Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

OK, so I am fairly new at this but whats your take on waving? When 2 motorcycles pass each other on the road it is "normal" for them to wave at each other (except Harley to Jap bike cross overs) especially in winter for the hardcore riders When 2 Jeeps pass, same thing.. a friendly wave Other "vintage" sports cars... same thing Yet I have yet to get a single lifted finger from another P-car driver (so I have stopped trying) Is this just because where I live or is this more the "norm" Voice your opinion.... <building bunker>

POST 2Original post

There are different types of P car drivers. Some love their cars, some love themselves. Here in Pittsburgh where peeps are friendly, a wave is common.

POST 4Original post

I wave to most I see....and get a wave back maybe half the time...maybe less. But when I see someone in a parking lot with a similar car....it turns into a 1/2 hour conversation...almost ALL the time. J

POST 5Original post

I initiate a wave a lot less than I use to. You get a little beaten down by nobody returning the greet. Sometimes I'm pleasantly surprised when someone else initiates. Maybe as a group we deserve our reputation??

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

here here.. i agree with the 1/2 hour (or hour) parking lot conversations even with non p-car owners (and most of the time THEY initiate it... like "WOW, Nice car, what year is it".....here we go!) :-)

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 5742132

I recall reading that the double headlight flash is the "secret" handshake for P-cars. I used to see it more, but now, with so many Porsches on the road, there's almost no acknowledgement. I still flash my lights though. I have been "waved" at by a few here, including a Carerra GT recently. But for the most part, nada. -td

POST 8Original post

Truth is, a lot of Porsche owners these days are dicks that think they're better than everyone 'cause they own a Porsche. Well, they might be right, we are better because we own Porsches, lol, but we don't have to be dicks about it. At first I looked over & waved all the time, but too many are just way too **** to respond. I think they need to get laid. On the other hand, non-Porsche owners either love or hate you. You get a lot of cute golddiggers waving & saying "NICE CAR!" or nice people who stop you in the parking lot & ask you about the car. I've had sooo many good looking girls that I don't even know ask me "when are you gonna give me a ride?" I just ignore them because I'm not really in the mood to get all my money squeezed out of me. THEN, there's the idiots in Mustangs (especially the hideous 90's ones), Chargers, or other "muscle cars" & the ricers in their Lancers, Eclipse, & other 2 Fast 2 Furious crap. Most of them give dirty looks & rev their engine so you can hear their crapping-sound straight pipes they bought at Autozone for .99 cents, & they hate on you 'cause they know you're better... But worst of all, the Corvette or Viper owners. I don't think they realize my car isn't a 1/4 mile car like theirs. It's a REAL sports car. The other day, a moron in a Corvette was next to me at a stop light revving his engine, I just ignored him as he sped off. He then slowed down until I caught up & he started beeping & flipping me off, then driving like an idiot, going in front of me & purposely braking & just doing stupid ****. Some people seriously have mental problems. He got pissed 'cause I hurt his gay Corvette ego by ignoring him. He should sell his car & use the money to buy a full time psychologist.

POST 9Original post

Quotes source post: 5742132

I don't wave at 996+ owners anymore, it seems they are upset they aren't the only ones who own a Porsche. The 993 and older Porsche owners wave all the time.

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 5742636

Import cars don't give me a hard time. Evo's and STI's only want to race from a stand still because they believe they have superior traction but they don't realize that 911's have engines over their rear wheels(although we don't have a clutch that can really handle too many crazy lauches). Corvette owners typically drive slow but it seems the word is out that C6's are faster and handle just as well as 997's 997's do so they, c6's, ten to challenge a bit more. C5's you can beat in a 1/4 mile, you've got traction they don't.

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 5742164

LOL I tihnk this says it all. I try to wave at other owners most of the time. Sometimes, they just ignore me like I'm a groupie or something.

POST 12Original post

I France I used to waive and guys will reply. Here (CA) I waive or flash lights and almost nobody replies... I feel like an idiot. Now I flash only 'special' P cars (vintage, racing look, or that have a sticker on windshield that could be PCA or something, etc) and the return is about 50%... from far better. F360, C6 and new Vipers are car I take care about because if the driver is not too bad he can kick a 996 pretty easily... except in the mountains

POST 14Original post

I only wave at air/oilcooled cars. Real Porsches dont have water in them! Hey wait a minute I have one of those

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Viper vid in the mountains (same outcome for the Corvette I would imagine) Have fun! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yR8f6wlG6SE OOOPs!

POST 16Original post

I wave and/or flash. Some of the time, it scares the mice in my garage.

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 5743256

I hear "Bounce" dryer sheets layed all over the place has the same effect on mice... have you tried that? <although its not as fun as waiting in the car w/o making a single movement for hours to catch one off guard>

POST 18Original post

To wave or not to wave...that is the question. Different folks, different strokes I guess. That is why I never attend any of those P car meets / get togethers. I dick spoils the whole barrel. LOL

POST 19Original post

I wave or flash and get about a 50% response rate (regardless of model).

POST 20Original post

Quotes source post: 5743256

I'm not sure what's worst, appearantly I have a tree that produces berrys that are delectable to deer. They hardly move when I charge up the driveway at wot, while blinking lights. They move over enough to get out of the way then watch me back into garage and wait for the garage door to close before resuming.

POST 21Original post

Here in California in West Hollywood and in San Francisco there tends to be a lot of air kisses sent when passing another P car owner.

POST 22Original post

Quotes source post: 5743265

Never heard of the Bounce approach - but just kidding on the mice. The running joke is that my '04 C4S only has 3,000 miles on the odo - so it spends lots of time looking at the front end of my garage!

POST 23Original post

I flash at 911s but sometimes I make the mistake of flashing at Boxsters and then realize they don't know the handshake. I usually get a return greeting unless the other guy has a forefinger up his nostrils. Older p-cars also get the greeting.

POST 24Original post

Quotes source post: 5743877

Are there any women on this board that "flash" at other 911's..

POST 26Original post

This is timely. Today was out in the country and got waves from an E-type Jag, an F512M (with a wild kit, really something special), and a 997 cab. I had the night manager at a NJ Wendy's drive thru come out for an impromptu cameraphone photo shoot the other night which was so funny it hurts just thinking about it. Got some free fries which my brother promptly inhaled (after saying "at least this car's good for something"). And it is useful, as the doorman at my sister's place found out when he helped me load 10 banker's boxes into the trunk and parcel shelf the night before that. I think the funniest crowd was the 30 employees and assorted mall rats who assembled around my car while the bluetooth kit was being installed at the palisades mall circuit city. When I came back and saw them all around it, I thought something horrible had happened. Nope, just some good old fashioned slack jawed yokeling. Which is refreshing, considering how dime a dozen our cars are in my neck of the woods! I routinely get love from the Caymanators, never from Boxsters, always from air cooled, often from 996 & most of the more "sporty" 997s. I find I can almost always rely on a Cayenne driver to let me ahead of him in bumper to bumper traffic. Car guys, e.g. F-car, Lambo, Turbo & such, always return gestures. Many of you will not believe this, but I swear to you I picked up a wonderful woman driving a 355 spider (manual) in dead stop traffic on the 405 on the way to LAX in this thing last winter. Didn't talk much about cars. However, when I had a dealer Boxster a couple of months ago, my friendly waves and furtive flashes were greeted with complete and total ignorance by other P-car drivers. And it was fire engine red! It's interesting how these cars draw reactions from other drivers in traffic. Unlike the anonymity of an E55, you can definitely see how everyone is aware of you, makes me feel like a shark amongst guppies. Japanese car kids, young meatheads, and anyone in a "murdered out" truck or magnum or chrysler 300 or broken *** minivan, I find they may try to race me. I often find out after they've finished and I'm still sitting at the stoplight. These are the same guys who cut me off on the highway and then slow down, which I will never understand. But many, many of these people show deference, assuming that I will go fast or have a radar detector or something, and assemble behind me in line or pace me in traffic. I had a girl remark the other night that she'd "never seen anyone lead traffic from the right lane before", meaning everyone was caravaned behind me across the other three lanes on the highway even though I had the cruise on pegged to speed limit + 3 (indicated). I make it point not to mess with Corvettes anymore after driving a new new one a few weeks ago. Wave at the nice man, he's got a hammer in there, and you're kidding yourself if you think you'll catch him in the twisties.

POST 27Original post

Quotes source post: 5744016

I drove a viper down a mountain full of windmills in Pleasanton(sp?)/Disco Bay several times while visiting my brother, and it does take some getting used to especially back in 2000 when 450hp wasn't common.

POST 28Original post

I wave or flash all but the Peppers and Boxters and usually get a response back or they beat me to the punch. I thought I got flashed by a Boxter one day but it was a 996 cab. I felt bad because I didn't respond in time. As of late, the 997's, 993's and Crocs are quick to the punch. There's a black Croc that I see about once a week and we always flash at the same time. Kinda funny. If I see a 928, we all know each other so it's a phone call asking "where are ya going?"

POST 29Original post

I don't say the cars can't do it. My heavy 320 hp C4 can't beat a Viper nor a Z06. But fortunately it's rare to find a driver who doesn't fear the fast curves. It's what I love, I have few interest in top speed and top acceleration. Last time we played a guy driving a red 'vet and me. It was great, the guy was smart and I tried to be. I love when people don't take it seriously. Hans' post about the courtesy Boxster is a good explanation of it: you're judge because of what you ride and this is quiet ridiculous. You can have a serious time battling with a good drive in a Toyota Supra or even an Infiniti G37S (I had this surprise). After a good time these guys usually slow down and waive, they don't leave with the finger up like I see too often with pickup truck drivers.

POST 30Original post

Here are my observations: 1 Waves get more responses, high beams less so. 2 The less hair the driver has, the more likely a response. 3 Women almost never respond (see #2) 4 Men over 40 are more likely to respond (see #2) 5 The older the 911 model, the more likely a response 6 Cayenne drivers never respond (see #3) 7 You have to wave at all Boxters because by the time you figure out it's not a 911, it's already past you 8 In poor light I will sometimes wave at Mitsubishi Eclipses 9 If you see a guy in a silver Toyota mini-van wave at you, I'm having a senior moment and forgotten which car I am driving

POST 31Original post

Quotes source post: 5744160

I second that emotion.. lol!

POST 32Original post

I'm having a senior moment and forgotten which car I am driving That's me, ha. Actually I'll try to wave or acknowledge any car I see that's cool, but especially Porsches or aircooled VWs.

POST 33Original post

I wave to other 996 guys, and 9/10 times I getta wave back, same with pre-996s. 997s on the other hand...I can't tell you how many look away, or act busy, like they don't even see you. I had a guy pull up to me at a stop sign in a 997 cab tho, and asked if my car (C2 aero) was a GT2....I tried so hard not to laugh.

POST 34Original post

Wave in nice weather, flash the lights in the off season. The wave works most of the time . . .

POST 35Original post

I live near Columbus, Ohio. Pretty much all P-Car owners waive around here with the exception of boxsters, caymans and cayennes.

POST 36Original post

Quotes source post: 5744742

Why? Cause those three are mainly driven by women and women don't wave at each other?

POST 37Original post

Unfortunately, this long held tradition began to fade with the 996. I think it was mostly because so many of these later cars (Boxsters, 996s and 997s) are out there. Good luck getting someone in a Cayenne to respond!

POST 38Original post

I waved at a really sharp 67 912 today... the owner looked confused... go figure

POST 39Original post

We complain about Cayenne but on the other hand... I'm going to play devil (do you say that in English ?) but the cayenne is everything I can hate in a car : heavy, tall, long, large, useless, a waste of space and energy for owner's ego. So how do you want to wave at someone who spends money in such a piece of chxxxt while he/she could be enjoying a convertible or GT3 ?!

POST 40Original post

My waves get about 1/20 response. Really really sad. Most of the time, I'm looking over, smiling and waving, and the driver has two hands at the top of the steering wheel, staring straight, and not noticing anything else on the road. Sigh...

POST 41Original post

In Europe (where I grew up) to flash head lights means "Police with radar trap ahead", so I would never flash lights just to say hi. I usually do not initiate the wave, but always wave back.

POST 42Original post

Quotes source post: 5745413

It was the same in the US but now days everyone is out for themselves.

POST 43Original post

I get a 50/50 response when I wave in the 996. I get a really odd stare if I wave and I realize I'm in my Grand Cherokee. Then I think to myself, I am an idiot. LOL

POST 44Original post

Quotes source post: 5745596

same here when i forget i'm driving the minivan. :P

POST 45Original post

Quotes source post: 5742132

Back in the day, virtually all 911 drivers saluted their brethren. Now, with the much higher number of Porsches on the road - coupled with the general decline in courtesy & manners in American society - not so much. In fact, when I do get a wave now, it takes me off guard (and I hurriedly wave back so the other guy does not feel dissed).

POST 46 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 5745811

Yes the waves from the Suburban get about 100% no reply as the driver (me) remembers... STUPID CHEVY! I am thinking that as winter comes more drivers will wave as the "fair weather" drivers are replaced by die hards! (sorry about the fair weather comment) unless I keep driving that damn Chevy! Here in Seattle the daytime highs have been in the low 60's for what seems like a month with plenty of RAIN RAIN RAIN!! I drove today and will just deal with the mess later, I cant stand to wait for the sun to come back (9 more months?) E

I'm really bad at waving at the Toyota MR2's - from a distance, they look like a 911. For the record, I've never had one wave back Cayennes never wave either, in my experience. Boxsters usually do, unless it's a woman driving - I guess that's a global thing - seems like everyone here has had the same results.

I will have to start paying more attention when in my 996 but in my VW or Audi I always get other VW and Audi owners to wave back or wave first.

POST 50Original post

Read this thread this morning. About an hour ago, just saw a Cayman in the opposite direction at a light and waved - he waved back. Don't see too many 911's where I live. I've gotten the lights/wave and given them back when I can.

I'm in SF, Calif and I used to get the wave all the time in my boxster....but never before that in my '80 911SC, and not now in my '02 C2. it is kinda weird

I don't think some of the newer car owner realize YOUR in a Porsche too. It may be older or a different model. I REALLY think you have to be a P-car person to notice other drivers...some just aren't and never will be. Some just own the car because its a PORSCHE.

POST 55Original post

I waved at 2 997's today, at slow speed, one odd look and one that just kept his head straight, I don't think his eyeballs moved. Must have been a new car and was worried about traffic.

POST 56Original post

I dunno - I started riding a motorcycle last year after 20 years without. That was my "pre-pcar" amusement. I couldn't get over the waves - it tickled me, and still does. I ride a euro-bike (BMW) and it's funny how the Harley guys can be too cool to wave at you, or they put the hands down low and point - what's that all about??? I stick my hand up high and wave like the friggin' queen of England just to throw 'em. Anyhow - it's now in my nature to wave, and of course, I'm a car guy, so I notice everything on the road coming or going. In the past two or three months of ownership, I wave whenever I can - preferably with window down already - but sometimes I jam my hand against the window - that's just sad... In my experience on the bike, I get probably 85% returns (50% for HD riders), and it's rare I don't initiate. In the 911, I probably get well over 50% and I'm simply committed to keeping a lost tradition alive... and you know what??? Who cares if you don't get a return - they could be busy, pre-occupied on a cell phone (geeez that irks me), or too into themselves... either way, they'll probably think about it next time someone flashes or waves - so I'm not gonna stop. And the best of all circumstances (for the "available" drivers) is that they'll pick up a hot woman in a Ferrari like one of the prior posters did... Who cares about rejection - we're driving one of the coolest cars on the planet.

This morning on the 17th between Los Gatos and San Jose I passed two 997 S. One silver with two guys aboard. They saw me, I saw the driver pointing the 4S in the back mirror (something like "look, a turbo behind us" - people always think it's a turbo). I'm on their right and wave them... no anwser. The other 997S, dark grey is just in front. A woman. I could verify the theory exposed by several guys above : women don't reply. She just ignored me. They were driving like turttles: the woman slaloming between lanes, but at 65. The guys at 65 on the left lanes. Well I kicked the 4th and took next exit with my favourite curve and let these idiots behind. The spirit has been lost, men Too many young and rich guys buy a Porsche because it's beautiful and looks sporty. They should buy a Jag instead of a sport car.

POST 59Original post

I do the traditional 2 quick flashes to everyone from 914 up, with the exception of cayennes. I get about a 50-65% response. Response seems mostly the same in the Boxster except for some more frequent cold shoulders as expressed from some owners above (both 996/997). Come on guys, where's the love?

POST 60Original post

I'm old school. I drove my father's 1968 912 while I was in high school during the late 60s and early 70s. All porsches flashed or wave at each other. Now days when I flash about half the time I get a wave. Never a flash. Too bad.

POST 61Original post

First of all, I have to say that I agree with eDoug. I wave at every Porsche without exception. It's actually gotten me in trouble with the wife..."who was she?!?" she asked sternly. "It was another Porsche, honey." My best/worst wave story happened when I first bought the car. I was having it inspected per Maryland state law. The mechanic was coming back from the test drive and I watched him waiting to make a left into the garage parking lot where I stood. Driving the other direction is the smokin' hottest blonde I've ever seen behind the wheel of a 997S. She slows down and gives the mechanic the biggest wave and smile and yells out "sweet cab" and he just looks blankly at her and says nothing so she drives off, seemingly in a huff. It was the most painful Porsche moment I've ever had.

Sadly I find this to be true here as well. I have 3 different vintages of Porsches, though I only drive the 996 regularly. When I'm in 80 911, just about all air cooled porsches I pass wave or blink. In 996 that seldom happens wth any other Pcars, especially Boxsters. In 968, the 4 cylinder guys not only wave, but will rolll down their window at stop lights for a quick hello some times

POST 63Original post

I have been driving a Porsche for 35 years and the habits of drivers have changed. When I bought my first 911, a 67' in 1973, there weren't that many Porsches out there, 356's and 911's. almost everyone flashed their lights when they saw another Porsche. It was quite rare that Porsches did not flash. This was really the way I found it until the 80's. in 1982 I bought a 928, and with the pop-up lights flashing was not really possible, also true for 914's and 924's-944's. So it become less and less common. Remember how many of the 914's and 924-944's were sold. I drove 928's until 2000 when I bought a 996. Tried to flash at other Porsches , but it is rare now that you get a response. Maybe it was the long series of "pop-up headlight" that started the change of habits, but who really knows.

WoW interesting thought. Also the new cars have lights ON all the time, so flashing is a bit harder to see if I am not mistaken. POST 72Original post

This was a big issue back when I used to drive BMWs as well. The 2002 guys were the purists and felt there was a big rift with all the new BMW fans. I specifically recall a guy in Roundel saying he refused to acknowledge newer BMW drivers until he felt they showed him the proper respect. I always wondered what they had to do to have gotten his respect! The thing I had to stop doing was waving at Porsche's when I was in my new A4...talk about feeling like a dumbass. I will say that I quit waving/flashing at 996 drivers when I was in my '88 since they almost never responded. Every once in a while I'd get totally shocked by someone in a 996 who waved or flashed and I'd quickly try to respond.

POST 73 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

UPDATE: OK this is nuts, I have waved at at least 30 cars since my last post. I have NOT waved like a 6 year old waves to the fireman, I have not waved like some over zellous jack ***... just a nice little tip of the hand or even a couple fingers. Many of these happened right along side other 996's, 997's, 993's, 986's and a few older 911's. At least 5 of them were AFTER we had made eye contact while driving next to each other for a few seconds in open road conditions and in traffic. Once was even a nice looking elderly couple in a newer Targa 997 where we were driving side by side, I looked, smiled and gave a very small wave and a smile... she turned away after looking me straight in the eye??? WASHINGTON DRIVERS ARE STUCK UP!!!! - NOT ONCE did I get a return (until yesterday when a guy in a C4 Cab returned the wave) Infact, on several occations when I waved the people looked and then just looked away and never again looked back... One guy was obviously WAY TOOO COOOL (p*ss off) Man, I have read that this area is "COLD" but I mean to tell you, I would smile and return a wave to ANYONE that initiated a wave, with or without the P-Car "connection" My 0.02 - I dont even care about the type of person that would not even return a friendly HELLO from another human being... as far as I am concerned, I will start waving to PRIUS driver before I initiate another P-Car wave... And that's the end of that!! Peace All -

+1 "Older" p-cars are usually owned by enthusiasts, thus the wave. "Newer" p-cars seem to be a mix, enthusiasts=wave , non-enthusiast=no wave . Some of us own Porsche's because we love the vehicle and everything it stands for. When someone finds out how much I paid or how much they cost, I usually get the ; "You could have gotten a vette, gt500, etc." My response, "This was the car I wanted, not those. I've always wanted a Porsche." Some buy p-cars because they are shiny and they heard they are fast. I always wave at p-cars if I see them, no matter what kind it is. Bout 50/50 waves.

POST 75Original post

This is a good discussion. In spanish soloporsche.com forum we had a great thread about this. Not every Porsche owner has the same passion, and there are lots of them who only wanted a nice sport car with a high quality sport look. Besides, Cayenne owners are not the best to feel Porsche passion. This is my own way to understand this philosophy THE PHILOSOPHY Porsche represents far more than just an unmistakable trade name. It’s maximun exponent is the 911. Porsche is fascination. The 911 not only promises a world of experience. The myth becomes reality. Only then can you feel the power that is unique to Porsche – both active and attractive. The brand thus embodies the epitome of sporty driving and thinking. That is a real philosophy for us, the 911 lovers, pure cPorsche, pure 911. When you've have the chance to see a nine-eleven for the first time, it probably changes your way of thinking about cars. The 911 is not a simply sport car, it's the myth 911. The longing to possess a 911 could become to transform into an obsession, or a 'beautiful' chronic disease... When you are seated at the commands of a 911 and you'd switch the engine on, you'll know that there is something different. It's characteristic flat-six engine sound is telling to us that we are in a real sport car. The '911 personality', is caused by the rear engine configuration. If you want to extract the most from the car, just driving it wouldn't be enough, you'll have to ride it as a pilot. The 911-concept has been enchanting all the Porsche 911 lovers far more than 40 years, and it's really alive more than never been thought before. Its uncomparable silhouette is another one of the 911 concept's elements. There are no similitudes to any other sporty car. 911 owners don't enjoy just driving it. They have fun contemplating the car after parked indeed. In fact we are talking about a mental sickness... a chronic desease. Imagine a sunny Sunday morning, an unfrequented road mountain, both the 911 and you... It's harmony, pleasure, symbiosis, everytime closer to eden, the nirvana of senses. The fascinating sense enkindled by the myth is over the good and evil, and even the love to sport cars. It's probably something that nobody could define and the 911 drivers reach to feel when the car is being driven. Am I crazy about the nine eleven? May be, ... But God bless Ferry Porsche. By Juankimalo Do you thinkt that every owner has the same point of view? I don't think so... There aren't so many crazy guys as me __________________

+1 for this Awesome - Thatt is EXACTLY how I feel, I have spent my entire adult life from age 13 dreaming only of the 911. YEA - Crazy........ I wave to all who are aflicted, we know who you are!

funny I wanted one since 13 too and got one this year after thinking I'd never get one. I hate the fact it looks like a boxster from the front, but I couldnt afford a later one, apart from that, I need to get out in a couple of times a week to get my fix. In the UK they never seem to wave. In all my years I've never seen a porsche going fast, they are either doing a steady 85 on the motorway or trundling along at 45 through towns. I've never seen one gun from the lights or overtake quickly or even accelerate. Mine though is driven differently, redlined out of roundabouts, overtakes at full chat with a lovely howl, joins at A road flat out through the gears. I remember in 1985 when I had a 1300 vauxhaul being overtaken off a roundabout by a sunbeam lotus, it stuck in my mind as it left me for dead, a blare from the exhaust as it went past, what a nice change to actually see it being driven as its meant to,. I saw a new lambo this morning, sounded fantastic, but it was driving around an ikea car park and hit all of 50 as it went off up the road, again it this crowded isle its hard to get anywhere fast. It seems the only cars that get driven quickly are the dreaded Tdi Vw's and Audi that populate the roads here, they are def foot to the floor all the time, its rather nice to follow them off a roundabout as they go off revelling in their 250 Ibft of torque to see them pull over into the inside lane accelerating and expecting to leave all others in their wake, only to have my silver arrow howl past them

I hate it when people don't wave too, but you have to realize some people just don't see you. I had a guy in a Corvette give me a thumbs up and I missed it. The kids told me after he passed. I was pissed that I didn't see it. That guy probably thought I was a real dick because I was driving a Porsche and didn't respond, but in reality I was really disappointed that I missed it especially coming from someone driving a different marque. Had the top down today and another guy in a 'vette cab yelled over, "nice car" and I was sure to reciprocate. I always wave, but a lot of times people don't see and some see, but don't have a clue. All that ensures the ones that do wave are true enthusiasts.

Gads its hard enough shifting gears holding the beer. Now you want a wave back? Sheeze There are many other ways people signal back. In Nebraska it's one finger lifted off the steering wheel normally. Hawaii is typically a head nod upwards. California and regions infiltrated by the mass migration its the middle finger I thought. So try the middle finger. I'm sure you will get that wave back in a timely manner. I've seen guys on sportbike forums complain about some people not waving. It's like they need a wave back or their belief in mankind is lost. I personally prefer a fist on the top of an oncoming bikers helmet to warn of police ahead for me. I'm sure some are fearful for their lives trying to wave back on a bike. After around......errr faster the wind tends to catch body parts and corkscrew a guy off his bike. Me I just streamline my hand and arm. When you see a sportbike guy looking like he is pointing at the ground to another its a wave of sorts saying keep the wheels on the road. Kind of help keep a guy healthy. But now with your bright red car you get waved at? You might also get pulled over more

He said it was in great shape. When I got home my son litterally ran out of the house and said "can we go for a drive somewhere?" DUH - Yea! below is a map of a road that is as close to the road to Hanna as we have around here... you dont want to speed, its littered with bikes and slow cars... but the map doesnt show how many hairpins are on it either..... I have to say, I know the shocks are worn, the suspension is stock and its an old car... but it's a Porsche and every bit as fun as the 996 was on this road, maybe even a bit more fun? (I know.......) anyhow.... as we finished out the "loop" one last bike.... and its the tech from my indy shop that just drove it (too funny) - we talked for 30 seconds and off I go. You should have said: If you work really, really hard, then maybe one day you'll be able to afford to upgrade to a 911!

POST 113Original post

Jumping in really late in this thread but thought I would add my experience. I got my first Porsche, a 67' 911 coupe in 1973. At that time there really weren't that many Porsche's around and invariably we all flashed are lights twice when we saw another Porsche. It was rare when another Porsche did not flash back. Went through two more 911 up until 1982, and it was pretty much the same thing, seemed like all owners flashed most of the time. However, this did excluded the 914's and the 924/944/928 drivers as they had pop-up headlights. In 1982 I got my first 928, a 79' model. With the pop-ups I basically stopped the flashing. In 1985 I upgraded to an 82' 928S, still no flashing. Finally in 2000 when back to the 911's, actually a 996, but only flash on occasion, just out of the habit I guess. I think maybe the advent of the pop-up headlight models lessened the number of owners flashing. Now all models are non-pop-up, but it just hasn't come back. There are many Porsche's out there now, and most owners do not come from the era when it was a more exclusive car. Maybe we could start it up again.

POST 114Original post

I always wave (former biker) but rarely get the wave back. I'm going to have to try this flashing thing.

Only get to drive my targa on weekends around NoVa and DC and I seldom see anything other than the occasional Boxster. Funny enough, I see 911's regularly on my weekend rides on the road bike through the nicer roads of Montgomery County, Maryland. If any of you guys are out there, I'm one of those skinny guys with the shaved legs riding a road racing or time trial bike. P-drivers around here have always been polite and wiling to share the road - unlike pretty much every other weekend driver in the metro DC area, so thanks a lot, a lot of us appreciate it! Especially those of us whose friends and spouses have been hit by cars. I'll definitely make the effort to wave or flash when I see another P-car around here, I've given a quick nod before and sometimes I get a return. Saw a nice 997 at the light on Pennsylvania Ave while walking from metro to the office today, the woman driving was looking forward almost trance like... L

POST 119Original post

I started doing it last spring after I got my car. I suppose it was inspired by the thought that I didn't want to be associated as "another pr!ck with some disposable income to spend on a fancy car to try and impress others". I'm a nice guy who got the car for *me*, not anyone else (the chicks, the attention, the envy, etc). so I started waving at other P-car drivers in my quest to see how many were like-minded sports-car lovers. Turns out: not many. Like others have mentioned, I don't flash...unless i just passed a speed trap facing the other way. In which case - I flash a lot! I wave at all other P-cars - a subtle wave (hand raise from the steering wheel), and most of the time.... actually now that I think about it, I don't think I've gotten a single response. Ah well, I'll still do it. I'm with eDoug; who cares if I don't get a return? Maybe, eventually, other downtown drivers will get the idea and, when they see me again, maybe they'll loosen up a bit and wave back next time. *shrugs*

POST 120 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My experience has been more like yours. I have found after 2 years of waving, I do get some back. About a month ago in the 996 on the freeway, I pulled along side another black 99' very plain, stock - he kind of smiled, whatever, then a Boxster got on and we were 3 wide - the Boxster was really nicely modded and there was a young boy in the passenger seat who was obviouly stoked to see 3 Porsches together. The driver had a huge smile and we waved - I really think he was not trying to be cool, he just loved the Porsche cars - the other guy just had the "I'm cool" chip on the shoulder err something. I loved the kids smile! We exited one by one in about 3 miles time and as I pulled into work, I smiled

I guess this whole thing depends in part on where you are in the country. In Indiana, people are generally pretty friendly. Also, here in Fort Wayne, I've seen maybe 10 991s in the 11 years that I've lived here. They just aren't that common. Other drivers are, for the most part, very willing to wave or flash the lights. It will be interesting to see how this compares to the Denver area when we are out there in a few months...

Tried it today with a guy a Cayman... Got the finger in response... (he looked like a real metrosexual) Tried it again later to a guy in a silver C4S and got a thumbs up... He had a Porsche hat on.

Are you joking? The finger because you waved at someone? I was stuck at a light yesterday out of a parking lot. My direction has a right turn only lane, and a straight/left turn lane. The other direction has left/right only. The only person in front of me is making a left, as is all of the oncoming traffic, but I'm going straight. I watch and creep up as 1, 2, 3 cars all turn left in front of me as I'm trying to go straight through the intersection on the green light. Some bi-atch in a Cayenne realizes that I have pushed the turning lane so far back she can't make it. She gave me the "hurry up, I need to buy a purse" hand gesture, and I gave her a gesture back.

I can't believe that someone would give another person the finger because of waving to him. What a Jerk, let alone, poor representation of Porsche ownership!

POST 127Original post

Incredible.................. FWIW, I'm still wavin'

Me too... but now it's part game/part survey... so far, wave backs are ahead... but I also count nods and smiles... Rudy

POST 129Original post

I still wave (or nod my head to acknowledge) any car I think is cool. Funny, sometimes I'll wave at a nice modded GTI and you can tell the dude is like "whoa some guy in a Porsche digs my V-dub!" We've got a lot of handmade or modified rods in my area, some Lambos around, they all generally all nod or wave back. I think car guys just sense another car guy.

yup, same here, catch someone checking out my ride I acknowledge it some how, raise a finger, nod my head kind of thing.

POST 131Original post

My guess is that he bought the car for name on it an not the pride in owning a performance vehicle and immersing himself in the culture of P-car ownership.

Hey was your wife on HWY 70 by the Indianapolis airport last night?

POST 133Original post

copied from another one of my posts It all came back to me today, when an 80's MY 911 black with a whale tail, pulled out in front of my 996. He had the big 80's tear drop mirrored sun glasses, He was looking in the mirror at his hair and combing it, he was finger brushing his teeth in the rear view. I stay behind him for a few lights trying to catch a wave... No go.... So I pulled up beside him looked over and gave him a wave. He looked at me like I was a disease and wouldnt wave. So he pulls out and hits it.... So I hit it also, flew by him and gave him the bird. We were then on the hiway. So I continued to show him who was in the Porsche and who was in the VW.

POST 135Original post

How dare them not wave back What I don't like is how it seems nobody warns anybody about cops. It used to be an east cost thing to turn the lights on for a while after passing a speed trap. That and flashing the lights would give persons approaching from the other direction a warning. Then jerks installed lights that come on when the engine starts and others think its safer during the day to have the lights on, sheeeeze. Had a solobiker policeman wave his laser on my sportbike yesterday Then mysteriously an SS Camaro down the road mixed into traffic with me. Hmmm the pursuit guys drive turbo camaro's. They sure are friendly here. Can't wait till the pink accented 996 driver arrives.

POST 136Original post

Pulled out on to the highway today at lunch and a Cayman was behind me in another lane. He made it a point to catch up to me and as I slowed for him to come up beside I looked over with a smile and about to wave to find the stern faced well dressed young driver with his hands firmly planted at 9 & 3 and not so much as a glance my way. I think the little Cayman guy had something to prove.

POST 137Original post

I flashed my lights (afternoon hours) at a 944 the other day, received a wave, and waved back. I find most 944'ers show the love

POST 138 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

this is funny - there is this old man in a 99' C2 black stock 996 that I used to drive along side once in a while going to work. Never smiled, never waved, nothing..... the other day I came up on him pretty quickly in the red car and NO **** he was waving IN THE REAR VIEW MIRROR at me !! I pull along side and he has a huge smile and is looking right at me waving.... I laughed because it was so differant from the 996 even though our cars were almost the same. dont know what to make of that

POST 139Original post

Back in the day ('80s) we used to flash our high beams, as P cars were one of the few that had a turn signal stalk that you could pull toward you for a day time flash. Over the last few years, when I either flash or wave to another P car driver all I get is a dirty look, like "I don't know you!" So now, I usually just flip them off, then chuckle when they give me a dirty look. JK

Might be color blind and can't see or apprreciate a black car.

could be that huge neon arrow on the roof pointing at the red one I guess

POST 144Original post

Seems most common amongst air-cooled to air-cooled owners - FWTW.

POST 145Original post

Last evening, at a light with a circa 1998 boxster on lane 1 of a 3 lane road. Light changes, he cuts across me into my lane 2 suddenly - so then I moved over to lane 3 and he cuts right in front of my car AGAIN, brakes and stops to wait to take a parking spot. Both had our cabrio down, so I pulled up next to him and told him: "You are the reason why people think Porsche drivers are ******". While he tried to muster up a response, a mini pulled into the spot and he lost his spot anyway. I drove away. Made up by the great experience I had in NYC this weekend - every P car I waved at waved back

POST 147Original post

I've found it to be pretty mixed up here in Colorado. A guy in Boxster waved yesterday (I returned the wave), and I've had a few air-cooled 911 drivers wave. I haven't had much of a response from other 996 drivers or from 997 drivers. I stopped trying with Cayennes. Unlike Indiana, Cayennes are everywhere here. There's one at almost every stop light.

POST 148 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

hey road... might give decaf a try

POST 149Original post

I think geography has a good deal to do with it. In DC/MD/VA, P-cars are so common that I typically wave only if the car catches my eye as a very nice example or if the other guy waves first. Otherwise, I'd be better off just duct tapping my left arm to the roof and leaving it there instead of reaching out the window and flicking my wrist every 500 feet. The "two fingers off the steering wheel approach" has been adopted as a middle ground, of sorts.

Same here in Boston... BUT I never wave at Cayenne's and they never wave back, but they're as common as BMW's here...

POST 151Original post

does anyone agree that these posts are gay? like really, a debate as to why people do or do not wave, flash lights, show a peace sign, give a thumbs up or any other show of recognition/awareness that HORAAAY we both drive a Porsche!!! lets pull over and rub our bums together...........Gees, this is the reason that people think Porsche drivers are dicks, because they pine over whether they wave or not and say stuff like, "i only wave to air-cooled....." blah, blah, blah. It's all gay. who's gives a hoot? really? Because I drive the same car as you makes us connected? really? What's worse is someone will respond and call me a "hater" and not admit that really I'm right. And to that person I say, "game, set, match"

POST 152Original post

In the early 70s when I drove a 356 about, there seemed to be a lot more Porsches on the road as I was blinking at other Porsches all the time. Now, not so much. I seldom see another Porsche. But I agree with chopperzz, who cares?

POST 155Original post

I don't think that acknowledging a common interest with another enthusiast is gay at all. It's the little things that make owning and driving a Porsche special. If everyone drove one, then it wouldn't matter. Harley Davidson drivers wave to each other too, and I doubt that they feel that it's gay.

POST 156 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I know, next time I see a big burley Harley guy wave at another biker, I'll ask him (keep in mind I weigh 155lbs, so I can hold my own againt those big gays, err I meant guys)
