It is a fact that Porsche installed the X74 on the 3.4L cars made before 01.

The car sits low, but it is not impossible I just need to use common sense when entering and exiting driveways.

I think a lot of it has to do with the cheap shocks that they use from Boge.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I finnally broke down and ordered a kit from Carnewal.
I just acquired my '02 Carrera Coupe in December. I needed to replace my Honda S2000 because my wife and I had a baby and I needed a backseat.
My first feelings about the Porsche was that it was really fast, but the handling was soft and sloppy. I longed for the slot car like handling of my S2000. I started researching suspension for the 996, of which there are many, and settled on the x74. This is why. I have a third party extended warranty that calls for no aftermarket suspensions. So to protect this, I was limiting myself to Porsche kits. I was discouraged by reports that the ROW M030 kit had variaitons in its' final ride height by +/- 10mm and that some people didn't think it was enough. The more I read about the x74 it sounded great.
All it took to seal the deal was the sale at Carnewal on the x74 kit.
I decided to install it myself as I enjoy getting to know my car up close and personal and to save a few bucks too. 9+ hours later of working on my own it was done.
The car now handles great. It is very much like my old S2000. Not only is the handling head and shoulders better, but the ride quality is MUCH better too. I really feel that Porsche cheaped out on the stock suspension for the Carrera. The stock ride was both floaty AND harsh. I think a lot of it has to do with the cheap shocks that they use from Boge. The x74 is based on Bilstein shocks, and give a much more refined ride. While the ride is firmer, it is less harsh than the stock ride. I actually have fewer vibrations/rattles in the cab now with the x74 installed.
Needless to say I am very happy. The ride and handling are now what I expected from a Porsche. The car sits low, but it is not impossible I just need to use common sense when entering and exiting driveways.
This suspension really helps build confidence in the car. it is more predictable and feels more connected and lightweight. The car has been transformed. I highly recommend it.
Oh and I am a daily driver.
Andy
Please post some pics. I, too, am thinking about the X74 for my '03 C2.
Did the kit come with the "taillight brackets/supports?" I am still wondering what that actually consists of and would like some pics of them.
Thanks.
Congrats and thanks for the update! So did you install the engine mounts that come with the kit too? Were the engine mounts DIY too (say without a lift)?
Thanks,
Ahsai
Pics will come after I get a chance to wash the car this weekend.
The x74 kit consists of:
Front and rear preassembled struts (springs, shocks, bumpstops, top plate)
Front and rear up rated swaybars (same as M030 kit) and rubber bushings
Rear chassis braces (2, one for each side by tail lights)
I cannot for the life of me figure out what difference the chassis braces can make, they are small, thin gauge aluminium plates that bolt sanwiched between the body and a plastic tail light mounting bracket. I put them on anyway. ~20min.
Having the struts pre-assembled in the kit makes the install MUCH faster and less complicated. (no spring compressor or airtools needed)
The x73 kit is for C4 C4S and Turbos and includes motor mounts.
No way you can use that (Ray's pic) as a substitute for a pic of your car!
We need pics!
Stated another way...
Oh, and did I mention we need pics???
< Hey Guys, how am I doin'? >
Tomb, yea, the exchange is a b!tch right now.
V-tach, the consensus is that you can put it on a '99, but Porsche does not recommend it based on the '99-'01 chassis is not as stiff as the '02-'04.
With that said, people but other aftermarket suspensions on the '99s that are MUCH stiffer than the x74 and are happy with it.
Looks really good. How much of a drop in the front and rear did you get? I'm assuming that this suspension is not adjustable. Is the front now slightly lower than the rear?
Again looks good, Enjoy!!
nice work.... looks wonderful... i think for the 99 models, go with the pss9 or the jic.... it's stiff enough and it will work wonders for the 99 model.......
RE: putting the X74 on '99, below is the response I received from carnewal when I asked the question. The guy must get asked all the time. I ended up with M030 which is currently in my basement waiting to be installed.

Hi,
The X74 can be installed on your '99 996 C4 without any problem and with great results.
It is a fact that Porsche installed the X74 on the 3.4L cars made before 01. So all the talk about the X74 not fitting or not working the -01 cars is totally incorrect as Porsche installed it their selves.
It was an option from the Exclusive Department only available to European cars and therefore unknown outside Europe until Porsche introduced the retrofit kit in 2002.
We have several customers with 99 and 00 cars that have the X74 since many years and like the setup very much.
Please note that there is a lot of misconception about the X74 in the US. Most people that make these comments for example on Rennlist never have seen a car with the X74, let alone drove one.
If you look at a H&R coilover or PSS-9 kit, you will also see that there is only one kit for both the 99-01 cars and the 02-04 cars.
The X74 is normally 1995 Euro and is on sale at 1595 Euro shipped.
Since we are now selling the last kits that we have in stock, I can offer you the kit at 1495 Euro shipping included.
As soon as our stock is gone, the price will be 1995 Euro again.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Regards,
Gert.

Onderwerp: X-74 kit for 1999 (USA) C4
Attn: Gert
Hi,
I'm reading conflicting reports on renlist concerning X-74 suspension kit for a USA 1999 C4.
Will the kit work on a 1999 and if yes, how much is it.
Thanks,
My car (04 C4S w/X-73) started at 26 3/4" front, 26 1/2" rear - AFTER installation 25 5/8" front, 25 1/2" rear.
I also did the install myself and found some interesting short cuts or tips for the C4 cars, here are some pix that I think will work for the C2 cars also......BTY - I had help!!
I will be happy to explain any of the photos here.
eric
I'm in northern California. I'm trying to schedule my first track event and I am not sure it I will head to Buttonwillow (central Cali) or Thunderhill (Northern Cali). We'll have to see what works into the schedule.
gota911, thanks for the compliments.
Now that I have driven the car with the x74 on it for over a month I can really say that I love it. Great handling and still a great ride!
Andy
Andy, I share the same thoughts. I took my car to Lake Havasu AZ so I got a good chance to experience it in many different settings. I am very happy with the ride and the performance. As most everyone else says, this is what the car SHOULD have had from the factory. After all, it is a P O R S C H E !!
.... and not a toyota.
If anyone is interested, I have a x74 kit available, brand never out of the box, with an engine protection plate for a C4. I'm asking $2000. PM me if you're interested. Mike
