Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm thinking about doing this, as I bought zimmerman rotors for the front, not knowing that the hats have no corrossion protection (so yes, my rotor hats are now a deep orange). I know folks have painted these, but I'm curious how the paint has held up? I painted my calipers with great results, but I'd imagine the rotor hats get much hotter than the calipers. If you have painted your hats, I'd love to know the color, type/brand of paint, whether you track the car, how long they have been painted, and how they are holding up. Thanks!

POST 2Original post

Oh yea.... I just got some sandpaper, primer and high-temp silver paint from Autozone. No need to do anything radical here. The old paint sands off very easily. Prime, paint... That overspray on the rotor face will come right off the first time you hit the brakes. -Charles

POST 3Original post

Powdercoat, kits are cheap out there. Eastwood company comes to mind.

POST 4Original post

I'm surprised that you did this without taking off the rotors - how much masking of the car did you have to do?

POST 5Original post

Quotes source post: 4795963

I did the exact same as Charles. Take the wheel off, shoot the rotor down with brake cleaner, mask the caliper, and spray the hats. I used cast iron gray krylon. You dont have to mask the car at all. The overspray on the rotor will just rub right off. I would do powdercoat the next time for more strength.

Cool! Thanks - this job is on my to-do list, but I was too lazy to remove the calipers to take off the rotors.

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 4796390

Actually I lied, I didnt mask the rotors. Just placed a piece of cardboad between the hat and the caliper. I too am lazy.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks to those who have responded. As for the durability...how is the paint holding up? That is my big concern at this point. Tippy, did you do black or silver. I'm torn at this point because silver looks good, but black wouldn't show dust.

POST 9Original post

Quotes source post: 4796559

I did cast iron gray or is it grey? It has held up a couple a years but it is showing slight rust in some spots. It really needs to be treated with a rust inhibitor like ospho or similar product to kill the rust before the paint. I would do a powdercoat job next time.

POST 10Original post

i want to do this, but too lazy to do it myself. i'd keep it as close to oem shades as possible. black would look funky i think.

POST 11Original post

The look is a huge improvement and will go on my lengthy to do list, thanks for a other good idea.

POST 12Original post

Mine's were done in black which a must if you have wheels with black centers.

POST 13Original post

These are a year old now...no problems with VHT paint.

POST 14Original post

Dealers have been doing this for years. 996 rotor hats rust, period. So rather than take warranty claims and replace the rotors, Porsche instructed the dealers to knock down the rust, paint with high temp, and march on. Works fine. Black, Silver, no matter....it seals things up enough to prevent a nastier rust bucket look.

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Awesome guys. Now I'm just torn on the color. I kind of agree with Ben (did I just say that?) that black might look funny, given my silver open-design 5-spoke wheels (If I had black wheels it would be a no brainer). Maybe I can get some of the high temp paint in more of a grey, something in between silver and black. Thanks again guys!

POST 18Original post

I think any Rustoleum enamel that you brush on will do. The surface of the hats is rough enough that you won't have visible brush marks.

POST 19Original post

Scott - I painted my top hats about 15 moonths ago. The paint is holding up very well. All of the paint info in in the 1st post of the attached thread. Unfortunately, the pics in the 1st post are terrible. There are better pics on page two of the thread. Don't worry about maksing the rotors too clost to the top hats. Once the paint is dry and the wheels are remounted, go for a short drive and the brakes will remose any overspray from the rotors. I used a small plastic bag to cover the calipers. Make sure you cover your car with a drop cloth, because the paint will settle on everything. Don't ask me how I know! Painted Top Hats

Thanks Ben That is my bad boy 964, idles like a pack of Harleys and eats NA 996's. Scary fast with oversteer too

POST 21Original post

It usually isnt the paint that fails, it is the rust that continues to grow under the paint that comes back through. Ospho needs to be applied and then sanded off the metal. This will make a good foundation for just about any paint.

POST 22Original post

I painted my 944's rotor hats with Rustoleum 'Hammered Silver' brush on paint. I didn't want any over-spray all over the place. You brush it on, right over the rust, and it forms a protective barrier, and gives the hats a nice "hammered" metal look. Way easier than masking and spraying, I think. Don't have any pics, but the paint lasted a year before I sold the car. And it improved the look 100%. I hate rusty rotors!
