he ever posts anything on Rennlist again.
I was refering to an artical I read in the Sept issue of Excellence page 120 "which to Buy" and asking for feedback. Has anyone that considered my question read this artical? It seems I am the one being attacked.
What you did was the equivalent of walking into a harley bar where there has been a long-running "heated" discussion about "X" over a period of years, and then saying "well, I don't really know that I want to buy a harley because I heard that "X." It is no wonder that someone hassles you . . . .
There are thousands of posts about RMS failures in this forum, the 997 forum and, gasp, the GT3 forums . . .
There are thousands of posts about valve guide failures and CEL light issues in the 993 forum.
Each porsche tends to have its "issues." You should buy the one you really want, because each issue can be dealt with, and many seem to be overblown.
Good luck.
Brew - I guess I may have "jumped to conclusions" about your initial two posts. If that is the case, then I owe you an apology!
The reason for my "conclusions" was the fact that some of us (or most of us) that have been around here for a while have seen the occasional post of someone new that comes in and makes some Chicken Little "the sky is falling" comments just to "stir the pot." Usually, they are a User (never intend to become a Member) and after 5 or 6 posts, we never hear from them again. Since you are new here, you obviously haven't seen these "one hit wonders," as I call them, and don't have the same "historical perspective" we have concerning these types of comments made in initial posts from a "newbie."
Now that I see that you are a Member, I can assume you are serious about sticking around here and were not just attempting to
with your comments. So, let me start all over again!
Brew - Welcome to Rennlist! I noticed from the thread you started that you are looking for a 996. I will post on that thread about your RMS questions. Again, welcome to the Porsche Phunny Pharm!
Keep in mind that I am not trying to be aggressive . . . at all.
I don't blame anyone for wanting to research this issue. It is a valid issue and questions regarding the issue are perfectly acceptable.
It just has been beat so to death, that "usually" the only ones who bring it up like that are those who want to have an interesting fight on a boring Tuesday.
I had an RMS leak, and it was fixed under warranty. It never leaked again after that. No big deal.
My appoligies to Marc G. and his thread. Also to the rest of you for my clumsy intro. I am going to the chat, don't any of you work? Life is good, ha! meet me there. Brew
You will find that this is quite a (I like to think) professional forum. RL'ers were just trying to keep the board free of troll material which it almost came off as. Welcome aboard.
Well, it came across as especially troll-ish because it was posted in a thread about another topic entirely.
Yeah, me too, except my "no big deal" just took a new engine to rectify.
I like the targa...always wondering if it is not getting to hot inside, because of the huge sunroof...my X5 has a huge sunroof and I have to keep it covered to not get a headache during the summer.
In DC, I never had any problems. For the sake of full disclosure, however, I parked it in the garage at home and in a garage at work, so it is not as if it ever had extended periods of time in the elements, but I never felt uncomfortably warm in the car.
